Great things on Grand Cayman?

Hi! There were some really neat ideas of things to do on your own in Cozumel on another thread. I know some of you have some really great ideas for Grand Cayman too.

You could go to Hell and back. Not much there, but at least you could say you have done it and send a postcard.

Sea Grape beach and Courtyard beach (right next to each other) are the beaches to go to and have all the watersports, food, drinks, chairs, parasailing, etc. that you would want. Short taxi ride away (5 mins or so) and $4 per person each way.

Stingray City is supposed to be a must-do. I haven't done it yet myself (waiting to go with DS7), but plan to do it soon. Many private operators give a better tour with more stuff for less money than the ships.

Rum Point Beach is supposed to be gorgeous. Turtle Farm, Tortuga Rum Cake Factory are some other things.

We've been to GC twice. First time we rented a car through www.grandcaymancruiseexcursions.com. It was great. We rented the cheapest car for the day ($43 incl ins). They pick you up at the blue iguana which is like 3 blocks to the right of the pier. They drive you to their airport location (10 minutes) and you are in an out in a jiffy. Luckily for us, everyone rushed off the van to "get their car" that we were last in line....and boohoo, they were out of the cheapest car, so we got a free upgrade to a jeep! Awesome!

We decided to do the east side tour and get away from the crowds. We drove past the blowholes, the wreck of 10 sails, and saw some absolutely gorgeous mansions/condos all along the way...and ended up at Rum Point. Now, this place is what those corona beach commercials show you. Tons of beach chairs and no chair hogs! Lots of little stores all around. An outdoor cafe. Nice bathrooms/showers. There is also the red sail sports desk. There we booked a 2 hour tour on a glass bottom boat out to stingray sandbar. The sandbar is actually closer to rum point than where the ships dock in georgetown so it only takes 15 minutes to get there instead of 45. LOVED IT!

That was in Jan 04. After Hurricane Ivan swept through, GC has had a shortage of cars. We tried to get one for our Jan 05 visit, and none were available....so we opted to take a cab to SeaGrape Beach for the day. It was a very nice beach as well, but busier than Rum Point. You still could see a lot of the damage from the hurricane, but the beaches/water are still awesome. And, the locals are ever so friendly.

The way I look at it, you can't go wrong on Grand Cayman. Its a gorgeous island. I want to go back!

Take your picture with all the pirate statues in the streets.

Try the alcohol tastings in the liquor stores.

Don't forget to purchase your rum cakes.

Hold/pet a sea turtle at the turtle farm.

Try the local brew..stingray at rackhams (also a great place for souveniers and lunch)

Try the microbrews.

Loved stingray city...booked on our own, much cheaper. We used Native Way and had a wonderful time! It is truly awsome! Have fun!

If you ever wanted to try scuba this is the place. You can do a 1 hour course and swim out from shore to some beautiful reefs. I did this on another cruise line but I'm sure you can arrange something.

My advice for Grand Cayman, would be to do Stingray City. Should you have already done that, then consider getting a taxi to take you to Sea Grape Beach, and get dropped off at the Marriott, you are able to rent chairs, towels and showers for a very nominal fee. I believe for our family of 4 we paid 15.00. We have been 3 times to Grand Cayman, the first 2 were wonderful, however since the hurricane, only the true tourist spots are enjoyable.

Yes, there is tons of shopping right at the pier. You get dropped off right at the heart of the George Town, the main town on GC. You can purchase rum cakes just about anywhere on the island (or even on the cruise ship). The most popular are Tortuga Rum Cakes.
