Ronald Reagan beat out Washington, King, Franklin and Lincoln. Huh? I was disgusted with the results.

Iran Contra

His dealings (or, rather, lack of) with the AIDS Crisis.

Reaganomics

Ketsup is a vegetable.

Good grief. BTW, I voted for Franklin.

I agree completely!

I can see lots of people thinking he should be in the top 100, but the #1 SPOT?? :confused3 Over MLK Jr and Lincoln? Washington, Franklin, or some of the other Top Ten??

But, then again, I strongly disagree with several of the Top 10... Elvis? Oprah? :earseek:

Apparantly, celebrity is equated with greatness, whether it is deserved or not.

I think the whole list and the whole concept was rather stupid.

While I don't agree with him being number one, I more strongly disagree with some of the people who made the top 100. Dr. PHIL??? MICHAEL MOORE??? Please.

So many great people got left out. I think they should have had a rule that no one living or alive in the past 15 years should be allowed. No way Clinton and GWB should be top 7 of all time.

Now I do think Reagan should be Top Ten, but it is without a doubt unfair that he got #1 because of the fond memories that the living have of him. The others were mostly memories in only history books.

I think I'm taking this too seriously as it is. It's just a Discovery Channel popularity contest.

But at least the top two people to have ever lived in America were Republican presidents. :cool1:

A) Bear in mind it's based on popular votes, which means more recent folks have a big advantage.

B) I don't think it's outrageous, though I would've gone with Washington or Lincoln -- I don't think any of the others are in the same league, personally.

I think you may be right.

To be honest, I don't think there really is one greatest American. I believe that there are many people who have shaped this nation and to narrow it down to one person is somewhat ludicrous. Each of the great Americans such as Franklin, Washington, Reagan, Lincoln etc. have individual qualities that helped make them great during their time period. I also am amazed at people like Dr. Phil, Oprah, and Michael Moore making the list. I really don't see what they have positively contributed to humanity. Too much celebrity worship this days I guess. Just my 2 cents.

Why would a list of the 100 Greatest Americans include those who are purely celebrities??

(I'm not a great American, but I play one on TV. )

Dr. Phil I agree with you on. Oprah while I'll admitt has made herself rich beyond comparison does a lot of humanitarian work. And I think inspires people to volunteer and get involved in the charities that people believe in. Her Angel Network has given millions of dollars to African orphanges and schools.

Michael Moore, while not in my opinion the greatest American, if nothing else has reminded us that we as American's have the duty to question our leaders. And to make them accountable for their actions as they represent us.

There are those that use their celebrity status to take up a cause. For example
Bett Midler - AIDS
Rosie O'Donnell - Gay Rights

and manymore.

Walt Disney was also on the list. Who is probably would have gotten my vote had I bothered to even log in.

You can go to this link to see all 100 nominees

I thought it was silly. How can Oprah be in the top ten for greatest Americans,a great celebrity- okay. :confused3
It seemed more voting from people who have short term memory or not reading their history books.

reagan? gag me.
dont even get me started about reaganomics.

Last March I was vacationing in France and there was a 100 Greatest Frenchmen show on TV. Like the American show, people could vote for whom they considered the greatest personality in France. It was just as ridiculous and frivolous as the American show. Soccer players and pop stars beat out people like Marie Curie, Balzac, and Napolean.

Wow!
There is something seriously wrong with that.

When I first saw the show and looked at some of the people they thought were in the top 100 I thought that the whole thing would come down to a popularity contest that was celebrity based rather than a real examination of these 100 individuals.

While I have no problem with Ronald Reagan, I voted for him twice, and I'm betting that in 100 years history will put him in the top 25, but I can't see him being No. 1 over Washington, Lincoln, Franklin, John Adams, James Madison, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers, etc.

Go figure.

How much $$ did Trump toss to these folks to get himself on the list?
