GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

But the economy will keep faltering even with things open as long as the virus isn’t contained because many, many people will self regulate and stay home even if their states are open. You can’t help the economy until you control the virus.
This. As badly as I want to travel and do certain things, I won’t right now because the virus is too out of control. Our economy is going to be a mess until people feel safer.

The open attack on our leading scientists and public health officials is truly one of the most disturbing things I've seen so far in this colossal mess. Every single day....I scroll through the news and think to myself..."I can't believe this is actually happening." And every single day....things seem to get a little worse, more off the rails and just completely and utterly nuts.
Honestly this one shocks me too.

We literally have doctors and economists with decades and decades of knowledge and experience better than they were in 1918. We put people through 13 years of school where they are top of their class every time to get into top universities, then another 4-5 years at the top of those classes to get into medical school/Masters of economics, then again at the top of their class to get into their specialties. Then decades more work related experience that leads them to more important positions based on their experience and education. We now have people educated in their field that far surpasses anything they had available in 1918. What do we do? Ask for their opinion? Put them in charge?

Nope, we just ignore their advice, create a bunch of incorrect memes and tell them they're idiots, they're wrong, and they're con artists with evil motives. Brilliantly played western world, brilliantly played.

Isn't it great that we can afford to do that?
Everyday, more and more people are losing their jobs, between May and May 5.4 million Americans lost their health insurance, and now people who rent are being faced with evictions by the end of the month. Yes, the virus can be dangerous, for some people. But the economic ramifications may prove more deadly to more people.

If only we had nationalized healthcare and better unemployment benefits. But I think people are too selfish to pay the taxes required for those programs. So this is where we are at.

This is why we live in a republic and not a democracy.

I agree, the economy will keep faltering as long as states continue to do the open/close do-see-do. I believe the virus needs to move through the population, it can't be "controlled" Even the CDC and WHO are mentioning that the economic effects of the shut downs are going to be catastrophic. The idea behind the shut downs was to avoid spikes, not prevent viral spread.

How could it not be controlled? The exact purpose of the shut downs was to control spread. Many countries have controlled it well with contact tracing. The issue was closing later and opening earlier. Yes it's still out there, but if you have low numbers, lots of testing, and quarantine/contact trace/isolate all known cases, people are going to feel safer about going out and the economy will recover more quickly.

That said though even though I disagree with what could have happened I really 100% agree with you about opening things up at this point. Too many people disagree for a shut down to work anyway in my opinion and there's no point to keep things closed if businesses want to open them.

But companies go bust with no customers. Look at the disney parks, they're basically empty, some have said the CMs outnumber the guests!

It would be far better to shut down and use furlough processes to allow the companies to continue rather than for businesses to be going bankrupt due to no customers.

We did the reopening because we were told there absolutely would be demand if they opened, now we have businesses open paying staff and only a fraction of the customers they need to break even. Plus the more who get ill the less customers will be out and about.

I always laugh about the tax complaint. The taxes would likely be less than monthly premiums. People just don't get it.

Yep. And they’re fearful that their doctor will magically disappear, which makes no sense. I already have trouble with doctors being in and out of network at any given point in time. Super frustrating.

I’m watching the TV series the Lone Gunmen to laugh at the hysterics related to the conspiracy nutters.

Companies exist to serve a customer need or want. If you’re stuck at home, your needs and wants change. That’s how capitalism works.

Our governor just tested positive. That’s what happens when you attend an event with 5k people who don’t believe in masks or that distancing is safer. The problem is, how many people has he infected? Maybe it will help give him some perspective and push him to enact a few restrictions to slow our spread down.

I hear so much pissing and moaning about masks. Every time the governor posts an update the comments are ridiculous. However I have noticed it’s the same people who are just trying to stir up trouble. I went to Kroger today and I saw a total of 4 people without a mask. One group was 2 adults and a preteen. The kid had in a mask and the adults did not. I truly felt like we were all in it together which is how it should be. Then I went into a gas station and they were telling people they had to put on a mask. I don’t know how long that will last but if people will just suck it up we can keep the numbers down.

I feel like in tourist areas they are less likely to expect masks because they want the tourist dollars. If Disney sticks by their guns they should be able to stay open. Not sure about other businesses.

That's because WDW capped their attendance until they had a better idea of how things work in this new environment.

Who is going to pay for this furlough? It's not sustainable. Unless the government continues printing more money. Right now, the paradigm is shifting thanks to the pandemic, and yes companies will continue going bankrupt. But new companies will emerge.

I wonder if he ticks any of the vulnerable list check boxes?

The government should be printing the money. They're happy to do so for many other things so they should be doing so for this as well.

I just read that your governor doesn't believe it came from the rally. And really, who knows at this point. I would assume he was tested in the last week and it's been a few weeks since the rally.
