Great American Movie Ride?

I think the park is long overdue for a "classic Mickey" attraction. That would be awesome... an attraction that highlighted the development of Mickey's look and character from like Oswald to modern day? That would rock!

So agree!!!

As people said above there are rumors, but nothing concrete or in stone. I would be very upset if it were dismanted, since its a holdover from the parks original theme, but the reality is Disney is in the midst of transforming this park from its origin of being a celebration of movies/moviemaking, AND an active tv/movie studio in its early days, to more of a traditional theme park, but with emphasis on its own newer movie and tv properties. In a decade, the place will mostly be a mix of Pixar and Star Wars.

I love GMR as it is. No, I haven't seen all the movies... but I still love hearing how they were influential in more modern movie making. TBH, the ride is more about the history of making movies in America than about the movies themselves, and that to me is the coolest thing about the ride. That said, I could understand and would love to see an update or a complete overhaul. The Great Mickey Ride sounds like it would be a blast. Give us a ride through history of Mickey and save One Man's Dream by making it a part of the ride. In fact, I'd prefer that over a simple update to the movies on the current ride.

TCM has been told the ride is closing when the existing sponsorship contract ends. GMR scores very poorly in guest satisfaction surveys. The replacement is still unclear.

I am surprised about this. I know many people who love the ride. Disney NEEDS to keep some of their classic rides.

I agree that it needs some updates, but I think those need to be focused on sound, special effects, and animatronics. I would prefer that the movies mostly be left alone. It's a tribute to Classic movies. The younger generation needs to be introduced to classics so that the classics can continue to be appreciated, just as great works of art, literature, and music.

I am 36 years old and had only seen some of those movies as a kid (raiders, wizard of oz, Mary Poppins, Tarzan), but I've seen all of them since then because I asked my parents about them. Since I showed interest, they made sure I got to see them (except for Alien, which I watched on my own without permission as a child and which scared to poop out of me back then) and I developed an appreciation for the older movies. Not all of them were my cup of tea, but a good many have become beloved, such as Casablanca and Singing in the Rain, and now that I am no longer frightened out of my wits Alien (the original. Not the sequels).

In short, I hope they preserve the classics and just upgrade the ride itself.

I agree with you on principle, but I think you're the exception. I don't think most kids get drawn into the movies from the ride.

I wonder if, with a good enough budget, they could notch up the effects in a way that would excite the younger generation. A scene of Atlanta burning from GWTW. Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling (no CGI, not even green screen). The scene where Sonny Corleone is killed.

I like where you're going with that and I'm not saying to just leave all of the movies as is. I would be fine with changing some of them out for other classics. But I hope it remains as a tribute to classic Hollywood. I don't think they need to change it all to focus on just Disney products or on just modern films as many have suggested.

Focusing on only Disney properties gets dull, fast. It's fine and dandy to have things like Peter Pan's flight and I can even shrug at the new Frozen ride (though from everything I've heard a lot of people feel like it's "cheap" and after the little mermaid dark ride getting the same reaction, c'mon disney). But Disneyland and Magic Kingdom didn't open with just Disney properties based rides, and I do wish they'd give their imagineers some more leeway to come up with other things. Not everything has to have a trademarked character that's been in a movie. I'd be sad to see G(A?)MR go. I'd much rather it be updated.

I went on this for the first time in August. I actually quite liked it, but it is a little dated. Whilst the animatronics of the witch are great, the Tarzen on his swing is so bad it made me laugh. Would be good to keep the premise of the ride and update to include some more modern classics.
