Dear DISers:

Given the recent concerning threads about bad rental experiences, I felt a poll to categorize Renters experiences might be informative. This poll is for Renters only, I will link an Owner's poll later.

Please name *NO* names. This is not a witch hunt, nor a praise board.

Thanks,

-Tony

Please feel free to post details about the good, bad or ugly of your experience, just please no naming of names!

Before we purchased DVC in January, we had rented points for our vacation! We had a great experience--no problems, very smooth sailing! :thumbsup2

Voted excellent, but wish I could have added that I have rented 3 x's and that they were all excellent. I was nervous, but enjoyed my dealings with each owner. Not best friends, but became comfortable aquaintances. Would rent from any of them again.

I am an owner now, but started as a renter. Easy, smooth, not a problem at all! My last rental experience was truly excellent as the owner was SO helpful and patient.

I am a member, but also a renter.

We had guests who came with us last November and I didn't want to borrow my own points, so I contacted a friend who we met on DCL about 3 years ago and have kept in contact with.

He very graciously made our friends' reservation and we linked with ours.

This past Easter when my family wanted to make a quick trip and we were out of points (DH doesn't like to borrow), my friend also made a reservation for us.

I guess since I know him personally, I feel comfortable renting from him.

In addition, a fellow soccer mom bought into DVC last year and has some extra points. She told me to give her a call if I ever need some.

I feel much more comfortable doing it this way.

We had the pleasure of renting from a DIS member back in Dec 2005. We had placed our request in the rent/trade board and were contacted by several members (all were very friendly and helpful.)

The whole process went very smoothly, we agreed on most of the details via email then chatted on the phone to confirm. The person we rented from made the process very easy and we were very comfortable trusting the member. They even followed up to make sure we'd had a nice vacation! We would definitely rent again from this member if they have points available for rent when we go back to WDW. Although I think I'm fairly close to convincing DH that it might not be a bad idea to take the plunge and buy in ourselves...

We just experienced our first rental (1 nt only) in September to try out a villa. I must say that I had been advised by DVC members in the past to try renting before purchasing DVC (this was prior to the debates of the summer). Despite the whole thing going without a hitch I still felt a bit nervous about the whole thing until we checked in.

The uncertainty of the transaction in no way reflected anything the renter did, it is just the nature of the beast ie: handing over $ to a complete stranger that has been met on the internet. Then, the debates of the summer came up making me nervous about renting altogether. For this reason, I chose to just do one night only to check out DVC accomodations and assure only a small loss should something go awry. BTW, yes, I did checking on posts by my renter to check background as they may have for me as well.

End result is that we had a wonderful time and the people we rented from were great...would do it again from them in a heartbeat! Still hoping to purchase DVC someday soon.

Thank you to all you honest/trustworthy DVC renters that share your points with us honest/trustworthy renters!

I've rented three times, with the third trip coming up this December :thumbsup2

The first two went without a hitch, the members were great to work with and in communicating, with the first one living in Argentina, this was unbelievable! The third trip has not yet been taken but the process has been moving along just great, and I anticipate it to go as smoothly as the others.

I believe that in order for a transaction to work out well takes work on both the renter and the rentee's part. Everyone involved must do their due dilligence and then clearly communicate their expectations to one another. This is a business transaction no different than any other, and as my Daddy always said "take your time, read the fine print, sleep on it, and if it all feels right in your stomach...sign on the dotted line". Simple common sense.

Also an owner, who wanted more points in a a single year (i.e., no add-on) than I own...thru my own collossal stupidity and the bad luck to respond to one of the "bad apples," my experience was dreadful...see the "monster thread" (current 430+ posts!) "sad story from one who trusted w/out checking"...

Hopefully, I am the exception that proves the rule!!!

I have rented 4 times and have been very fortunate on all accounts. On one of the rentals we had to cancel (many months in advance, not last minute) and the DVC owner was very kind and even refunded a portion of our downpayment. I did not expect to get it back. That is the risk you take. When I have rented large amounts of points, I make sure to try and research the individual. For smaller rentals (9-12pts.) I just read into previous posts to get a feel for who I am sending my money to.
I have been very lucky to have gotten great advice from the board from DVC owners who have a wealthy of knowledge. I am very thankful for people like them. DH and I hope to be DVC owners someday, but only want to pay cash for the points. Until then we will continue to rent, hopefully from the same people if they have extra points or DVC owners like them. :thumbsup2
It is such a pleasure to deal with great people. :cheer2:

Very good experiences (two separate DVC owners) during 2005.

Our first time we were able to rent points that at a good rate since a DVC owner could not uses all her points. The owner did not know about renting until her niece explained it to her, they were going to expire in two monts so we received a very good bargain.

The second time we paid the going rate. The DVC owner was very helpful answering questions. When my had to change our plans due to something that came up suddenly relative to my DH's employer, the DVC owner graciously changed the reservation (we had already paid in full).

I have to admit I was nervous the first trip, as I had no contact with the actual DVC owner, just her niece. The second time we rented we exchanged a number of emails with the owner, and then several phone calls when we had to reschedule. The second owner even emailed me to see how we were doing after Katrina hit last year, knowing we aren't far from New Orleans. I truly liked the kind lady who worked with us on that second rental.

I plan to rent in the future but I must admit I am getting a bit nervous reading the problems on that other thread here. Maybe it is time to become a DVC owner.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread.

I voted excellent!!! I have rented once. I rented 118 points for my mother who will be joining us on our next WDW vacation. It went very smoothly :teeth:

I would rent from him again! Thanks DJ!!!!!

Tony,

I have a question. I know about pre-natal. And I know about neo-natal. What is a "Renatal Experience"???

And do I want to know?

We have rented twice from two different people - once in 2004 and now for a trip in January 07. The first went totally smoothly and the second has as well so far. It has really been a terrific experience for us, and I feel so bad for folks that have been burned on either end. I think I felt more comfortable with it both times since we weren't renting that many points, so it was less financially risky. And, since I have had a good experience with the owner we are currently renting from, I would be more likely to rent more points from him in the future if he had them available, since we've established trust with the first transaction.

Our rental went off without a hitch in 2006 - although, I must admit I was a little nervous right up until we checked into our room! The member gave me no reason to be nervous - we emailed regularly, I spoke with him on the phone a couple times, he was very pleasant and didn't seem fishy at all - it was just a little nervewracking to be forking over that kind of cash to a relative stranger! I had a good experience.

We dipped our toes into the Disney pond with a small resale contract purchased through TTS. When the deal was completed we couldn't spend our precious points! Found the R/T board and decided to rent the first vacation and bank our own points.

Lucked out with a transaction with a seasoned DVC owner. Not only did owner give a ton of information but he also gave advice as to where we could verify the information he gave. He also suggested a point transfer as opposed to a reservation rental. He told us to verify the information and he would hold the points for a couple days until we decided whether to complete the transaction.

When we talked with owner again we traded specifics, addresses, etc. We realized that we live less than 150 miles apart, he does occasional business in our small city, and we have an acquaintance in common! Needless to say, we felt very comfortable following through and the deal proceeded without a hitch. We are currently waiting to close on another TTS contract. Love DVC!

Jim:

I'm sure you remember that my wife is an OB/GYN.

Renataling is great fun, but cannot be discussed on the DISboards no matter how I 'tone down the language!'

PM me for the sorid details!

:smooth:

We are owners and have rented twice. Once before being a owner and once to tie into a hotel stay. No problems.
