I have requested a third floor room in the Tokelau Bldg. of the Poly for our Dec. trip. After reading all the posts, I am wondering if i shouldn't change this request to ground floor. With 3 kids it might be more convenient to just walk out the door rather than down three flights and the kids might enjoy the extra freedom of being able to go out onto a patio. What would you do?

I would say definately ground floor. We were in that building, and just had to walk right outside for the pool and the walkway into the main building to catch the monorail or get coffee. We were also right off the sidewalk to the beach and it was so nice just to walk out and see the fireworks from there, plus the electrical pageant, or whatever it is called, lol.

One of my kids greatest memories is the ducks and birds that were always right outside the sliders. They loved feeding them cereal the first day. Every day thereafter, there were some ducks that literally came knocking on the sliding glass doors every morning, looking for food. My kids absolutely loved this and still talk about that. I know some people hate the birds and ducks there, but not us, we loved it, and we live in the woods, so seeing ducks and birds is an everyday occurance here, but they don't knock on our door at home, lol.

Don't forget though, that you can't lock your room from the slider. The kids and I would always walk out thru the slider, and my husband would have to use the door, lock it and meet us on the sidewalk, lol.

I've got 3 children also, and I'm requesting a ground floor room in Tokelau!

We'll be there Dec 7-14. Maybe we'll see each other!

We had 3rd floor in Tokelau last year. We were at the end near the arcade(about 3 rooms from the stairs) overlooking the quiet pool. It was very quiet especially at DSs nap time. Never heard anybody in the hall or any other noises that would keep you awake.

I'm going to be the odd one and say I'm requesting the top floor when we go in October. I have an active 3 y/o and do not want her to be able to escape. I have horrible images in my mind of her waking early and opening the patio door and running away and me chasing her in my Minnie nightgown! I figure if I keep her on the top floor the height might prevent her from escaping!

but as my 3 yo fell through a 6-inch spacing in a railing as a young toddler, I get agida at thought of him behind a railing!

Two quick questions: I am going also in Dec. and have a two yr. old, is he going to be able to slip through the rails on the third floor? Second, do they have elevators up to the third floor or am I going to have to walk him up three flights of stairs. Thanks

Mary 007 -

Yes, your 2 year old will be able to squeeze through the railing. Our 2 year old could fit. Why they made it so unsafe, I have no idea? What we did is took the 2 bedrails housekeeping brought us for the bed and stacked them on top of each other when we had the sliding door open. This was on the 2nd floor. On the 3rd floor, I'd bring the child netting you can buy at Babies r Us.

Yes, they have elevators. On 2 of the 5 mornings we were there they weren't working :(. Not a lot of fun with a stroller.

Have a great trip.

Thanks for the info. I am going with a family group and we have 3 two yr olds going. I am going to have to relay this info. We were thinking of staying in Aotearoa. Is this a good spot?

Its never a good idea to leave a 2 year old alone on a balcony or patio for that matter. I think your child would have to be smaller than average to squeeze through the railing, but they could climb up on the chairs or table and fall over the railing. From the patio they could wander onto the grass which can have fire ants (even though they do spray for them).

In addition to the typical lock in the handle, the sliders have a j-shaped lock that is too high for a toddler to reach and can be tricky to open even for an adult.

In answer to the OP's question, I would vote for first floor since it makes wheeling a stroller in and out of the building that much more convenient.
