Grocery Planning...

We will most likely not be arriving until after 7pm at the hotel (flight gets in at 5pm). We have a 2br booked for the week and are bringing another family of 5 with us for the trip.

We were planning on taking ME from the airport to AKL.

I'm wondering if it's easier to send the hubby's to get groceries in a taxi(with a detailed list ) and meet us at the hotel instead of ordering from one of the online grocery stores? We have 5 kids between the two of us ranging from 2.5 yrs - 7 yrs old... who will have just taken a 12hr plane trip (including time spent waiting in airports).

Or is there a closer grocery store that is open late that us DW's could go to after the kids are all in bed?

If there is a closer grocery store (where and which one) OR which online grocery store is preferred and how do they work?

I've heard good things about them.
Be careful if venturing out at night and take the cab the resort recommends. I wouldn't go to Goodings at Lake Buena Vista because their prices are high. There are a variety of other stores including Super-WalMart, Publix and others within a reasonable distance.

I recommend that you rent a car for 1 day. There are rental agencies at or very near to WDW. That way you can take your time shopping, get your groceries and anything else that you forgot to bring with you.

Good idea about the car rental! How late is the SuperWalmart open? Approximate address so I can mapquest it? We've got one here that we are used to shopping at too. Familiarity and all that.

Is the SuperWalmart in an okay area if we were to go out at 8pm to get groceries (two women)?

On a recent trip we used gardengrocer.com, I believe the delivery charge was 10 or 12 dollars. I figured I couldn't go to store via taxi for that price and it was cheaper than renting a car.
I ordered groceries online, and they were waiting for me at bell services when I arrived.

After 12+ hours of traveling, the last thing I want to do is venture out in an unfamiliar town to an unfamiliar grocery store with a long list of groceries for 10 people. Try gardengrocer.com. Bell Services will keep your groceries for you (cold items stored in a fridge) and all you will have to do is have them delivered and put them away. I have used Garden Grocer with great success in the past. Their prices may be a few cents higher and there is a small delivery fee but it won't be what you will pay to rent a car or a taxi each way.

We have used GardenGrocer in the past. You pay for delivery, the cost of the food is marked up and you pay a tip. Our last order had a few errors and it took 3 days to get it corrected.

Our motto is if you want it done right, do it yourself. Publix is a impressive store just 10 minutes away from WDW. It's a nice area and we shop there every trip. We load up on their deli fried chicken. The chicken microwaves well when you want a quick snack. You can also use the car to pick up some take out for the first night.

There is a Publix just off 192 near Orange Lake that really isn't all that far from AKL especially if you use Sherbeth Rd. We shopped there on our last visit and it is a very nice clean store that will provide opportunity to purchase everything you need.

I totally vote for Gardengrocer.com!!!! We have used them numerous times and had super service!

To me..its not worth getting in my car/or rental car...driving in Disney traffic (which is never slow..?)...going to a grocery that I am not familiar with and they are never laid out the same...not to mention this is MY vacation time (!)....why am I spending it doing this.....when I should be doing this.... LOL???

having a list....and someone bringing everything to me...is my idea of a vacation and so worth the small fee they charge to do this (plus it means I do NOT have to take 2 teen boys there...I YI YI....lol)

Thanks for all the ideas and thoughts.

We are debating driving down to Spokane and then flying over to Orlando (about a $2500 savings after I've included the gas to drive to Spokane)... if we do that, then we will definitely be going with gardengrocer... our travel time will end up being 16 hrs and there is NO way I am shopping after that.

If we fly out of Calgary, then I don't know... the verdict is still out.
