Grocery Shopping?

When grocery shopping do you buy the marked down meats? Usually around here when they are marked down they look down right disgusting. Today when I was at the store they had already marked down all the meats with a sale by date of tomorrow. They all looked just fine.

What are your rules for purchasing these meats? I'm just curious how many people buy these.

Occasionally I buy them. I've worked in the food industry since I was 17 (a long time, lol!) and am a former bakery manager for Sam's Club, so I've taken LOTS of food safety courses and sanitation training. Usually if meat is "brown" it's still o.k., unless it has a sour smell to it. When people look through the packages of meat and touch the plastic, it makes the meat turn brown. Also, oxygen is what makes blood turn red, so if the meat has been packaged for a few days, it will turn because it's been without air for a while.

I only buy my meat at a butcher, no mark downs around

You know how the smell changes just a bit when the color changes? Well I can't stand that smell so that's why I'm so picky. Yeah, I know I'm weird.

Lucky you! That is one thing I would LOVE to see around here.

Pretty much the only time I'll buy meat is when there is a coupon on it. My Shaw's tends to overstock on sale items and mark them down pretty fast. As long as it looks ok, I'll buy it. If it doesn't look like the full price stuff, I don't take the chance. I always freeze it or use it right away. Haven't died yet!

I buy marked down meat all the time. Usually it looks just the same as the meat that has recently been stocked. I never have had a problem with it, or else I wouldn't buy it. We use it right away. Food doesn't last long in my house!!!!!

I do if I plan to cook it that night. Meat turns brown from being exposed to oxygen. As long as it doesn't smell bad, it's fine. If I get home and it smells bad, I call the store and let them know I will be returning it for a refund and I've never had a problem doing that.
