Grizzly River Run

I'm a cruel person, LOL. Used to even have a tag all about my love for watching people get soaked! :rotfl:

Shhh I am too!! My kids named the geyser Willie. We like to stand on the bridge and cheer "Go Willie" as we watch those poor people get soaked. It's evil I know, but fun.

What happened to your tag Molly? I remember it....

Oh, I took it off. That and the other I had were just too long, and though I tried to love them, after all they were things I had said, ultimately I just never got used to them.

Oh that is TOO funny.

Has anyone here been on the ride similar to GRR at Sea World? The name escapes me now. Talk about getting wet...

We went on after having spent 4 days at DLR last December, thinking it would be about the same...oh my. Not even close. In addition to giving spectators the option to pay money to fire water rifles at you as you float past, you end the ride by going directly through a sheet of water. We spent the entire rest of the day absolutely soaked to the bone. Fun on a hot summer day, probably...but not in December. Not even a poncho would have helped, I suspect.

wow, i have ridden GRR many, many times and have never been wet from the geyser, not even a drop, as a pp said it works on a sensor so when the raft gets close it shuts off, i guess i am just one of the unlucky ones....

You may be talking about "Journey to Atlantis". We all love this ride, my Dad could do it over and over if the wait was not so long when we are there. Once is enough for me.

I just looked it up online, and it's "Shipwreck Rapids".

The similar one at Sea World is called Shipwreck Rapids (Journey to Atlantis is their "coaster"). I have been on it only once because of the sheer soak-factor of the ride! I managed to make it through most of the ride without getting too wet, and just as I began to give myself a virtual pat on the back for doing so, we rounded the corner and saw the sheet of unavoidable water. I might as well have just gone through a car wash lol. We went on a cloudy May Grey day last year, and I'm not in a hurry to do it again any time soon.

I showed DS8 these two posts, and his response was "COOOOOL!" Sounds like his kind of thing. He told me we should maybe plan a trip to Sea World, but he doesn't really want to "bother with the animals and stuff". After checking these out, I don't think anyone could convince me to go on either of those rides. If DS8 ever gets to go, I'll send DS10 and DH with him. I'll be sure to get some great pictures. :thumbsup2

Well if he's that into getting wet, he shouldn't skip the 'animals and stuff'. The dolphins and orcas get people in the lower parts of the stadium just as wet as any of the rides. :lmao:

Good point. He's just not that interested in the marine life aspect of theme parks right now because we had season passes to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for a couple years, and I made sure we got our money's worth.

That sensor must not have been working when I rode it because that is what drenched me!

I've watched the geysers for longer than I should admit, and there seems to be no sensor, no rhyme or reason. It just depends on when you're going over it. They don't go off every moment, they might be timed, I don't know, but (when they are actually ON) some people just don't get hit with it at all, some people have their rafts going over it as it's rumbling but it doesn't hit them when they go over it, some people run right into a spouting geyser, and some poeple have it rumble under then it goes off just as they are coming off of it, which probably causes the MOST fun geyser action to watch (and experience). Just when you think you're safe!

But if you have SEEN the geysers going (at the very end of the ride, after you've gone down the last hill where you generally turn all around, when you think you're just on your way back to get out of the rafts) and not gotten hit, then you're very lucky or unlucky depending on if you wanted to get wet. :)

Sometimes the geysers go off and will only hit half the boat, sometimes it hits just one person, sometimes the whole boat...it's just really random and I'm sure the physics of water under pressure has a lot to do with it.... ;)

I believe there are two sensors. The first one activates the geyser as your boat gets close, the second one shuts it off just before you get to it. Every now and then, the rafts are very close together so a second raft can start up the geyser while the raft in front of it is still nearby or even over the top of it.

You can actually see what I believe are the sensors if you look.

This has been what I have seen and experienced as well. There have been times when we have been going over the spot where the geyser is and then you hear and feel the rumble:scared1: That's when you know the last part of the raft going over the spot will be getting wet and the screaming begins!

We were at DLR 6/19-6/22. The geyser was running! DS8 was very hopeful but alas was not in what he refers to as a lucky boat, aka a soaked boat. I wasn't feeling warm enough to ride at the time, and the rest of the family only rode once. Not being able to get fastpass for Grizzly decreases our enthusiasm for repeat riding. The Grizzly fastpass machines seemed to be exclusively devoted to WOC distribution until at least 3 or 4 each day.

FWIW, in all my visits I have only seen the FP machines for GRR running ONCE, and that's when the wait was already an hour long. 45 minutes long, no FP machine. They really waited until it got LONG before they opened the FP machines. So it's really not the WOC FP's fault, but just the way they run the machines for GRR.

When we were there on June 6th the geyser was on. When we went on June 20th the geyser was off. I wonder if time of day plays a role.

Went back in May, Wed-Mon of Memorial Day weekend. DD6 got her first taste of GRR Friday evening. It had shut down, so we waited, and when it opened back up around 8:30pm there was no one around. So we rode once with no wait and she loved it. We proceeded to ride at least 6 more times in a row, with no more than a 2 minute wait in between. We rode it 3-4 more times again Sunday night. About the geyser, there seems to be no rhyme or reason. On these 10 or so rides, we got hit by it several times, scared by it a couple times (it stopped just before we got to it) and there was no sign of it the other couple of times. Of the times we did get hit by it, once it went off just as the front of our raft got over it, which I think was the worst. It also went off just before we got to it and stayed on, and went off when our raft was over the middle of it. So in my experience it is just the luck (or unluck) of the draw.

PS - Why do you go on a ride that is made to get you soaking wet if you do not want to get wet? Maybe it's just me, but that just seems counter-intuitive.

We almost always go during peak times, spring break, Thanksgiving, summer. Generally we have been able to grab fastpasses between 10 AM and 11 AM. We once had three sets of them and used them all in a row starting at 2 in the afternoon before heading back for break. Just kind of a bummer that it's not going to be an option for the hot summer months.
