I'm in NC this week and I have seen a few stores promoting Green Friday, so as to be politically correct. Are you kidding me? My BIL even said that he met a guy at Target - a security guy - who, he said, was told that he is not allowed to say "Black Friday" while at work.

Political correctness run amok, yet again......

:lmao:Oh my goodness that is stupid. It is called Black Friday, because it will put most store in the Black instead of in the Red.

Exactly what source are you basing the etymology of "Green Friday" on? When I saw the term in your thread title, I thought it was about buying "green" products, to be more ecologically correct & sound for our environment. That would be being politically correct with the times.

Or, it could be a play on words about saving green backs, or green dollar bills on Friday.

I really don't think it has anything to do with blacks, aka African Americans, as they aren't technically being referred to as "blacks" anymore, so why would there be a misappropriation of that word in regard to Black Friday?

Where is your legitimate source?

How is Black Friday politically incorrect? :confused3

The only stores I've heard of using the term "green Friday" are those that are very eco-conscious -- not used as a direct substitute for Black Friday, but as a way to promote their "green" products. Is it different with the stores in your area?

My legitimate source is what I saw with my own eyes... "Green Friday" sales ads, and my BIL telling me what the guy said. ( and the guy telling him that he was told that it was to be PC ).

As posted already, and we all know why it was Black Friday, and has been for a very long time... so why change it? Or try? In the places I saw the ads, I saw nothing about anything being eco ( green ).

I'm not doubting you saw the signs. I think what happened is like that old game of playing "telephone," where you whisper the message to someone and they turn & pass the message on down the line, and the final message becomes really screwed up after being passed around so much.

Probably by the time the Target employee was told why they can't call it Black Friday, it accidentally got twisted and changed to what he was told.

To put it another way, why did they arbitrarily pick the color green? Why not Blue Friday, or Yellow Friday? It's too much of a coincidence that the color green has a social definition now in terms of being eco-conscious, and yes, there is a "political correctness" to being "green" as it IS because we have a "green" president, pushing environmentally "green" changes and "green" consciousness.

I heard that Walmart isn't using the term "Black Friday" since someone was trampled to death at one of their BF sales.

Haven't heard that Target isn't using the term "Black Friday".

The target.com official website refers to "black Friday" so I don't think the security guard received any kind of official corporate directive. :confused3

I've seen those ads as well and didn't know what they meant by "Green Friday".

Just looked and found this

"Black Friday" is the nation's number-one shopping day, with an estimated $8 billion spent on shopping in 2004. The day after Thanksgiving was coined "Black Friday" as the day businesses started to show profits on their books, i.e. "going into the black."
Many major retailers are now referring to the day as "Green Friday," in order to avoid the negative connotations of using the word "black."

Another source calling the day "Green Friday" is Mitch Goldstone. The online photo shop owner and credit card reform activist has been promoting "Green Friday" as a "day without credit cards."

It not "political correctness" its just a Target company phrase that has to do with all the profits we'll be raking in tomorrow. It actually has nothing at all to do with African Americans or any other culture. Its just about the cash. I work at Target and while we're "supposed" to call it "Green Friday" at work the only people who actually do are the LODs. And we won't get fired if they hear us call it Black Friday, which most of us do anyhow because that's how we feel about our shifts.

This is what I heard - it is not about "green" products or buying "green" products - it is about companies raking in the green (cash). For some reason a lot of people do not like the term "Black" Friday, so there have been recommendations to change it. :confused3

.

That's just dumb. It's not like "Black" friday is racist. Do people not know why it is called "black friday"?

I worked in retail for many years, and DH still does. We called it Black Friday because we HATED working it- impossible to find a parking space, rude customers, looong day, and just unpleasant in general for employees.

Because of my "time in the trenches" in retail, I avoid Black Friday like the plague. DH, unfortunately, still has to work it every year.

My guess is the "source" who said this was done out of "political correctness" has a bone to pick. I've also got friends who work at Target and a few other places that are using the "Green Friday" title. The switch has nothing to do with politics or sensitivity to any particular group. It's both a play on "green" (for money) and "green" (as in "eco-friendly") which is popular just now in the media.

Good grief. Some folks just look for a fight....

K-mart is having commercials, purposely changing their "Black Friday" to "BLUE Friday." It is also a play on words as K-mart has Blue Light Specials throughout their stores. K-mart has had Blue Light Specials for decades. They didn't suddenly change it from black lights, which were popular back in the '70s, at the same time that African American's were called Black. ;)

:confused3 If we're going to no longer be able to say "black" friday, what about the people who have black or white cars? I have a white car. Oh my, that's so insulting!

P.S. A LOT of things are black and white.....Now what?

 I have a black can opener.
