Hi, my parents have an in ground pool and last week the water turned green and cloudy!

They wanted me to ask here if there are any experts,

Is there anything they can do besides shock treatments

also if you recommend shock treatments how long does it take?

thanks a lot

I would go to the pool store and have them test the water. Algeacides and chlorines only work efficiently if the PH and other chemicals are balanced. Make sure everything else is in order. The problem with green water is that it is much easier and cheaper to prevent than to cure.

do you know how to prevent it? they weren't very helpful at the pool store.

As DawnCt1 said, you must make sure the Ph and chlorine levels are correct. Do they have stabilizer in with the chemicals? I always add a cup of algeacide every three days. I test my water in the morning and in the afternoon to make sure everything is right.

We have a pool. You need to take a sample of the water to a good place (pool store) that you can trust. Most likely it was because you did not have enough chlorine in the water. Especially if you had a lot of rain recently.

Have the filters been running? It might be time to backwash, check the pressure in the filters, make sure its not too high...if it is, backwash

you should shock your pool regularly, if for nothing more than to break up the chloroamines.....(bacteria that has a resitance to normal chlorine levels)

If the filters, chlorine, and PH are set, you should not need to use any other chemicals, algecides etc... are not needed if you keep everything else in line.

how big's the pool? depths as well, and I can help you with the shocking, filter pressures, and times for filters to be on etc.

they,ve been shocking it every 4 hours for over 2 days how much longer should it take?:earseek:

Did they check the other levels first? You need to correct the ph, alkaline, etc. first before you try to fix the green/cloudy issue. Good luck.:D

Then I would add the algaecide and run the filter 24 hours a day until it clears. When they can start to see it clearing vacuum it on waste. After it is clear, if it is still cloudy, I would then add the clear solution. That should clear up the problem.

Hire pool guy even if it is for this one time . most places include the chemicals you need and they do all the work.

There is some stuff you can buy ( I dont knwo what it is called) at the pool store that does not allow Algea to grow . They sold us some at our local Leslies and we have not had a green day this whole summer. We have had a ton of rain here in Dallas and it is just as clear as can be

You need an algacide..sounds what like what you really need is a new pool store, they should be glad to test the water and help you.

My pool store is so helpful-- try a different one. We had a problem right after we opened our pool this year. We had antifreeze from our bottom drain spill back into the pool turning the water a lovely green and making all the levels go crazy. They had me back up and running within 48 hrs!!! Try a different place--- and take a sample w/ you to be tested.

Yep, you need a good pool store.

When you take a water sample to them, they'll need to know how large (how many gallons) the pool is to calculate the appropriate chemical dosage to clear your water and get things back in balance.

Be prepared- once your chemicals get far enough out of balance that your water turns green, you may have to make several adjustments to get it just right again.

We have a service that comes weekly and does our chemicals- it's quite inexpensive, and we've NEVER had our water get weird on us.
