Gratuities question

"wilma-bride, post: 56566606, member: 92106"]Presumably then, you did not get the auto gratuity for head server, server and assistant server charged to your stateroom account then, since you didn't have dining room staff assigned to you?"

Correct. I gave what would have gone to them to the stateroom attendant. So he ended up with about 40.00 or so from each of us. They gave me new envelopes the 2nd night for just concierge and stateroom attendant. Since we no longer had a main dining server, etc. in the MDR, they were not even on the revised list. I increased the auto gratuity on my own for the stateroom attendant since we had a large room. I increased it by the amount which would have gone to the MDR server, etc., which is easy to figure out. In general, I find Disney cruises to be almost perfect. I have one single complaint about DCL and that is their MDR and buffet/QS food - which I find completely unappetizing and frankly far below Disney standards. I understand I am in the minority there but that is my preference and food is subjective. But I love everything else about DCL, and I want to keep sailing this line despite this one shortcoming (in my eyes). Room service for breakfast - (tipped separately in cash) - concierge for snacks, light lunch, espressos, cocktails and such - Dinner each night in Remy and Palo. I did not feel as though I lost out on anything by eating this way, and I did not feel it necessary to tip servers in MDR's since that was extra money I gave my stateroom attendant. Concierge, concierge bartender, Remy and Palo are all tipped separately of course. A few things - if you are traveling with kids this will not work because of Remy and Palo; you have to book concierge to avoid the MDR, buffets, QS, etc., and that of course is a personal decision based on whether you think it is of value for the extra cost. One final note...I did not "sit in my cabin" or "miss out" as some suggested might happen. It was a great trip. I was mainly curious if others had done something similar and how they handled it.

Thanks for the clarification. How you choose to vacation is completely up to you. I think many of the comments here were because people assumed the servers assigned to you would be missing out but if they didn't assign any, that's great. I actually completely understand not being too bothered about the MDRs - quite often nowadays we travel with friends so the dining rooms are part of the social gathering for us. If DH and I chose to cruise on our own again, we would most likely skip the MDRs altogether for the most part (although we would probably still want the flexibility to eat there if we chose so would tip accordingly - before anybody goes getting upset).
