This is not a Disney question but I posted it here because I know all of you are experienced campers who in your travels to and from the mouse have found some great places.

I am looking for a great family campground in NY or New England area, even will consider Penn or NJ area. A nice area to visit outside of the campground would be great too. We are a tenting family, DD4 just adores camping, we have camped the Lake George area including the Islands on many occasions so that is not an option for us. Looking for some nice long weekend getaways to kick back and roast some marshmellows with the kids!

Thank-you for any info on campgrounds you may have!!

If you like mountains, Glen Ellis Campground in Glen, NH is pretty nice. The campground is close to Mount Washington, White Mountain National Park, Storyland, etc. It is a wonderful area.

The bathrooms and showers are clean, but the showers are a little rustic with cement floors.

Hi Susan,

What specifically are you looking for? There are lots of great campgrounds in the area, but great's a relative term. Great for some people means a lot of activities for the kids and lots of social events for adults. Great for others means solitude and lots of time to bond as a family. It 'sounds' like you may be leaning toward the latter, but just verify and then I can make some suggestions.

Thanks!

My children are too small for too many structured activites, DD4 and DD 1 1/2. We love the beach and water and a good playground would be nice. Some place with a nice surrounding area to explore would also be a plus.

Our favorite campground other than Fort Wilderness is Sugar Ridge Campground in Danville, VT. It is a very clean campground with themed weekend and lots of activities. The sites a big and the staff friendly. It is 20 min to the Cabot Creamery which gives tours. You are also less than an hour from Santa's Village in Jefferson, NH. Their website is www.sugarridgervpark.com. I'm sure that you'd like it. It is sometimes difficult to get a site, but probably easier if you are tenting.

MandM-Mom,

Our children are the same age. I am also in search of some food campgrounds in the area. At this point, a pool, playground and close to fun site seeing would be great. I believe one of our destinations will be Lake George. I know my children will love the boat ride. We (me and the children) are hoping to make it to FW next year, but we are waiting on the go ahead from my hubby.

We pick our trailer up in a week, so we need some camping under our belt before we venture to FW.

So glad to see this thread.

In Lake George we like the King Phillips Campground. It is not right in the village just a bit outside about 10 minutes or so to the lake, but its a quiet family place with a pool and nice play area. Within walking distance for some little kiddy fun too. If you are looking for the hustle and bustle of the village this would not be it, this is more of the family place. We camped at Battlefield Park in the village but that was pre-children era. Fun close to the night places, could walk back to the campsite after a night on the town. Just a 5 or 10 minute walk to the beach. Good luck, we visit lake george quite frequently as we are Season Pass holders for Six Flags Great Escape. :goodvibes

I'm 10 minutes away from Nickerson State Park, Brewster, MA (Cape Cod) and we camp there all the time. Large sites, clean bathrooms, very cheap! Has a small store, good size playground, three ponds and if you venture off camp, the Cape has lots to offer families with small children. The only downside that I know of is traffic on rainy days and trying to get on/off Cape on Saturdays during the summer and Fridays/Sundays on the shoulder seasons. If you'd like more info, just pm me and I'd be happy to help you out. BTW, ressies must be made through ReserveAmerica.

We've camped around the Lake George area and White Mt. area but I think that the Cape has more to do for less $ -- especially visiting the many beaches. My kids got a little bored with the other campsites and I really didn't want to pay for amusement parks and the like.

DITTO!!! We visited Letchworth over Memorial Day weekend and fell in love with the place. Its not a Fort Wilderness like commercial campground;rather a New York State campground with electricity only (in some areas). The bath houses are older and could use some rehab, but were cleaned regularly from what we saw.

One of the neat things we discovered was in the little town of Silver Lake, NY just a few miles from the park. It has a drive in movie theater that was packed to over capacity the night we went but one of the nicest drive in movies I have been to in many years. (most are old and falling down)

Adjoining the theater is mini-golf and a restaurant, ice cream parlor. There is also a stage and field where they put on summer concerts. Its great to enjoy nature's wonders in the park and then take in some entertainment nearby.

We just got back from a weeks vacation. We spent 2 nights at Lake Bomoseen Campground in Bomoseen, VT. It was just outside of Rutland. The sites were small, but the pools were great and they had planned activities. They had a scavenger hunt which was so much fun and tree decorating and a visit from Santa. It is on Lake bomoseen so they have boat rentals too. They also showed an outdoor movie which reminded us very much of FW. After Lake Bomoseen Campground we moved on to The Lake George RV Park. It is a bit pricey, but very nice. Large sites, just 5 minutes from The Great Escape. They have pools on both ends of the campground as well as 2 movie theaters (free), a campers cafe, clean free showers and restrooms, shuffleboard, bocce, horseshoes, many tennis courts and basketball courts, free bingo on Monday and Thursday nights as well as live shows several times per week. We enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night.

I'm glad someone mentioned Nickerson on the Cape. That was the one I first thought of when reading the OP. I think all of the New Hampshire State Park Campgrounds are nice, have great memories of a trip sans DH with then DS14, DD10 and DS5 at Moosebrook State Park. We climbed Mt Jefferson that 4th of July weekend, though it probably was too much for the 5 year old then.

Good luck with your search.

I love this place (in fact, just came back last weekend from here)!!!

Situated on the Cape Cod canal, it is owned by the Army Corp. of Engineers, but run by the town of Bourne and you don't have to cross any of the bridges. Since it's right on the canal, plenty of activites such as biking, rollerblading or just walking along the service road, watching a variety of boats/ships go by. Easy access to the Cape and beaches

I've found it clean and has a large section for tent-camping.
