GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

I keep hearing about the tax credit for traveling too. Yet another break for the wealthy. If you can spend thousands of dollars to go on vacation, you don't need government assistance.
Do you know if that was created as a copy of what Japan implemented? The difference there is that they have already a huge domestic tourism base, cases are low, etc. I've read about a few countries offering a similar scheme. JR (railway) is offering 50 percent off into next year as well.

But that is all pretty low risk in a country still closed to the outside, with low cases, and a strong domestic tourism market. I'm just curious of the plan was something similar, but by the time it was proposed in the US the cases has risen?

I do believe that health plays a big role in how well you handle Covid but you don't magically get in health in the middle of a pandemic. I see a lot of this thinking around me with gyms, arguing that better health will make us collectively handle this pandemic better and I do agree with that. However I don't agree with rushing to open gyms in the middle of it. The time to get healthy to better handle this pandemic is years in the past and the time to get healthy for the next pandemic is when this one is done and we can safely do so.

We are on day 197 of this year. My gym was closed for 73 of those days.
I've been to the gym 102 of the 124 days that it has been open.

My gym has been a life line for me during these trying times. I've often struggled to make sense of all of this, and being able to go to the gym has benefited me mentally, socially and physically.

The gym staff is absolutely committed to the highest cleaning/sanitizing/safety/physically distancing standards, and I feel very safe.

No need to wait.....TODAY is the best day to start focusing on health!

Here’s a video to the DeSantis press:
So, what he’s basically saying is that everyone in the gym is healthy and fit, whereas all the overweight people are visiting hospitals, and thus no need to close down gyms.

Of course there is absolutely no reason why anyone who isn’t fit would go to a gym. :sad2:

The constant mental gymnastics is nauseating.

Meanwhile, outside of the alternate reality of Florida, gyms are considered a major risk area due to all the sweat and heavy breathing.

The gym helps with my anxiety and stress. Unfortunately I’m just not comfortable going quite yet. I’ve been running outside (95 out with 90% humidity) but it’s not the same.

I have gained 10 pounds since the pandemic started and don’t fit into my clothes. My anxiety has gotten much worse.

Maybe the risk is worth it.

Even before Florida started putting out their COVID19 hospitalization numbers they put out a workbook showing hospital and ICU availability by county and by hospital.

Last Friday they first released Florida’s Covid hospitalization numbers and they were around 6900, with Orange County being around 485. Now Florida is at 9000 (though it was up to 9100 a few days ago) and Orange County is at 625.

The week before they put out the COVID numbers hospital availability in Orange County hovered around 11 percent. One of their bigger hospitals, Orlando Regional, showed no beds available. And then suddenly beds started freeing up.

My husband is in the hospital in another central Florida county, and they told him his elective surgery came in under the wire. They will be shutting down all elective procedures starting Monday. That seems to be going with the increased availability at those hospitals in that county, that started freeing up on Wednesday.

My guess is they have quietly started cancelling all elective procedures to free up capacity in areas all around the state. The medical community is betting the hospitalization rate is going to climb even higher.

The "Covid Bed Availability" situation is not the only metric when considering what "surge" capacity is. In my area of NJ, our ICUs were not nearly big enough to accommodate all of the Covid patients during our surge in March/April. The hospital where I first started working back in 95, right out of nursing school, converted two 20 room units to Covid rooms. It still wasn't enough at the surge when they ultimately had 80 people on ventilators, and so they had to double up occupancy in some of those rooms. We dropped of N95 masks early on to my sister-in-law who graduated with me from nursing school. She now manages two 40 bed units and one ICU there. Pulling up the hospital was like something out of a zombie movie. The parking lot was almost empty, big tents outside the hospital for intake, and the two 20 room units had plywood and makeshift fans hanging off the side of the building to create the negative pressure that was necessary to safely treat the patients. It was something to see.

So, if necessary, these hospitals can create more beds. They need to stop elective surgery, etc. But the other metric to consider in capacity is staffing. I listened to a podcast yesterday from the Washington Post. They covered the huge medical center in Texas beginning on July 1st as their surge was really taking off. And you could hear these docs getting increasingly tired as the days went on. They had expanded into many wards by the end of it, including the children's hospital for some of the younger Covid patients. One doc spoke of how they felt like in April, when they had a smaller surge, that they'd be able to power through this. At that time, everyone in Texas was in quarantine. Well, not anymore....people are out and about. We all know that mask use down there is spotty at best. And these doctors sound tired of it all.

I agree today is the best day to start on your health but I don't think gyms should be open yet. There are many ways to focus on health that don't involve the gym. I miss mine too and haven't been since March. I sure as heck wouldn't risk going now but I still stay active.

This week I've run outside, biked outside, did an open water swim, and did a few home workouts. We have this weird obsession with the gym when functional exercise can be done anywhere. All in my days exercising has actually increased this pandemic

You don't need a gym to get healthy.

Well, (thank goodness!) the CDC still puts up the daily numbers for this thing.... the spike for cases is now almost double what we saw in April.... and we thought that was a spike.... :sad2: whether it's Florida,Texas,or one of the other current hotspots, does it really matter? As long as there is easy interstate travel, this will continue.like a biiiig circle,it just keeps on going.

And the gym thing? No. Hard no. If a place of worship is dangerous b/c of indoors, large numbers, and extra breathing/singing etc....then a gym is twice that. It's summer, time to go outside and exercise.

How do we really know the spread of the virus in April? Testing wasn’t nearly as widespread. We are now reporting 700,000 tests daily with many cases being a symptomatic.
