Gratuity Transparency

She tells me that there are definitely international tourists who don't tip, but the majority of non tippers at their restaurant are Americans. With the worst ones being snow birds and locals stopping after church on Sundays.
That’s bad as even if they are Canadian snowbirds thy know tipping is expected here and certainly the locals after Church.

The servers overseas are paid a liveable wage and don't rely on tips. When I have dined there is no section where it states a tip is included. If you are saying that the built in prices are including part of their wages that is one thing but there is no marking of gratuity being included in my experience when out of the United States.

Yes, the servers are paid a liveable wage and are frequently schooled in the “how tos”.

Menus in many Euro countries clearly state that the tip is included in the cost of the meal. In France, most of the Benelux countries, and Monaco it’s
written on the menu and is the law for almost every food service establishment. In fact that’s what the term “service compris” means- tip included.

Thanks for the update. As stated it was based on my experience and unfortunately it has been many years since I have been to Europe. Glad to know it is stated on their menus in this day and age.

A lot of my pictures were taken with slide film back then and I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw regular 35mm film let alone the ones for the slide machines :)

I personally wouldn't bother worrying about any supposedly 'proposed' piece of legislation regardless of what state it is for or what topic it relates to. Many things get proposed and often change significantly before becoming a law. Some go nowhere and get shelved. Sometimes legislation is talked about to gauge what sort of public reaction there might be. For all of those reasons, I wouldn't bother too much until it becomes reality.

I am also not sure how knowing the way in which a specific restaurant chooses to divide up the tip makes any difference in how much of a tip you might leave. I believe Disney automatically adds a tip if your party is over a certain size and has done that for quite some time.

I love how tipping is now expected and your somehow a terrible person if you don't. It's out of control.
That's how it is. If you go to a restaurant with a server in the United States, then you are expected to tip, and I don't think you're a terrible person in general if you don't tip, but I do think you shouldn't take up one of the server's tables if you're a non-tipper.

Ideally, I think restaurants should have to foot the bill and pay servers at least a regular minimum wage like they do the rest of their staff. But they don't. So if I choose to go to a restaurant that uses a server and I don't tip, then what I am doing? I am supporting the owner who pays the servers less than everyone else, and I'm hurting the server. And for me, that's just not okay. If I'm having a day when I don't want to spend extra money on tipping, I go through the drive thru somewhere or I stop at Publix and get a sandwich instead of taking my personal views out on a server.

And that's why some restaurants do have added gratuities. Because some people don't know about tipping expectations, some don't care, and there are also people who will deliberately not tip to try to prove a point (mostly happens with a specific demographic, according to my family member)

It’s worse since 2020 … now even expected on pick up orders I for one am done with that, it was a new year resolution
when food is involved, I refuse to tip on anything other than tableservice. I can't tell how many times that my pickup orders have been screwedup so if I tip ahead of time do I get a refund?

this is not new. If you choose to eat in a table service restaurant in the US, and service is not horrible, tipping is expected. It's been that way for many many decades
I disagree, tipping has evolved into a social norm rather than a way of showing appreciation for a person’s exceptional service. This was not the way it has always been, social media has made it 100000x worse.

I don't know how old you are, but as a gen xer I can confidently say tipping has been an expectation for anything other than horrible service my entire adult life.

I will agree with you that social media might have made the tipping culture more prevalent. But I agree with others that tipping has been around for a long, long time, it's not a new thing (certainly not a new thing since the advent of social media).

Tipping for TS, Delivery, and drinks at bars has been the norm for at least the 38 years I have been paying for TS meals etc. I do recall my parents tipping as well but since it was not me…
I will agree tipping is always in articles somewhere… however that is your choice to read or not or believe or not.
Personally we tip maybe 10% on restaurant to go orders. Fast food, carts, coffee etc. rarely if ever. If I go to the same cart or coffee shop with the same person most days of the I will give the person 10-20 around Christmas.
Every one can tip as they want if one is concerned about who gets the tip hand the server cash and thank them for the service instead of adding to the payment for the meal.
