Groceries

When we were at WDW last fall, I saw several resorts that had a small area of groceries. I am beginning my research for a Jan trip and thinking about a "home away from home." However, if we fly down, how will we get some of the other types of groceries? Any ideas? I am thinking maybe: meats, frozen things. . . Some of the stuff I can take down in a suitcase, but just looking for ideas on some of the others.

Those of you who have stayed in these resorts - did you like it? Was is nice to be able to take care of some of your own meals? I took our toaster down and some English Muffins w/pnut butter for us to have for a few of our breakfasts.

Did it seem to save you money to do this - or does it seem to be a wash? (the price of a home away from home and less meals or a regular room and purchase all meals)

Thanks, in advance guys! :earsboy:

If we fly, we don't take any food. While we are at the resort we usually p/u liters of soda, snacks, and donuts.

We recently returned from a trip to AKL. DD has to drink Gatorade every day due to a health problem. We had http://www.wegoshop.com/location/wgs-location15.htm
deliver Gatorade, bottled water and a few snack items to the resort. The service was GREAT!!! I e-mailed my list and set a drop off time. When we arrived at the resort we called and they arrived in about 20 minutes. You can pick what store you want them to use, and request specific items. They charge for the groceries (of course) a small fee for gas ($3.00 I think) and then a service fee (depending on the total of your order.) It was so easy. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we just stored the groceries with our luggage. If you are having frozen/dairy/meat delivered it would be best to schedule a drop off time after 4:00 so that your room is ready and you can refrigerate these items. I wasn't sure how it was going to work out, but I would definitely do it again. WeGoShop was great!!!

If you hire a town car service to pick you up at the airport they make a free 30 min. stop to a grocery store. We usually do this on our way down. It's much cheaper to buy a 12 pack of soda and beer for the room rather than in WDW. And also I'm a PEPSI drinker and seeing as they only sell Coke in WDW it's nice. I also know there are some grocery stores just outside of WDW but that's about all I know.
I have stayed in OKW many times and found that we only made one meal in it. Although we were childless at the time. I know my aunt and her family make just about every meal in their room and it seems to work for them. We on the other hand go for the food in WDW. I think you'd need to decide if it would be right for you.

I packed a suitcase full of food items, and then used a collapsable cooler for my carryon. A cooler on wheels would be GREAT! I froze cooked chicken breast and brought lots of other stuff. I also used the town car grocery stop for milk. We managed quit well in a regular room at POR. It was so hot, that we ate mostly cool foods, salads, etc. There are several tips posted on these boards about food tips.

I find breakfasts out to be quite expensive considering all it takes is milk, OJ, cereal and the occasional pack of donuts to make my family happy.

I've seen many good ideas here from folk who say everything from taking a cooler on the plane (probably under 50#s, duct taped and checked?) to shipping a box of dry and paper goods to the resort to using wegoshop. These all sound like great ideas, however all seem to involve *a lot* of advance planning or packing. I'm considering the Fedex'ed package of paper goods, cereal etc and just supplementing it with refridgerable items from the store.

Does anyone have an idea of how much a half gallon of milk, OJ, a loaf of bread etc are from the resort stores?

Which limo company is this? I looked into happylimo(?) and they only offer a 15 minute stop. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes just to check out of a store (more if you're talking Walmart)

At the gift shop in POR, 1/2 gallon of milk was 2.99. It seems like they only had 2%. I know they didn't have skim. Bread was also about 2.99/2.75. I didn't price the OJ. I picked up my milk during the TTC grocery stop, I paid 1.99, which isn't much of a difference, but I was able to get skim.

Someone on these boards recommened the limo company named Sunray.
She said they were really good & they provide a 30 minute grocery stop.
We will be using them next year. :cool1:
