My daughters want me to make them seat covers for when they go to the store with their little ones. Does anyone have any tips? I looked at the pattern yesterday..and the store wanted $15..95 for it!!! !! I took a good look at it and I think I can do it myself without paying that much for a pattern. Do any of you have one of these covers? Or has anyone attempted to make their own? How functional are they? Thanks - Barb

I bought one for my dd from Ebay about 3 years ago. I used it everywhere....from small shopping carts, to the larger ones at Sam's Club....to the high chairs in the restaurants. Mine is very well made with lots of thick elastic around the edges and nice batting. It wraps all the way around the shopping cart and is nice and thick. I think I paid around $30 for it. I have washed it alot and it still looks new. Everyone would stop me and ask me where I got it from......and tell me what a great idea it was. Not sure how to make them....but it doesn't look too hard.

I had bought the pattern in hopes of having my mom make me one too. They were normally about 15.00 for the pattern, but Joann's Fabric runs sales where all patterns are $1.00. I bought a ton then and sold them on eBay. The premade covers actually sell for around and are so very worth it. I figure Cam has sweaters that cost more than that which he was only able to wear twice before growing out of them. We use this daily for all of the reasons the above poster mentioned and will continue to for a few years.

From what I hear they aren't hard to make, but if you are going to do it right with the batting, edging, toy holders, etc. it will end up costing quite a bit for the pattern and supplies. I would suggest just buying them. The quality is great and they hold up so well. Not to mention the time you save.

It is worth the investment.

I'm on my second grocery cart cover. The first one that I bought was the Clean Shopper (http://www.cleanshopper.com/). It has more of a quilted material and fastens with velcro. I also purchased a "Clean Diner" from them. I didn't really care for these products because the Diner was a constant struggle to fit on a restaurant high chair and the velcro wore out very quickly on both products.

The cart cover that I use now is the Floppy Seat (http://www.floppyseat.com/). I like this design a lot more. It's much more plush and has elastic around it so it is very easy to pop it on the cart when you have a squirmy baby in your arms. It also folds up into itself. The best part about it is that it's very free-formed and flexible so you can also use it on restaurant highchairs, so you don't need two seperate covers. If you have a Babies r Us nearby, you can check them out there.

Both covers had loops on the front that you could attach toys to. Also, I've noticed that some shopping cart covers (I think the one sold at Target by Infantino) only cover the front handle and the base of the seat, not the sides. I think that is a silly design since most babies want to touch EVERYTHING. Make sure that yours covers the entire seat area.

You are such a nice mom/grandma to be making shopping cart covers for them! I agree that $16 for a pattern is crazy.

My tip if you/she end up making one - don't use a lot of padding! I love our Floppy Seat but it is a pain to take anywhere - it's way too bulky. When DS was tiny he would fall asleep in it, but otherwise the padding is just wasted space. I do still use it (he's 16 months old) because I do think it helps keep us healthier.
