Grocery store madness

I went last night as I wanted to make sure that we had bread, milk, and some munchies in case we don't leave for a few days as I usually grocery shop on the weekends. The lines at Safeway were bad last night but not as bad as they were in December when the big storm hit just before Christmas. When I went there was still milk and some bread. Much better than last time when there was none. The gas station lines were also pretty long.

Meijers was insane last night! Yesterday was my day off and I should have went to the store earlier but I wanted to wait until DS got home so we could get his hair cut. I had to go to that store as I was out of even the basics.

Guess I need to watch the news, not even sure what time it's supposed to hit this area.

And why does everyone need to buy milk, bread and eggs??? Does everyone want to make french toast when it snows? DH got milk and bread because we were out anyway. He went yesterday around lunch time.
Good luck with the snow everyone. We aren't expecting much but it will be enough to cancel the activities. :woohoo:

:confused3 Is that not a tradition in NJ?

It is silly, isn't it. :rotfl2:

I try to keep my food stuffs at levels that I don't need to rush out when everyone is. I'd rather not deal with the snowcrazed crowds. And if I did goof, I think I would rather just do without for a few days. Thankfully I don't have little ones who need formula, diapers or milk and they can handle being deprived of chocolate milk for a few days. :thumbsup2

The forcast for Long Island, NY is 5-6 inches of snow tomorrow. We had our 27+ inches the week before Christmas.

I'm hoping it's not that bad. DS7 is in Cub Scouts and they are supposed to be working on their Pinewood Derby cars. They are racing them on the 26th so there's not much time left to get them started.

ETA: I have to go to the grocery store later this morning and am hoping that it's not too bad since most people are at work. Gotta get them wings for Superbowl Sunday.

Oh it's absolutely a tradition in NJ, never fear we are as crazy as everyone else. :lmao::lmao:

I usually ask DH if we have enough food in the house so that I know whether or not to stop on the way home. His response is "Yeah, I believe we do have enough food to survive the next 24 hours." :rotfl2:

My shoprite order is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow between 5 - 7. Of course, we're out of milk (I wanted to schedule a pick-up today, but because of the storm, all slots were filled, and our shoprite is about 50 years old, with narrow aisles, filled with seniors). I'll get the milk from a deli, order pizza tonight, and fill the fridge tomorrow night (family of 7, and haven't shopped in almost 2 weeks!).

My News (Baltimore) just showed the lines at the grocery...AND the liquor store:rotfl:

We live nearish that area and it was the same thing here. Everyone was buying deli meat and liquor. My husband and I were confused until we remembered the Super bowl on Sunday! Or people just like to sit in their house and drink during a blizzard!
I went to the grocery store to get stuff to make my sons birthday cake and it was like the day before Thanksgiving! Crazy!!!
I'm a food storage kinda girl thanks to all my Mormon friends, so we are good. I felt silly standing in line with green gumdrops, powdered sugar, marshmallows, and loft house cookies, while everyone else was buying milk & bread.

I usually do our weekly shopping on Sat. AM but I went on Wed. to stock up knowing that I won't be able to shop at all this weekend. The stores were calm on Wed. Yesterday, they were a madhouse! I drove past several grocery stores and there were cars looking for a place to park. My dh saw cars lined up on the road trying to pull into the parking lot of a store on his way home from work!

We're planning on being stuck at home for at least several days, if not more. Schools are closing 2 hours early today and church already cancelled services on Sunday.

Just got this this morning from the Weather Channel:

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CST FRIDAY NIGHT...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR A MIX OF SNOW...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CST FRIDAY NIGHT.

* A MIXTURE OF SNOW...SLEET...RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED OVER THE AREA TONIGHT. THE WINTRY MIX IS EXPECTED TO SWITCH TO ALL SNOW ON FRIDAY AND TAPER OFF BY LATE FRIDAY EVENING.

* ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 5 INCHES ARE EXPECTED.

* MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR CHANGING ROAD CONDITIONS. SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATING...ESPECIALLY ON UNTREATED SURFACES...WILL RESULT IN DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT UP TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. ROADS MAY RAPIDLY BECOME SLIPPERY ONCE THE SNOW BEGINS...SO MOTORISTS SHOULD PLAN FOR A SLOWER THAN NORMAL TRIP. BE ESPECIALLY ALERT WHEN APPROACHING BRIDGES...OVERPASSES...AND CURVES.

The bridge warning reminds me of when my mom and I were driving to Cincinnati this past summer and it could have been lack of sleep, but we kept announcing to each other that we should be careful when driving on bridges, as they may ice in winter, while passing through whatever state it is that has that warning posted before EVERY SINGLE BRIDGE; it was funny each and every time.

That is not silly.

That is a badge of emergency preparedness. :thumbsup2

No Mormon friends here, pack rats of parents. It's genetic. :rotfl2:

20-30 inches here today and tomorrow. I'm glad we braved the madhouse of walmart last night, because DH's work won't send him home until it really starts snowing, and I don't have a car. We managed to get TP, milk, bread, chips n dip, cookies.. all the essentials of life in this house, lol. Although the cookies somehow made it into my cart without being on my list. I hate how that happens when I take DH shopping with me!

We moved here from California almost 2 years ago. So when we had our first snow storm approaching, my sons teacher told me that I should go to the store to prepare.

Well, I didn't know what the heck I was doing, so I just shopped like I was getting ready for a super bowl party. I bought chips, soda, ingredients for my 7 layer dip, and some meat to bbq with. Once I got to the check out line, I noticed everyone was getting milk and bread. It made no sense. If I'm going to be stuck at home for a couple of days, why not make a party out of it? Who the heck wants to eat milk and bread for 2 days?:confused3

Ha ha!!! I agree!!
The last big snowstorm in December one of the moms told me about how she was in Sams Club and a lady was totally freaking out because they were out of milk, and she didn't have time to go to another store before the snow hit. Now I understand that if you have kids at home you can run through milk fairly quickly, but what's the big deal if you have drink water and juice for a few days and have eggs or oatmeal instead of cereal? Its not like milk is an essential part of our diet. If I was worried about being stuck in my house for weeks on end (which must be what the milk and bread hoarders think right? Never mind that we don't live in the boonies and chances are they won't even be stuck for 24 hours) I would be buying dry beans, flour, yeast, canned meat, jerky, water, and things you could eat with out heat or electricity if needed. And toilet paper. Maybe powdered or canned milk? (all things we keep in the basement for "just in case" because I'm paranoid like that)
I grew up in the Mountains and when we got heavy snow, we also got power outages. I envision all these people with gallons of milk in stuck in the snow in the back yard to keep cold because the fridge is out...and raccoons with milk mustaches.
If I'm going to be stuck in my house for a weekend I want yummyness! Chips and dip sound completely reasonable to me! 10 loaves of bread and 5 gallons of milk? Not so much!

I'm hoping that's all it is. We're stocked up here normally, but in case we get more snow, I sent dad out yesterday to get some things I needed to make soup.

My husband went to the store yesterday because we were running low on essentials. Beer, chips and dip. :thumbsup2
