We had a surplus of our points last year (didn't make it over the summer) and rented the points to 4 different people. I posted on the RT board and after a zillion and one emails, calls to Disney a contract faxed over to the potential renters, 50% up front and 50% due 60 days out two have vacationed so far and two more in Dec 2006. Yes there is a bit of a hassle with all the phone calls and emails but it all turned out well. There is a trust issue on both ends. I felt very comfortable with everyone involved, all paid on time with either PayPal or personal checks. I have communicated quickly if there were any questions and I think this helps built their trust too. I have to many morals to stiff anyone....

We've rented a few times and have rented to some really terrific people. Usually, if you treat people well and with respect they return the favor. We take care of our "tenants" and they seem to appreciate it.

I've rented 20 times without a hitch. I voted excellent. I've now downsized my points to an amount where I will no longer be renting. Despite the success, I couldn't help but feel a tad guilty about renting the way I rented.

I hate reading the thread about the "scam" rental. I also don't have that many posts, but have had great experiences when we rented points. I do have a contract but twice have entered into agreements that left me open to being cheated and have not had any problem. I do feel though that the rentee is more exposed than the renter. At least it seems that way on the surface to me. I guess if someone ruined a room or something that would be a big mess...

In any case, I 'm glad to see that most people have a good experience and I'm sure sorry for anyone who has been cheated!

I've been very fortunate renting points. The people were great and paid when they were supposed to. In fact, several called me again when they wanted to rent points. I always make sure the final installment occurs about 45 days prior to check-in so I don't get caught in the holding period.

The only time a renter backed out (and she did so immediately when she found out) was when she was unexpectedly laid off from work. That's perfectly understandable and again, it was plenty of time for me to cancel the ressie without any penalty to me.

I have rented 4 times. All 4 times I have rented an existing reservation,I had booked for a family member who later couldn't use it themselves.


I have always requested payment in full at the time I transfer the reservation to the renters name. I have never had one iota of a problem or a concern with any of the four I have rented to.

I voted in the last category because I'm a new owner and haven't rented to anyone yet. When my husband and I purchased points early in the year, there was no limit on the number of transfers in/out for the account as long as they were all in the same direction. Our plan for the future was that if we couldn't use all our points, we'd transfer them to other owners. That may still be possible in the future, but we'll see. The one transfer in or out rule is a huge restriction.

We also plan to buy points in the new AKL. When we do, we definitely will have more points than we can currently use each year. I don't plan to see any of our current points, so I guess we'll have to rent out the points we can't use. The long term plan is to be able to use ALL of our points as snowbirds during winter when we retire. That's probably 10 years away at this point. And I know better than to sell points now only to buy them back in 10 years.

As I expected, this poll is coming back with somewhat lower satisfaction rates than the poll of people renting ressies from DVC owners.

The owner's Excellent/Good score is currently about 87% as opposed to 98% positive from those who rent from owners.

I realize it's early and not a big enough sample to really tell much, but the comparisons are interesting.

I have rented to about 15 people, all of them were really nice people, and paid on time. I had a renter from Louisiana who ended up in Florida during the hurricanes! Theyeven paid me for extra points to extend their stay for when the hurricane was over!! I just can't say enough positive things about the renters I have had.

My only negative experience is "sifting the wheat from the chaff", getting to the good renters. There's a lot of "chaff" out there, people who want you to spend your time checking dates for them, but they aren't serious about renting from you. They're just window-shopping, and that's very annoying.

I did have someone from this board who wanted a transfer of points into their account. They were supposed to deposit the money into my account. I couldn't get thru to MS due to heavy call volume, and that was a good thing, because they never deposited the money! She called me 4 times, promising payment in advance, but it never happened, and I never transferred the pts to her. It just didn't feel right, so I was happy that it didn't work out.

I have rented to 5 families all have went great. I have pesonally rented twice and no problems. One family told me I have made their dream come true. It was their first trip!

It's exaggerated by "other," yes. That's a cute little thing Tony does with a lot of his polls, but it does detract from their accuracy. But if you take the "other" out, there is still a noticeable difference.

It's 98% A-B from the renters (and the other 2% is one person -- my friend Dani of Sad Story fame).

The owners score becomes 93% A-B, with most of that 7% less-than-magical portion probably made up of folks who just figured the process was more hassle than it's worth.

As I said above, both surveys suffer greatly from small sample size.

I rented out my points for the first time to repay myself for points I rented 11 months out from another member to do a grand villa stay at OKW
250 point rented to 4 different people :3 paid upin full:
one vacation completed & possible new DVC members
1 more to still make final payment
rental agreement = some comfort for both partys
I hate that non members can't call member services to check on their reservations with confirmation #

I had to rent points out this year after my dh lost his job. We had a big family trip planned (BWV GV for a week). I voted fair because I had some real doosies at first. I finally got it all rented (400 pts) to 6 great sets of people, but it took alot of work to get them. I had one cancel to take advantage of free dining. I had one who had "car problems" when it came time to pay and I searched her posts and she had 2 DVC members book for her. She did cancel both. Last time I saw her she was still shopping points for the same approximate time even though she said on another board she had a reservation (rental). I had another not pay and finally tell me they changed their minds, but I had already canceled it and moved on by then. I'd rather sell my DVC than go through all that again, seriously.
