Our comment card says it all. We gave everything great ratings including service, food, entertainment, etc, we even would recommend DCL to a friend. We had a great time. However, when it came to the question about cruising with DCL again. We said definetely not. There wasn't really a space to explain this to them. So they will probably think we are insane.

So we had wanted to try Disney Cruise line for a number of years. We love WDW/Disneyland (have gone at least once a year for 8 years). Everyone has told us what a great product it is. We didn't want to do a traditional Disney Cruise for a number of reasons 1) Price 2) Only 7 days 3) Lack of variety in itinerary (so even if we wanted to do B2B it isn't all that exciting) 4) Number of kids. So when the 14 day 2010 transatlantic was available for booking in 2008 we jumped at the chance.

Everyone we ever talked to said you will never see the kids even on a 7 day with 1200 kids. Swore up and down. There were only 400 kids, so a lot less than a typical DCL cruise. However, I have to say that was not the case for us. We don't have kids. We are not used to being surrounded by kids. All of our friends kids apparentally are are super well behaved. We do not hate children. In fact at our wedding last year we had about 30 kids under the age of 4. However, we saw many ill behaved children on the cruise. Talking to some people this may have been due to our location on the ship. We were on deck 6, so the rooms are bigger so more families. Kids running up and down the hall at all hours of the night, Slamming doors, screaming, knocking people over, running up and down the stairs, hitting all the buttons in the elevator with the parent standing right there, eating chicken fingers in the pool, tantrums in the shops, talking through the shows/movies (in my ear since they aren't in their seat but standing against my seat), kicking my seat through the entire show/movie etc. Apparently since we are on a Disney ship we are supposed to ignore the screaming baby at the 10:30 movie. Some of this may have been due to the expectations being built up by both DCL advertising and people's previous reviews. We expect that sort of behaviour at WDW, so I can sort of filter out the tantrums, but it's generally for shorter durations (3-4 days). After 14 days of crying kids, I had my fill.

I wish there were more adult only areas during the day. Basically there is in the quiet pool outside (can be windy/cool) , Cove (loud coffee machines), and Sessions. We tried to play games in Diversions, but there were a couple teens that would come in and be so ridiculously loud/obnoxious. So if there were more adult only areas during the day, that would have made a difference.

It also seemed as if they didn't have a good idea of how to entertain people for more than 7 days besides the shows/movies. This may have been partially due to some entertainment not making it to the boat due to the volcano. They ran "The Wheel" so many times. A good adult team trivia game would have made a much better replacement. A lot of the activities that we would enjoy (ie karoake, trivia, liars club, etc) were family activities so weren't enjoyable.

So the things that are amazing:
Dinner service. Our servers were fabulous.
Dinner Food. Didn't have a bad meal.
Quick service Food. Good variety except the lack of real ice cream (but hey I saved calories because I'd rather go without than have soft serve)
Shows-we skip them typically on the other cruise line. These were really enjoyable. The Disney productions are amazing.
Pirate Night/Fireworks
Castaway Cay

Things that were lackluster/terrible:
Breakfast food. The pancakes were stale on multiple occasions. I don't eat at buffets because the food isn't fresh. So we specifically go to the restaurant service to avoid this. Unfortunately it appears it's the same food.
Breakfast service. Most of the time they didn't check back with us on refills and only got pastries 50% of the time. Since these are the same people that serve dinner and are amazing, this has to be due to Disney's tipping policy.
The coffee in the dining room/drink station is undrinkable and we drink the free stuff at work, this caused us to spend a lot more money on the specialty coffee than we would on other cruise lines where we never do. Also espresso is not available for free (is on some other lines) so this increased our bill.
The ship is obviously in need of refurb which usually wouldn't bother us too much. The door between our state rooms wouldn't lock and the bathroom door wouldn't latch. Between the seats in the Walt Disney Theatre and the matress my back was killing me by the end of the 14 days.
Noise on the ship. You can hear EVERYTHING through the walls.
Also the boat creaked so much. It didn't keep us up, but our travel companions had to request ear plugs because they are light sleepers
Palo-honestly didn't think it was worth the money since the food wasn't that much better than the regular restaurant. Wasn't bad, but other cruise lines it is clearly a step above the regular dining room, and these seemed to be about the same.

I can see that it is a great product especially if you have kids. Or if you are obsessed with Disney (if I never hear another Hannah Montana song again....) My BIL and SIL were traveling with us and they are 100% converts and will be booking with DCL again. But for us... it was good fun, don't regret it, but it's kind of been there...done that.

However, we will be going to WDW in September.

sorry to hear about your experience. Not sure how anyone would have been able to avoid what you are describing.

Disney does attract families and a transatlantic is a lot of at sea activity. I appreciate the post in gaining a perspective.

Do you mind sharing your cabin area on deck 6? I am wondering if there is anything to be learned from room locations for these sailings.

We actually loved the sea days. Lots of rest and relaxation. Read 5 books and finished a book of logic puzzles. However, at night we like ship activities/entertainment, and found ourselves with little to do some nights. They had several adult only shows in the beginning, but seemed to have run out of ideas (might have been due acts not making it to the volcano). Like they have 7 things they do and that was all the ideas they had.

We were on deck 6 between the forward and middle elevators. Obviously a coveted location. However, we booked guarantee and were put there. Maybe those rooms aren't so coveted because they are so creaky (didn't bother me so much, but was surprised). It is also creaky in Diversions. Some of the people on deck 8 said they didn't hear any creaking and people on Deck 2 said they never saw kids (I wondered if we were on the same cruise? because I was like how can you not see them they are screaming and pounding on the doors in the hallway). So location may play a big part in that.

I find this part a little funny because one I'm 22 years old and don't have kids and two I'm not obsessed with Disney. I like some things disney, but music and tv shows, and movies do get old. I feel when I travel on DCL it is less Disney then Disney World and love it because of that. Love going to Disney World, don't get me wrong and I would go there on every vacation if I could, but if I had to choose between cruise and Disney World, I kind of feel the been there done that even if it is my top choose after cruise for vacation:lmao:.

Sounds like you had a good cruise though even if DCL isn't for you

My DW and I have been on 22 Disney cruises....a combination of 3, 4 and 7 nighters. We are booked on the WB Transatlantic in September....I guess we have witnessed all the things you have described, but when y ou go on a Disney cruise you have to expect the kids.....one of my favorite things to do is to stand up on deck 4 and look down at the atrium when the princesses are out and interacting with the small children....it is amazing to watch these cast members spend so much time with each child....we are Disney freaks and cannot leave the ship without booking something else....it is nice to hear you had a good time and the positives you mentioned are the things that bring us back year after year.....thanks for sharing.

Double Platinum Castaway Club! Congratulations!

My husband and I were on the same cruise as you - Deck 6 -#6586, and we had the "fun" the first few nights of being awakened around midnight with the chat fest two doors down in the laundry room. People were so loud and inconsiderate that we called Guest Services twice, and Disney did handle the problem promptly. Security came up for a few nights around 11pm and later, and then a sign was posted that after 10pm, it's quiet time in the hallways...
Granted the laundry is a godsend, I felt sorry for the room directly across from the laundry.

As for the kids, I, too, noticed loud, cranky kids....and especially, after paying a small fortune to do winery tours, museums, parents dragging their toddlers to these these. Kids do not belong on an adult-themed tour, screaming in the dining room - put them in the Oceaneer's Club for an hour or two.

I found after the first week the entertainment was lacking....just not enough for adults to do....and I did see older kids - 13-15 boys in the "adult" pool area for lengths of time....

And, if I see another Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, The Munsters, and Leave it to Beaver again, I will lose my mind. Disney played a loop of these shows over and over everyday for two weeks....The internet barely worked, and TV stunk.

Its interesting to read your comments. I have done DCL before my DD was born and after and haven't experienced the misbehaving children that you saw. When I do see kids misbehaving I usually give them a look or tell them to knock it off (like when they are kicking the back of my chair) but in a nice way.

It wasn't just your cruise. The same thing happened over Easter. We didn't let it bother us though, but I will say the constant running up and down the hallway in the middle of the night got real old after the first day or so.

We have been in 6588 before and it wasn't too bad. Only one night did we have an issue with loud people in there around 3:00 am. After we got up and looked out the door to see what the heck was going on, the people quieted down.

I'm glad most of your trip was enjoyable. My DH and I have cruised 4 times with Disney and loved every single one. We do not have children and do not enjoy misbehaving kids. We have never had any bad experiences with children on the ships. While lounging in a comfy chair outside of Cove Cafe one day, there was a teen who has stopped by to get something from his mom, after about 2 minutes he was kindly asked to leave the adults only area. I thought that this was great because that's not always the case on other ships. We usually book the late diner seating, much more adults, I've never seen or heard any misbehaving going on. That way we see the entertainment when most of the kids are at diner, I guess, because we've haven't had an issue. No matter where you go the possibility of children misbehaving is always there, parents don't always control their children the way I would like, but that's life. I think that Disney does a great job of pulling different ages to different parts of the ship. I have never been at a loss of having something to do. We just love the service Disney provides. My DH and I have very stressfull jobs, and to us, Disney treats us like gold, and that makes all of the difference.:worship:

You're my hero...22 Disney cruises!:woohoo: That's so awesome. We're sailing on the 5-15 Med cruise and wanted to wait until then to book a trip in 2011 on the Dream, but didn't wait because it's filling up fast! No inside stateroom available, no early diner seating available. Which is OK with me, since I prefer the later seating but other family members with young ones would have enjoyed the earlier seating. I just love cruisin Disney

We did have late dining, but that is very popular on this cruise because of the time changes. So more kids than usual at late dining.

There was one child in particular that adults knew by name because he was such a terror. Some of the kids were great, but there was some subset that were just awful. The parents felt no need to correct them. I hate having to parent other peoples' kids. "Please don't kick people's seats." "Please use your inside voice."

I almost wonder if the kids were less likely to be in the clubs on this long cruise because they also found there was less new things to do. Seems like they repeated a lot of activities in the kids club. How many times can you make Flubber in two weeks? If they ran out of ideas/movies/shows for the adults maybe it was similar for the kids. So they were more likely to be out and about wrecking havoc.

I think the volcano had something to do with it. Because the last two nights they were triple booked with activities because their entertainment showed up. However, it also seems like Disney has a set activity for their 7 night cruise and that's all they know how to do. So it's the "wheel" and the band every night after they used up those 7 activities. Since other cruise lines cruise longer lengths on a regular basis, they have more unique activities to fill up 14 nights.

my family and I did the western canal cruise a couple of years ago and they would repeat most of the games, but we also had crazy kariokee and match you mate and family feud as well as the wheel of fortune game. now the trivia games are family oriented but you needed a team to answer most of the questions and they weren't all disney questions. They also had several tastings including a tequila tasting and many more bingo games than normal. I will be doing my third cruise this august and I have to say that I am looking forward to it. but I have to admit that after the canal, I decided that the most i could handle was about 10 days.

Forgive me for asking this, but how do other cruise lines differ when it comes to unruly kids. I have 2 kids, but I don't like to put up with my kids or other kids misbehaving (running down hallways, talking during shows and such), but i am just curious how it is any different on other cruises? I am new to cruising and this scares me that I won't enjoy my cruise.

On the cruises that we've been on there are little to no kids. That is because we tend to do long cruises (14-18 days) on cruise lines that don't attract a lot of families. We don't cruise in the summer when the kids are out of school. By going with late dining basically there are none. I'm sure if I went on any cruise with 400 kids on any cruise line I would see the same sort of behavior. Probably 90-95% of the kids were well behaved, but that still leaves 20-40 kids...Of course you are going to notice those 20-40 not the other 380.

That being said. Other cruise lines often have an issue with unruly adults which can be just as annoying and I saw very few of those on DCL. :)

We leave next week for the Med, while I have children (ages 11, 12, 14) that are usually extremely kind/considerate and amazingly quiet...I can not tolerate those children whose parents let them run and go mad...I witnessed a child physically assault a 2 year old at a YMCA pool, pushed her so hard from behind that she struggled to stand up and was choking...he did not know her at all, I went straight to that boy and asked him to take me to his mother....I told his mother what he did (she was sleeping with sunglasses on) and she said, "see what I have to live with." She had no concern for the child...I need to start praying right now that I can control myself around families like this....amazing stuff....sorry you had to bear that burden!

Thanks for your report!!

I am new to cruising and this scares me that I won't enjoy my cruise.

Also we didn't let it ruin our cruise. We still had a fabulous time. The secret to life is low expectations. So if we had known there would be a lack of adult only areas and known that there would be less adult orientated activities at night then other cruise lines we might have been better prepared. We are really glad we got to try DCL. We just won't be booking with them again.

My DW and I will be leaving Sunday on the NCL Dawn out of NY to Bermuda....this is our first cruise that is not Disney so it should be interesting...have made a promise to ourselves that we won't say...it would not be like that on Disney...just going to enjoy the week...going on the WB Transatlantic and then a 3 day on the Wonder in December.....Have 3 cruises currently booked on the Dream....a 3 day in May and then a back to back in December.....3&4 day......we just tolerate anything on Disney and just love how we are treated.....as I said we are Disney freaks......and probably will book another when we are on the ship.

I have to say we have better luck with neighbors when we stay offsite at Disney. I don't know if it's because of kids or something else but we experience a lot of late-night noise at Disney resorts.

I find the comments regarding the laundry room a little worrisome. I hope travel agents know their locations.

Well, thanks for your honest comments.

:)
