This Poll is for DVC Owners only.

Inspired by the recent changes to MS call-in rules, and the heated debate over the pros & cons of renting......

Simply put, "Do you Rent your Points?"

Feel free to post a detailed explanation!

Cheers,

-Tony

Those who know me, know that my goal is to retire to Disney. I need 5,200 DVC points for that goal.

Initially, a 1BR from Sep 1 until Mar 31, excepting Christmas & Thanksgiving with our family. Then I plan to drive an RV around this great country of ours.

Later, when I become crotchety, I plan to stay year-round in a studio.

Both times I hope to be a part-time seasonal Disney employee (any job) for free park admission.

Since I now have too many point to use just for myself, I rent for profit.

I use this profit to pay MFs and then buy more contracts (Thanks Jason at TTS), but it is still renting for profit.

Cheers,

-Tony

Nope, we don't rent them. We usually are in point debt and borrow until there's none to borrow. But it doesn't matter to me if others rent their points. If DVC doesn't mind, then I shouldn't either.

The only problem is, I think people see a big distinction between those that rent routinely but seldom (if ever) use their DVC points for their own stays and the people who usually use points at Disney to stay, but may have a family situation or other problem that makes it necessary to rent points rarely. And, truthfully, I don't know of a way to state that easiliy in a poll. Just as Disney has vague language in our contracts about renting...the distinction is there, but subjective.

I mean, I don't rent my points, but I'm glad we can if I find myself in a bad situation...but I think is it wrong to be a "commercial" renter, and commercial renters have (IMO) a negative impact on the DVC program overall, as they routinely rent weekdays only, or make ressies for popular weeks with the sole intention of renting.

Ditto

I voted rented once, but now that I think of it we actually rented twice, though it was right around the same time. The year after we bought we had a ton of points due to banking. We rented some of them out to another member who was planning a family reunion. My husband also rented out a smaller number of points for a friend of his. Sadly (for the whole world - not just for him), the 9-11 tragedy took place during his trip.

Now that we got the hang of the whole DVC thing, I highly doubt we will ever rent points out again. We enjoy our points way too much! And now, insteading having that "problem" of excess points, I find that we are always in a state of borrowing.

I've only rented once to multiple people, but I haven't owned for a whole year yet! ;)

I did it because we got the points for this year, but can't use them. So what we used our money for was to pay the dues for that year, next year, and to pay for some of our Honeymoon trip next year.

Rented once. DH wanted to go to AKL Con. and it was a better deal to rent the points and get an AP rate (value season) on the room.

Might do it again but no plans. We are more likely to rent at cost (MF dues) to friends and family IF we have any points available.

Never rented, never plan on renting, but don't care what others do with their points.

I voted for "I wish it wasn't allowed" ONLY because I think there is a tendency on this board to assume renting is the solution to all problems. Every time a poster comes on and says, "I can't afford this and need to sell" they get recommendations for "Rent", like that is the solution to all evils.

The rent advocates make it out to be just this easy process when it can be a real hassle!

My only real gripe is with the occasional "sob story", you know... "I need the points for my dying great Aunt Alice who I don't really like so I won't give her MY points, but can't you give me points for $5 (which I can then re-rent for $12)" The abuse has made me certain that if I ever do rent I will probably have to do a background check LOL!

My paltry little contract doesn't support my 6x/year Disney habit so I am in no place to rent points.

I have however had a few transferred into my account in past, (thanks Tom Yeary!!!) and suspect that I may need to contact a very handsome, charming frog in the future to see if he has any on hand!!!!

Same for us.

I can't believe I'm the only one who rents from rinkwide! He sure gave the impression that he was a major player in the rental arena.

Should I call MS and check on my ressie?

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Just make sure you do it every hour on the hour! :lmao:

Rented once when I did an add-on and had to use 50 points between June when I bought the points and August when the new use year came up and the points would expire.

Unfortunately, I have a ressie in January that I may find myself needing to rent due to our financial situation this year.

And since we own a home in FL now, I'm giving serious thought to selling my 150 point contract and just keeping the 50 point contract. It's a tough decision to make. :sad1:

At this time I only want to go to WDW on my vacation. If for some reason that should change which I doubt It will and I can't find any other place I want to go with my points then I guess I would rent them out. I have no problem with people that want to rent there points but I do have a problem with people that scoop up the best vacation times just to get the $.

I suspect that as long as DVC doesn't require an owner to occupy the ressie, there will always be owners wanting to sell it to others.

I rent, but only for a $12-15/point. It keeps me out of the "frequent renter" catagory. :thumbsup2 I'm an occasional renter, but mostly for other vacation options or to help pay for the ever-increasing DVC dues.

I've never rented points, and I don't plan on renting, however I do like the option just in case....

Anyway, it doesn't bother me if other DVCers rent their points.

A priest once told me that if you rent too many points you'll go blind.

Can you just rent until you need glasses?
