Grits- How do you make/like them?

I love grits. But being a northerner with a sweet tooth, I prefer them with real butter and a little brown sugar. :)

Yeah, I was gonna say...doesn't southern cooking require that ALL food have lots of fat added in order to taste good? My grandmother (originally from Alabama) can't stand my step mother because (among other things) she gripes when my grandmother cooks stuff in bacon grease. Like...pretty much everything she cooks. Hahaha. But ooooooh man, there's just nothing better than my MeeMaws cooking. ::yes::

Stevenpensacola, thanks for the link. Don't know if I'll order any grits, but I might just have to order some of Paula Deen's Butt Massage. :rotfl2:

I've gotta be more careful when reading topic headlines (I subscribe to the RSS feed). When I saw the subject line, I thought it said, "girls..."

I'm such a heathen, but I eat my grits downright weird. I like shrimp and grits, grits with a ton of cheddar cheese, garlic, and butter, and grits with dark molasses (????).

And I hate black pepper. :confused3 I told you in advance--weirdo!

DD loves her sweetened with molasses. It looks so gross

I don't know why sweetened grits sounds icky to me, but I love cream of wheat...sweetened. :confused3 The texture is really close.

The other day when I tried cooking them I gave them to my son with just butter on them and he looked at me like I'd been smoking crack and asked me to get the honey for him. What can I say...there's just not a southern bone in his entire body. :rotfl:

Everyone should know that the proper way to eat your slow-cooked homemade grits is to eat them with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage.

When you get your eggs and grits on your plate, you add a good dollop of butter to the grits, then mix the eggs and grits together. Salt and pepper to taste....then break up your bacon/sausage and mix it in with the grits/eggs....
I'm drooling as I write this....

There is place just outside of Helen, Georgia that still makes real, stone ground grits "Georgia Ice Cream"...they are incredible.

YUM YUM!!!!

Dear heavens! Did you HAVE to describe it so well? At least my description was rather bland so as to keep the drool off the keyboard! :( Now I have to go to Shoneys for breakfast soon! ;) (All the grits, bacon, and eggs you can eat for one price! :lmao: )

A little salt and pepper, some butter, and sometimes cheese. I'm glad I'm off work tomorrow because now I know what I'm having for breakfast :thumbsup2
