We are staying at the HOJO and not planning to have a car at the beginning of our trip. Can anyone recommend a grocery store within walking distance or an easy ART ride near the HOJO?

Thanks!

I think you can have them delivered. I'm sure there is a small fee involved but it would be way less work. Hopefully someone will chime in who remembers which store it is.

Target is down the street on Harbor. It's far, but walkable. My DH did this on our last trip. You could take a cab there and it would probably be pretty cheap.

I like the delivery idea from Von's, but it's pricey and I usually end up spending more than I normally would to get free deliver.

vons and i believe albertsons delivers you can take a city bus from in front of 7-11 on harbor and katella to food for less farther up on katella about a 10 min bus ride you can shop and catch a cab back cheaper than delivery. ART goes on harbor to target etc but would probably take awhile. there is a little bodega style grocer on katella past gardenwalk next to comfort inn not much selection i believe one of the art trolley goes past vons near crystal cathedral.

You could take the OCTA #43 bus north on Harbor Blvd to a few different stores, but there's a walk involved. Fare is $1.50 each way (exact change).

Here's a map: http://g.co/maps/vnh5q

  • Von's is about a quarter mile east of Harbor Blvd and is a full service, well stocked grocery store.
  • Walmart is about a half mile east of Harbor Blvd and that one has a full grocery section. Better prices than the other options, but a longer walk.
  • Sprouts is a Trader Joe's/Whole Foods style grocery store (good food but you won't find your usual brands). It's in the center west of Harbor Blvd.
If you zoom in on the map you'll see exactly where the bus stops are. There's also an In-N-Out Burger near Harbor and Orangethorpe if that would help sway your decision about which grocery store to try. Also the Disney Character Warehouse (iffy in my opinion) is near the Walmart.

We have found it much easier to have groceries delivered to Hojo. We have just done this again for the trip we are currently on as we don't have a car. You can order online at Vons and they deliver for as little as $6.95. There is a $50 minimum, but we easily met that. Each time the groceries have been delivered before we have arrived at 3:00, and even placed in our room. Simple and no complaints! If you want to think of it this way, the delivery fee more than equals out either bus/taxi fair and your time!! I would highly suggest it over a trek to the store. They will even honor the club card prices as long as you have a Von's/safeway card. Saved us a bunch!!

You can also take ART south on Harbor to Target. I believe it is route 1.

Von's also seems to run regular specials for free delivery on your first order. It has worked out great for us!

I think Vons delivery will be the way to go. I set up an account and have started picking out some stuff (for our July trip)! Their prices seem about the same as my local grocery stores. Glad to hear HoJo's will accept the groceries with no problem. I was thinking I might give them a call to know to expect them.

Thanks for all the input!

Unfortunately, Albertsons stopped delivery service several years ago.:)

Does anyone know how early you have to put in an order from Vons for it to be delivered that day? Also know how long it takes for your order to be delivered?

There is a delivery schedule at Vons.com where you can pick your delivery window. Once your window is chosen, it will tell you the order deadline. Just an FYI, I placed my order Tuesday night at about 8 pm and my groceries were waiting in our room when we arrived at 3:00 on Wednesday. I had picked the mid day 4 hour window since it was the cheapest and I knew the front desk would accept them even if we hadn't arrived yet. On our last trip, I ordered at midnight and they were still there before we were the next day!!:thumbsup2
