Great Movie Ride scary for kids

It has been years since I have gone on the GMR and can't remember it very well. Is it too intense for a 4 year old? He does not like to be startled.

That ride scared me until I was 10, but I'm a bit of a wimp. The gunshots bothered me a bit but the scariest room for me was always the alien room, I still sit on the right-side of the cars to stay away from the one that comes out of the ceiling.

I still loved the ride though, mostly because of Mary Poppins. I just hid my face in my mom's lap for the scary rooms, and she'd tell me when we'd moved on. You know your kid better than everyone else, different things scare different kids.

I think the main part that may be scary is the Alien part...big alien head above and next to you. If you prepare him and let him know its going to be there, I would think he'd be fine. We've been taking my DDs since they were 4 & 1.5 yrs old and they never had an issue with it.

my kids were 3 1/2 and 11 months and were not at all afraid. I explaned there would be fire and water in the tanker scene so they were prepared. I plan to take them again next week

The best thing to do is look on ytube and see if anybody recorded the ride. If so let him watch it so he knows what to expect. I would have thought the hi-jacking of the ride car would be the scariest part. :confused3

I agree with this post. The more you prep him, the less startled and shocked he will be by certain parts.

This ride freaked me out when I was 8 years old...but it was only the Alien scene that really bothered me...if you sit towards the back of the vehicle, the alien will be back the ceiling by the time you pass under him.

My kids (age 11, 8 and 7) really do NOT like this ride mostly because of the Alien part. It's the one ride they have requested we NOT ride this trip. Usually I make them anyway, but this time I may just give in to their request....as long as they agree to do Tower of Terror instead! :lmao:

Oops, I think you have confused the Great Movie Ride with the Backstage Tour ;)

I agree with PP's, watching on youtube may help. That said, years ago(no youtube back then) it was the ONLY ride that terrified my 5 year old.

When the gunshots rang out she hit the deck; laid flat on the floor of the car and refused to resurface for the rest of the ride. I was horrified at the time but I must say we get such a laugh out of it when we all ride it now. Also, my 2 year old at the time thought nothing of any of it, happy as a lark.

Really depends on the kid. Last time we were on it, the little boy next to us, who I guessed was probaby 7 or 8, was scared by a lot of it, especially the Alien part and the Wicked Witch part. Poor little guy was crying and trying to hide under his dad's arm.

I agree that it depends on the kid. Our DD who was 4 1/2 thought it was kind of goofy....until the Alien part. Then she about jumped and hit the ceiling. but other than that part, she liked it and wasn't scared. She LOVED the Wizard of Oz part alot. :thumbsup2

If you think your child might be scared at all, try sitting in the very back of the cars in the middle. We did that because I knew our DD wouldn't like being up front where "the action is". That seemed to work. Just ask the CM's to seat you towards the back and they'll do it for you. ;)

Oop, then which one is the great movie ride? The one what starts standing in the theatre in DHS watching B/W movies then get into a car? that was even less scary. off to google it, geeze my mind is going I think, lol.

Ok,m that is the one. Sorry I flaked before. I dont think GMR was scary, yds fell sleep since its a smooth ride, 3 1/2 yo liked it.

At 3 DS wasn't scared at 5 he was. He really hated the high jacking part and was hiding his eyes in my shirt, we were front row and the robber leaned back while driving, tugged on his shirt, winked at him, and queitly told him it was all just pretend. Then he was fine and he watched the rest.

DD at 6 and 8 hated GMR and is scared of the Alien.

The alien part freaks me out too, even though I know its pretend :rotfl: My son was almost 8 when we went on this ride a few months ago and he didn't like the alien part so we just close our eyes until we are out of that room.

Our DS6 kept his hands close to his eyes for a quick cover up in case he got scared. Second time through though, he wasn't the least bit scared.

DS3.5 is my brave one. I tried to shield his eyes a bit when we thought he might get scared. He kept moving my hands so he could see and told me to "stop!" :)

As others have said, it depends on the kid. I don't think any kid will be permanently traumatized by the GMR though.

Overall, my DDs (ages 4 and 7) were fine on the ride. They did flinch a little during at the gunshots but didn't freak out, and I warned them in advance of the scene from Alien so they could close their eyes if they wanted (DD #1 did, DD #2 just didn't look up). But they were fine with the rest.
