Hey everyone, couple of questions.........

We are wanting to do a "welcome dinner" the night before the wedding, we are looking for a restaurant near downtown disney (preferrably not rainforest cafe) any suggestions......?

Secondly does anyone have pics of a groom's cake? We are hoping to have that for dessert after the "welcome dinner". I know I saw a link to Disney's cake designs with a section for groom's cakes, but I can not find it now.......any help or pics would be great! Thanks!

we had our welcome dinner at rainforest cafe & it was really nice, the food was good & we were on the water. instead of a grooms cake my hubby had tiramisu in a chocolate cup on the plate with our sliced wedding cake at our reception.

another option is fultons, portabello yacht club (italian), wolfgang puck upstairs or disney quest at dtd for a welcome/rehearsal dinner. i know they all have private rooms &/or do group dining.

Ive heard some very good reviews from both fultons & portabello yacht club, but there is also the option of Bongos Cuban Cafe & Captain Jack's Restaurant.

Where having a Texas grooms cake made of red velvet & baileys -yum can almost feel the sugar rush now!!. Still not sure if we will serve ours at the rehearsal dinner or as part of a dessert party.

Disney has excellent pastry chefs who can recreate anything at a price, for example 1 persons grooms cake I saw was of " herbie" which cost over $1000.

I would suggest to give GF bakery a call & ask for quotes

For a rehearsal dinner at DTD, I'd definitely go with Portobello Yacht Club. They do a nice job.

If you want to go offsite, the Dr. Phillips area is very nice and has excellent restaurants (to fit all budgets).

Groom's Cake. You aren't going to have one of those red velvet armadillos are you? :guilty:

I thought I saw somewhere that Portobello did not take reservations? Is that correct?

My groom's cake will be an apple pie. It's what he requested! :teeth:

My groom is a fishing nut. He used to skip school to fish. When he was 9, the police brought him home one night. He had crawled out his window and gone fishing. His mother told me that she hated checking his pockets before washing his pants because she'd find worms in there. So, I thought a fish cake would be great.
Something like this but smaller:

We had a very simple groom's cake, but we loved it! It was a total surprise for my DH and he loves chocolate! I'm not a chocolate fan and I got the wedding cake I wanted, so he was happy when he had the cake brought out to him!

Fairy Tale Bride:
I think your Mickey cake is super adorable! Do you remember how much it was?

I am wondering the same thing Fairy Tale Bride! Where did you order it from?

Thank you! It was pretty yummy! We called and ordered it straight from 'Ohana, where we had dinner that evening. It was $45. :mickeybar

I am not sure why most people don't think of this option...but the House of Blues has some excellent food and does private parties/functions also. It is in Downtown Disney and is really a neat little place to go. I am planning a welcome party there and they have quoted me some great menus w/ some great choices. My welcome party/rehearsal dinner will be for around 30 people, so I also have the option of just reserving the main dining area and they will sit us all in the same area (just not one big table), and that way it will be "less expensive". Who knows, there may even be a good band that night!

I just found out that INXS will be at the House of Blues on my wedding night...we are thinking of adding that to the end of our night!!! :cool1:

I know this may not be for everyone, but if you like or want something a little bit different...it is something to consider.

I am not sure why this location is never mentioned. Maybe there is something I don't know.. :confused3

I think that's a great idea! I love the HOB! They have great cornbread there! Yum! And I also really like it when I see someone choose something different than the usual destinations for their parties. :thumbsup2

bonnaroofairy-
I think the HOB is a great idea that never even occured to me. If you don't mind me asking, do you know about how much a rental fee is or a quote per person???

We are having our rehearsal dinner at Raglan Road in Downtown Disney. Not sure how much it is because my DF booked it all. I can find out if anyone is interested. I know we are just having dinner with the immediate family and wedding party. Then at 9:00 PM everyone else is invited for drinks. I have over 100 people too. It is hard when you have so many guest because food and drinks can be so expensive. We are already spending a fortune on our Wedding day that we just couldn't do it 2 days in a row. Since the Welcome party is at 9:00pm people would have already eaten, so we will just have drinks. I may get a groom's cake and have it during that time. If I had a small wedding then I would do something like Fantasmic. My pre-reception is already set during Illiminations so I didn't want to do anything else like that anyways. I do envy brides with smaller guest list because you seem to have more options. I just couldn't get my guest list that small.

How do you find out what bands are playing at HOB? I never considered them because I thought it was a jazz club, and jazz gives me a migraine.

I was going to have one of these groom's cakes at our Reception but changed my mind. I think they were around $200 or $300 and serve about 35.

I keep trying to figure out how to post the information, etc... for House of Blues information. I cannot post links yet on disboards, so it is making it a bit difficult :badpc:

If you go to the main House of Blues website and then type in special events under the search area, it will link you to that site that explains some of their options. (You may have to choose Orlando location also to narrow it down, not sure.) It has adobe versions of menu choices, etc... The sky is really the limit. The lady I spoke with stated for a group our size (around 40) could go to the main dining (like a big dinner reservation really) and eat off the regular menu. We would all sit in the same area, just would have general public also around ...this is not a huge deal for me for this particular function, so to save money I may just go this route. BUT, you can also get private areas to host plated dinners, areas that host reception (appetizers and drinks only), and you can even rent the whole place out.

As far as who plays there....tons of different bands. For example...Greg Allman is playing soon, Heart is coming...and of course INXS (on my wedding night... :cool1: ), Joan Jett is coming also soon....and of course their are always much "smaller" bands that play. Every Sunday their is a Gospel Brunch which is typically very cool (I haven't been to the one in Orlando...but in New Orleans and Los Angeles they were awesome...and I don't even listen to Gospel music :goodvibes )

If you can't find the info based on what I was limited to give you...let me know. I will try and copy and paste it onto another post if that works better.

It really is a neat place!! My WP said they are really nice to work with...and my experience so far has shown that.
