Grew up on folk music, LOVED A Complete Unknown!

We enjoyed it very much, too. We were teens during that time, and it brought back many intertwined memories of music and history. It’s one of the few recent movies that I’d like to see again.

@georgina and @CarolynFH Do you think anyone can watch this movie and enjoy it?
Do you need to know a lot of backstory to "get it"?
I ask because I am not a huge Bob fan, partially because my parents were more fans of Simon and Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas (so kind of Folk music adjacent I guess) and that is what was usually playing in our house.
I am familiar with his music and I don't dislike it, I just don't have an attachment to it in any way.
I didn't think I wanted to see this movie but I am hearing sooo many great things about it I am now thinking it might be worth a watch.

That's a tough one for me as a fan of his music. You don't need to know a backstory, the movie shows a lot of that. (Maybe the fact that Woody Guthrie was dying of Huntington's.) A lot of the movie is him writing songs and there are a lot of musical performances. It touches on his personal relationships and relationships with other musicians, and is well-acted.

Yes, I do. I learned a lot about his relationships with Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and Joan Baez, and it illustrates the progression of his music against the background of world events. I think anyone who’s interested in the early 1960s and the music of that time would enjoy it.

Yes, that might be the only thing that would be helpful, although I think it doesn’t really matter as far as enjoying the film because the important thing is that Woody Guthrie was a significant influence on Bob Dylan’s music, and the movie makes that clear. My DH thought he had had a stroke. OTOH I learned about Woody Guthrie’s Huntington’s chorea because he was Arlo Guthrie’s father!

We're going to see it tomorrow. Really looking forward to it. As I was already 21 at the time period set for the movie, I recall that time period very well. And I do recall the consternation raised at and following Newport. I still have his LP vinyl 33's from before that time, as well as after, up through John Wesley Harding.

Remember, @alohamom, both S & G as well as The M's & P;s were mostly acoustic folk before their popularity skyrocketed with a more rock, amplified accompaniment. The music from these two groups are timeless.

Great point!

My Dad is a Bob Dylan fan, so I was familiar with a lot of his music. I wasn’t as familiar with Pete Seeger or Joan Baez’s music. My husband, 20 year old son and I saw the movie and loved it. It’s so impressive to me that the actors played and sang the music.

We saw it as a family on New Years Day. It was like a pop culture history lesson for me and an ancient history lesson for DS. Decently entertaining though and appropriate for a mixed audience, if that matters to anyone. The most surprising part to me was Dylan's relationship to Johnny Cash, and Cash’s popularity in the folk scene. I also wish they had included something about Dylan’s early life and roots. There was none of that.

We went to see it today! We thoroughly enjoyed it! Parts of it was filmed in Cape May, and it was fun to recognize our town!
