It is an additional cake at the wedding. To my knowledge, this cake represents something that is the groom's favorite. I have to see if my H2B wants one or not. Since we are going to have a Disney Cake for 50 people with only 35 or so attending, I don't think we need another cake.
The groom's cake is smaller and less elaborate than the bride's. It is usually one layer of some kind of dark cake--fruitcake(gag!), carrot cake, red velvet cake(think "Steel Magnolias"), or devil's food cake. My own DH loves red velvet cake and he had a small grooms cake iced with frosting grapes and leaves. It was quite pretty with the white wedding cake and the red velvet cake on the same plate.
I think that grooms cakes are more of a tradition in the South than in other parts of the country. Ive seen lots of chocolate grooms cakes, which can be nice because it gives guests a choice about what type of cake they want. We opted not to have a grooms cake at our wedding since the Disney cake was so big and already had different flavored layers.
We also opted out of having a Groom's cake. The wedding cake cost plenty, and there was more then enough. If he wants it, go for it. I am sure they would both look nice next to each other.
In the words of my DH: "A cake that I have control of and you can't do anything about it!" Right after that proclomation he dissolved into laughtere and pronounced that we were having ice cream cake, which I full heartedly agreed with. lol

BUT we will be serving it at the Dinner rehearsal the night before. Instead of the traditional fruit type cake or dark colored cake he's doing a twinkie. Yes I said a TWINKIE. They are specially making a twinkie cake for my FDH. My FDH can't stop talking about it. Instead of telling people that we are getting married at WDW, he fast forwards the important stuff and rants and rave about his GIANT TWINKIE cake. He's giving me the FTW and he gets his giant twinkie cake. I'm on a diet right now and it's sounds REALLY good right now!!!
Just like it sounds, its a cake for the groom. The grooms cake was part of the southern wedding tradition but lately southern belles arent the only ones ordering these cakes for their beaus. This cake used to actually be called the wedding cake while the wedding cake of today was called the brides cake.
While the wedding cake or brides cake was eaten at the wedding reception, the groom's cake, which was usually a fruitcake, was taken home as a wedding favor (thinly sliced pieces in personalized bags or boxes) for the unmarried female guests to put under their pillows. Supposedly, the women would dream of their future husbands.
The bride orders the grooms cake at the same place where she orders her wedding cake. She usually keeps the design of the grooms cake a secret from the groom but makes sure to choose designs that represent the grooms personality. Some grooms refuse to let anyone in on the secret and they take great joy in ordering their grooms cake. Either way, the groom's cake really serves as a way for the groom to have his own special part of the reception or rehearsal dinner.
