Great Policy on the Magic

A co-worker just returned from the last Magic Western cruise, and of course I had asked her to save the Navigators. As I was poking through them, I noticed a great policy: During family shows in Rockin' Bar D, it is all NON-SMOKING. If we attend, it will be so nice to not have to hurry to get a GOOD seat in non-smoking (much of the "non-smoking" area is literally right in front of smoking, so people at the table behind you will probably be puffing away). Maybe if this policy is successful, they will ban smoking during all the shows in there. I realize that it is a bar and that cigarettes, music, and drinking go together. But events like the 70s Party, Magicquest, and Match Your Mate last an hour at most...surely people can restrain their tobacco urges for 60 minutes, and if not, they can step out and smoke right down the hall in Sessions/Cadillac Lounge. When there is just music/dancing going on, then it can be opened up to smoking again. Most entertainment venues are non-smoking these days, and I'm really happy to see that Disney has taken another step in that direction.

That's a great policy. Hope they do extend it to all the shows.

I think if I was a smoker I wouldn't mind running up to deck 4 for a quick smoke if I wanted one.

Oh I am SO glad to hear this! We have never gone before (I have a daughter with asthma). It is nice to know that we can now go. This gives us something new to try! (Barb, I have adopted your policy have trying to do/experience something new with each cruise, of course, it is easier for us because we only go once a year  )

Good news! Being a Californian, we are spoiled with no smoking in restaurants & bars!

Being pregnant and a non-smoker I am glad to hear about the new policy. I hope that it holds true for our cruise in 11 days.

Florida is working on the non-smoking in restaurants/bars. I was one of those that voted in favor for that. I think it is the best thing.

I know I'm not the only one who is happy about this news. But are they enforcing it?? or is it the same way they enforce some of their other policies?? I can't believe Disney allows any smoking at the shows at all.

All the Boston bars & restaurants just went totally smoke free over the weekend (except Cigar bars-- ppppuuuu) and I guess it hasn't been bad at least according to the Media.

I love going to a restaurant and not have to breathe in 2nd hand smoke. :bounce: JMO, but I'm a reformed smoker, so I KNOW what it's like to crave a cigarette....

If they continue this & enforce it, we may be able to check out the family shows then. The kids both have bad allergies & I am allergic to smoke so that was defiantly not an option for us. I am wondering how heavy the smell will be though even without anyone smoking right then. I will have to peek in one afternoon & see if it bothers me at all.

My son has allergy-induced asthma.. and is greatly affected by smoke. The interesting thing though (and I'm sure those of you with kids with this kind of asthma know).. YOU may not smell it.. but if there's smoking in there all the rest of the time.. it'll still hurt the person with the allergy. The smoking toxins are all there. It's great for those who don't have the allergy.. but beware those of you that do.

My head starts throbing if someone walks past me that was smoking before so I can totally relate to what you are talking about.

The friend who stays in our house during our Disney trips (to look after things and our animals).. used to smoke. During our trip a few years ago, she smoked and left all the windows open for 24 hours before we got home. That night my son had an asthma attack.

Actually, I believe there is a temporary restraining order in place so the new law cannot be enforced. Bummer... I'm from California and still can't get used to the "smoking or non" question. I have to be as far away from the smoking section as possible. Not allergic, just can't stand the smell or the thought of someone else exposing me or my children to second hand smoke.

Here, in my city, and many other cities in Ontario.. there is no smoking allowed in any restaurant, coffee shop, or bar.

There was a bit of an outcry, it was challenged in court.. and voila.. it's still in force.

When we sail on 5/24, if the policy is still in place I definitely intend to check out the enforcement. We will probably make it a point to see the family shows because of this policy, so I will have several chances to check it out. Like many of you who have responded, I have respiratory problems that are aggreviated by smoke. When we sailed on Sovereign of the Seas, they allowed smoking in most of the interior areas, and I had a sudden attack where I could barely breathe and my nose started pouring like a faucet! It was miserable. Overall, I think Disney does a really good job of balancing the needs of smokers and non-smokers. I have never had problems on the Magic or Wonder, except in Rockin' Bar D/Wavebands. When people have lit up in non-smoking, I have mentioned it to a member of the cruise staff or waitstaff and they have taken care of it (often they notice before I even say anything and handle it).
But one bad thing I've noticed on two or three recent Wonder trips was that the non-smoking policy in Promenade Lounge was not being enforced. When it's not, it's very obvious because that whole hallway reeks...an open interior area like that, where people have to frequently pass, is NOT a place for smoking! That lounge is typically almost deserted, so maybe they are afraid that if they say something, the smokers will leave and then it will be totally deserted.

NY is like that now too and so is the county next to mine but we have to wait a few more years until SUffolk follows suit so for now if I want to go out I go to Nassua county where there is no smoking in bars....there has been no smoking in restaurnats here for years and it is very nice! Now if they would only put a "cancer hut" outside all these places so when you entered you wouldn't ha veto passthrough a dozen smokers huddled in the door way and all their smoke!

I will be going on the Magic on 5/17 and will check on the enforcement and report back to you all. I myself have asthma/allergies and being pregnant on top of that I worry about being able to enjoy the shows/music. I am wanting to do the Karoke (sp?), but worry about the smoke.

I am glad that Disney is enforcing this...however when we were on the Western cruise 04/26/03 there was a man smoking in the children's pool area. My husband and I did attempt to have him stop but he completely ignored us. The cruise staff definetely did notice him but did not approach the man in regards to butting out. To say the least we were quite disappointed in both the cruise staff as well as the smoker.

Had to get this off my chest!!! Has anyone else ever experienced this during their cruise?

Barb,
SOOOOO glad to hear the great news. Maybe on our March 2004 cruise our family can enjoy areas of the ship we did not do on our March 2003 cruise.
I can't understand how anyone that smokes can do so in front of children or anyplace where children can come in contact with it.
(A DISNEY SHIP) :(

You are VERY lucky! I'd love to see that more widespread.

Unfortunately, we've had to avoid events where there was too much smoke. I have bad nasal and breathing problems, as well. I hate having to avoid some of the fun because of this. :(
