Grand Villa if not OKW owner?

Hi - still researching and trying to decide if DVC is right for us. So much to consider. Thanks to these boards for all the information!
One question/concern of DH... if we don't own at OKW, would it be possible to get a GV for a large family vacation. I know the advise to buy where you want to stay - but we'd only want to do rarely - maybe like 1X every 5. I know they go fast - so don't think the 7 month window would work? Any success stories? Do any OKW owners trade points with other DVC resort owners and then the 11 month window could be used?

You would have a shot at some of the less desirable seasons. September, summer, maybe January. It would be a crapshoot, certainly not something you could plan on succeeding with.

I know that trading points sounds great, but I am not sure how much of it actually goes on.

We have heard, rarely, but we definitely have heard of success at seven months.

Or, you can also consider working out a trade with an OKW owner for points. If I have the points available, I would happily discuss trading points/ressies for some of the other resorts from which I am precluded from the 11 month windown.

I was successful in getting 5 nights in an OKW GV at 7 months. This was for October last year, during the Food and Wine Festival and also the Golf Tournament.
