I don't want to sound like some kind of a snob, (I'm seriously not) but i"m wondering where I can get good hamburger when we go down to Disney. We have a dairy farm so at home I get fresh, home grown lean hamburger. When my mother, daughter and I go to Disney we usually rent a condo for seven days. We usually get our groceries at Wal Mart. The problem is I"m a bit of a finicky eater and the hamburger there just doesn't taste good to me. If anyone has any good suggestions, I would be very grateful.

Is there any way you can bring your own hamburger from home? Freeze it and bring it with you if possible.

I've thought of that, I'm just to worried about if it would thaw and get blood on my things. I know I could put it in zip lock bags but I"m afraid it might leak. There seems to be a lot more blood in our hamburger than in the hamburger from the stores

I agree that the wal-mart meats never look very good. Publix has much better looking meats down there, but that may still not come close to what you like.

We buy a lot of our meats from a local butcher here in Canada, he has really nice ground. Suggest that you might look for a butcher shop down there. It may be more expensive than WalMart, but a lot cheaper than what might happen in your suitcase if you are flying. (Aside - I worked at the local airport many years ago, and can tell you first hand what meat looks like after a few days in a lost bag...)

Did a quick google for "Butcher Shop Kissimmee" and "Butcher Shop Orlando" (second one gets you choices closer to downtown). A couple of minutes of reading reviews zeroed in on Meat Emporium, 12720 S Orange Blossom Trail. A little bit of a drive from most resorts/rentals, maybe 15-20 min by car? Only 4 reviews, but all positive.

That's just how I find things I am looking for down there while dreaming of our next excursion to the world. Maybe one of the Orlando members would have a better recommendation.

On this trip we won't get into our vacation rental for a couple days. The meat emporium might work well. I knew i could count on the the Disboard members for good ideas.

Go to Whole Foods at the corner of Sand Lake and Turkey Lake Roads. They have grass fed beef, and other organic meats there. It's the closest thing to butcher you are going to get near WDW. If you want a little drive go to Petty's in Altamonte Springs on 434. They don't necessarily have organic, but they are a butcher type shop.

We prefer Whole Foods.

D'oh! Whole Foods! Never even thought of them! We shop there every trip as DS has food allergies (Celiac) and WF has all his favorite GF brands. Never even thought about their meat department!

Much closer to Disney than the other options discussed.

Whole Foods sounds like the closest and possibly easiest one to get to. Thanks, I sincerely appreciate the suggestions.

Is this thread real? OP, are you really concerned about finding "good, fresh meat?" You're going on vacation, presumably...so how about leaving the ground beef home and letting a decent restaurant make your dinner? Heck, even a chain restaurant like Chili's or Applebee's makes a pretty good, fresh burger. Don't buy burgers at the parks, because they're not that good. If you have a sam's club membership go buy meat there if you're going to be doing cooking.

Are people really telling you to bring frozen beef in zip loc bags? Just say no. Don't mean to offend, but please don't bring beef with you on your trip. Thanks.

WDW Paul,
You're right, we are on vacation, but vacation can mean different things to different people. I'm traveling with my 75 yo mother and Down Syndrome daughter. We get annual passes and make about 4 (8-10 day) trips a year to Disney. I'm able to do this by being frugal. For us that means shopping well and eating in the room often. We need to schedule "down time" for grandma anyway. When I posted the question I felt confident that friends on the Disboards would offer some good solutions, which they did. It will be just a short drive to Whole Foods after one of our Sea World days. I'm confident that over the next few years I will make use of this information many times.

When we raised our own beef, we just selected other foods when we ate out or traveled. You could eat fish and chicken instead. Or go slightly vegetarian.

I would second the recommendation for Petty's if you don't choose Whole Foods. We always bought our meat at Petty's when we lived in Melbourne and thought that they were a great butcher.
