Grand Theft Auto---good???

EROS, I have better things to do under the covers. I will save the book for a long airplane trip sometime.

Do they sell them in plain paper wrappers?

RICOLA, I'd also recommend:

Apparently the season's hottest selling video game, Grand Theft Auto, Vice City, has a number of concerned folks and groups trying to make sense of it all.

With people/groups saying.....

....I guess the endless debate of what is/is not acceptable/appropriate will continue. Personally, I think the position of Toy R Us to sell a 'game' like GTA III is ridiculous. But when we see what is acceptable today, such as the repetitive demeaning/degradation of women in our society (even in places like here on the DIS), and the increased acceptance of violent behavior, I guess the market to peddle such product is out there.

Do you have or would you buy Grand Theft Auto, Vice City? Any thoughts on the above??

Dan I had responded to a thread about this game a couple of months ago. I cannot believe that ANYONE of ANY AGE would consider this to be "entertainment". But you hit the nail on the head when you said that these types of games are being accepted today. People's morals, in GENERAL are much lower now than they were even 10 years ago. It's disgusting. I blame all forms of the media on slowly but surely lowering the quality of product they allow to be seen and heard. (I also believe it's the influence of evil that's ruling the world right now, but that's a whole different topic). I also blame parents for going with the flow so to speak, and allowing their children to own products such as this game just because they think it's OK since it's "just a video game" and they don't want their kids to not be cool and be the only ones without it. Again, that's getting into a different topic, too.

Anyway Dan, you can read more of my feelings on this game in this thread from a few months ago: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=284820&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

I'm gonna go out on a limb & say that this game probably isn't on Eros' Christmas list... :teeth:

LOL, JEFF;) ;) ;) . Rumor has it that GEORGIE lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvves this game and has issued copies to White House and Pentagon personnel on a "need-to-know" basis. He's particularly enthralled with:

"NO DIPLOMATS.NO NEGOTIATION.NO SURRENDER:rolleyes:

I just wish that he could play it as well as his rubber-ducky bathtub game.......:jester: :jester: :jester:

How's this sound...You can get W this video game & I'll get Saddam (& sons) a game called Russian Roulette. Sound fair? ;)

Uh oh....Dan you have brought up a reeeaally touchy subject in our household!!! This argument rages here often...and on this one "Mom rules"!!! I sincerely feel that kids who play violent video games turn out to be more violent people. It is impossible for a small child to watch all of that ugliness and separate fiction from reality....some of it is going to sink in. It comes out in the games they play on the playground at school and how they play with eachother....and if you doubt this just go and stand and watch a bunch of boys playing....you can pick out the ones who play these games in a heartbeat. These games breed violence and disrespect in so many ways!!! I know good, sane parents who let their young children play these games and shrug their shoulders saying, "If they don't play them at home they will play them at a friend's house anyway so I can't fight it"!!! Phooey!!! We as parents have to TEACH our kids why these games are wrong. Killing another person is no "game". It might not make us the "coolest" parents in the neighborhood...but our kids will thank us one day. Ahem...sorry...I feel really strongly about this...or couldn't ya tell?

I wouldn't buy this game for any "child".. I suppose an adult (over 18) might want to purchase it for themselves (although I can't imagine why) but that's an entirely different story..

Quite frankly, I've about had it with the moral decay and violence that is so commonly accepted nowadays.. I can't see where any of this has helped our society one bit and I'm afraid it's only going to get much, much worse.. :(

Hey, if Saddam is up for RUSSIAN ROULETTE, more power to him;) ;) ;) ;) ;) . We could accomplish a "regime change" without getting our own forces killed or needing to kill innocent Iraqi women and children. :) :) :) :) .

However, George has a "quench" for righteousness. It would only be a matter of time before we attack Iran, N. Korea, and every other totalitarian government on the globe.

2004 can't come sooooooooooooooon enough for me. This bozo has to go..........

Dan, I think this game is TOTALLY inappropriate for all children. I can't imagine why any parent would purchase this for their child. I think it's a parent's job to be very aware of all media (movies, games, music, etc.) that comes into their household and monitor what their children do. As a matter of fact, my 23 year old fiance finds this game to be so repulsive that he won't play it. I applaud him for that! :)

No way not with a seven yr old
DH borrowed this game from a friend and I wouldn't even let her in the same room when he was playing it
she has no interest in it
I think its horrible even for adults just my personal opinion
It's not a nice game and seems to stereo type everybody
He only brought it home once so I don't think he cared for it either
I really dont know why anyone would buy this for a child under say 16 or 17

we're sticking with mary kate and ashley, monsters inc, harry potter, and kingdom hearts at this house

Whew!! Having bought DS quite a few (Xbox) games for Christmas and his BD, I had to check my list to see if this slipped past me! NOPE and, it wasn't on his wish-list either. He may have a few 'bloody' or scary-type games but, I trust him. He talks with his friends about these and other non-violent games everyday in the carpool so, I'm hearing if not seeing what's going on.

AND, if I'm not mistaken, DS needs DH or myself to rent or buy any Mature rated game (at least that what he tells me and, he also believes it) so, Parents can not act stupid about what games their 'kids' are playing, if they're the ones making the purchases.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have no interest in this game. Moral considerations aside, why on earth would pretending to beat a guy up with a crow bar be considered fun. I play some violent video games. They don't bother me if the violence is not over the top and is part of the plot. Diablo was violent, but you were fighting evil. Rainbow 6 was violent, but you were fighting terroists. In both cases, the gore was held to a minimum. Graphic, gory violence for its own sake holds no interest for me.

As for the sexual parts of the game, I just don't see the fun there either. Why in the world would pretending to pick up a prostitute be considered fun? This game makes fun of prostitutes, homeless people and drug users, and yet glamorizes the people who makes money off of them. Even the elderly are presented as just targets to be killed in creative ways. Why would I want to pretend to be part of a culture with such twisted values?

I don't think playing the game will change me (though I wouldn't want anyone under 16 touching it), its just that I have better ways to spend my time than to laugh at the helpless and the depraved as I mow them down with a machine gun.

Eros: I have seen you object to various jokes that glorify killing innocent people or that make fun of the victoms of our society. GTA is just one such joke with a joystick attached to it. I am honesty suprised that you defend this game.

It's one of the top selling games this year so obviously a lot of people are buying it. :)

As for TRU selling it....why shouldn't they?

Hound, I'm not endorsing the game or any of its depreciation of women, the elderly, cops, etc. ; I wouldn't buy it for myself, but I defend the right of others to purchase it for their own "enjoyment".

I have tooooooooooooooooo many back issues of Playboy and Penthouse to go through before having time for a Playstation:jester: :jester: :jester: :jester: .........Hmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if there are any Playstation games with bikini models...........there could be a good market for them ;) ;) ;) ...........

Eros, there is such a PS2 game just for you...it's a beach volleyball game! You should check it out! ;)

GTA Vice City is a big game amongst the 11-15 year old crowd in my neighborhood....they all want it. One kid does have it, and guess where all the kids hang out?

GTA doesn't sound any different than say the Sopranos, or other violent movies that gross hundreds of millions of dollars.

Is it unappropriate for young children? Most definitely!

But people also need to keep in mind some of the movies these 11-15 year olds are watching too....it's not much different than the video games they play.

I don't know anything about the game, other than what I've read here. The sexual content doesn't bother me, but the violent content does. I wouldn't want it in my home. I definitely would not purchase it for anyone, no matter what their age, because of the violent nature of the game. I'd rather buy them something that doesn't sound so degrading and violent.

I can't defend the game. Haven't played it. Months ago this was a DB topic and I swore I'd never have it in the house when we were thinking about getting Playstation 2. Since then we've gotten PS2, shortly thereafter DH comes home with GTA3 for himself. He plays it when the kids aren't around. [Keep in mind that his preferred games are usually sports games, mine are the adventure-type platform games.]

So last night I mentioned a few of the concerns seen here...I've seen a bit of it already and it's too violent for my taste, and I say that people are objecting to the level of gore and senseless killings in the game...

...and the man looks at me like I have 3 heads.

"Yes....?"

I say that there's a lot of violence in the game.

"Sure. That's the society the game is based on."

I say that there are so many killings...

"uh-huh, I got all the Italian mafia. Now I'm going after the Cubans."

How about pedestrians?

"nobody has to kill the pedestrians."

Prostitutes?

"again, you don't have to. The prostitutes are there to give you extra life, same as in your games you kill monsters or flame butterflies or whatever."

Stealing cars? Senseless violence?

Now he's annoyed. "Yes, I suppose. Know what, when I play football instead, I'm trying to knock the teeth down someone's throat over a ball, that's violent. When you play Zelda you're killing bad guys, trying to save the world or whatever, it's still violent."

mmmm....

"It's ok to blow away vampires or enemy soldiers, right? Is that gory? You used to play Tomb Raider."

fine. Would you buy it for your kid?

"How old?"

14,15.

"Sure."

Why??

"Because it's a game. It is not real. Because I might get them a shooter game, doesn't mean it's ok to drive down the street shooting people. Any more than a Spyro game makes them think they can fly or shoot fire at people. Kids that age know the difference. There are certain things you have to do in this game that aren't great, but most games today are like that."

So there's an opposing view. I'm undecided.

I already posted on their boards yesterday after reading their garbage.

I agree parenting has a lot to do with it, but there are sickos at these companies making them! They sure do need to bare responsibility!
