Hi all. DW and I visited WDW 10 years ago in 11/99 shortly after we were married. My work sent me to a seminar -- and the World was an after thought. We spent three days parkhopping and thorougly enjoyed ourselves. But, I remember thinking I would not want to visit during the summer and fight the crowds.

Now ten years later, we have two little ones - DD 8 and DS 6. We've visited DL a couple of times (it's an 8 hour drive from home) and the kids have been begging to return. So, we thought we'd go back this fall. But, then we saw the ads for the 4/3 promo, got WDW fever, and pulled the trigger for August. It was our only choice with schedules and school.

When DW & I visited in 99, we didn't plan at all. Now that I've got kids, I want them to have as much fun as possible!! And I'm worried about heat and crowds in August. So, I started googling and what did I find? The DIS boards. It quickly became apparent that there are a million details to consider. I'm finding that anticipating is tons of fun - it's just somewhat overwhelming and addictive at the same time.

So anyway - thanks to all the posters. It's a blast reading your hints, suggestions, reports, and all.

BTW - DW and I aren't telling the kids yet. It's kind of like anticipating Christmas.pirate:

So - any hints or tips for helping the kids, DW and I survive the heat and the crowds in August? Thanks!

:welcome:

to the DIS!!!!

I understand the vacation thing and not wanting to miss school, we last traveled to the world in Aug and well it was HOT and HUMID!!! BUT still had tons of fun!!! This year we are going in June, kids are on summer vacation, I know it will be hot and humid but who cares we are going to have fun........

We also go August because of the kids school schedule. And yes everything you have heard about the heat and humidity is TRUE! But if it wasn't bearable we wouldn't be there with a park full of people who also pick August for their vacation!!:rotfl:
Staying at a Disney resort gives you the opportunity to take advantage of magic hours at the parks! Everyday there is a park that either has early entry or after hours (when the park closes) for Disney resort guests. For the after hours entry you need to present your room key,and everyone who is 9 and over needs one, and you get a bracelet that is checked every time you enter an attraction or ride. I highly recommend the early entry and especially the after hours time. :thumbsup2 The heat is more bearable, the lines are shorter and that means you may be able to see the show or do the ride you want that normally has a very long line. From experience, waiting in lines in the heat can turn happy people into grumpy ones pretty fast!!:sad2::scared1: We usually stay in the parks, if we make it there early morning, until noon ,that's when the heat of the day becomes intense, and head back to the hotel for a swim,a nap,or both!! ;) Then around dinner time we usually head back to the park because the sun is going down and it starts to cool a little!! Makes the parks a little more bearable and they are usually open later at night in August!! :cool1:
Hope this helps in some way!! Look forward to seeing a post about your Vacation!! Good Luck with the planning!!
BTW, the best trips are the ones that are a surprise!!!:cheer2:;)

We bought small misting fans from WalMart. They are about the size of a cassette tape and have a clip on the end. Our 11 year old son was able to clip it to his belt loop and it was much easier and lighter than carrying around those large misting fans. I think the cost was about $3.00.

Take full advantage of the extra magic hours. We absolutely love the evening hours and have even stayed in the Magic Kingdom until 2:00 a.m.!

Don't forget about Fastpasses. They are a great time saver.

Where are you guys staying? There are lots of us who can chime in with facts and pics about the various resorts.

Thanks for the great replies. I'm glad to hear others braved the August heat and had fun. I'll definately be checking out the extended hours as well as the misting fan. We'll be staying at WL. I like the idea of taking a mid-day break. I've heard the WL is fun-in-and-of itself. Anyone thoughts?

I just wanted to say welcome to DISboards and may you have a great time, have fun and enjoy in your upcoming trip. Looking forward in hearing more from you.

Have a nice and safe trip coming. :)
