GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

I don't believe our southern states are spiking because of air conditioning. Many of them use A/C all year round. Honestly, it's a direct reflection of being open and not following the guidelines of keeping a safe distance apart and wearing a mask. Certainly even that is not 100% foolproof, but doing what they've been doing has just been a disaster.

I think the heat in the south drives people indoors to restaurants, bars, etc. Once inside those establishments, any person wearing a mask can take it off to eat/drink, opening themselves up for contracting the virus. Alcohol is a contributing factor as well, especially with younger people. It lowers inhibitions and increasing risky behavior. And so people get closer to each other, they get louder when they speak and that's also going to drive up the number of infected.

There's a real irony to this whole thing when it comes to Disney. They're requiring people to wear masks when outside in very high heat/humidity when, if properly physically distancing, that's where they will be the safest. However, when inside a contained space and seated at a table, they can take off their masks. I get it....you can't eat with a mask on. But you're far safer outside with no mask than you will be inside at any restaurant without one.

I think if we can learn anything from TX, AZ and FL it's that being indoors with lots of people with no masks is not wise. I will not eat in restaurants at this point.

DS24 and his roommate (Altamonte Springs/ Orlando area) just got their test results back: positive. I am not surprised based on the fact that he interns for the Orlando Pride soccer team where there were a bunch of positives and the way things are going in Florida. My dad is not too far away in Bradenton and he and his wife are being as careful as possible. Stay safe everyone.

So Cal;
The few restaurants I have entered to get take-out that have opened for dining are having a tough time getting anyone to do it. Tables are widely spaced, and for the most part vacant. Bars have been another matter. I was never much for going to bars before, but would definitely not do that now. We have seen substantial lines for bars in our area and some have had to shut down and re-sanitize due to employee cases of Covid. Nothing like some of the instances in TX and FL though - not even close.

Let's not ignore the proverbial elephant in the room though; the biggest source of spread BY FAR has been in peoples' own homes. They invite friends or family over, someone has it and doesn't know, and who wears a mask in their own home? You are far safer in a restaurant, and, as much as it kills a lot of people, it's still not safe to host or visit your friends and family INDOORS. Visiting outside is safe, and in fact the the mask isn't even all that necessary.

Excellent point. And here in NJ I know *many* people who are doing this. One branch of my family has been co-mingling between households for well over a month now. I see photos on social media of family groups socializing inside, no masks. Some claim that they have formed "quarantine bubbles". But so many of them are taking chances when out on their own in their day to day routines that the "bubble" resembles a piece of Swiss cheese.

The pandemic is really impacting a lot of friendships and families at this point. We have two weddings on the calendar. One in September and another in October. I don't know whether our governor will allow them to go forward by then, but it doesn't matter to us. We're not going to go. That may impact relationships. But it's not safe, especially as both of these weddings are hosted by parents who align with the "this is a hoax" crowd.

But seeing the virus now raging across the south and southwest, and knowing that we're going to have problems this fall, we're more resolved than ever to continue being vigilant.

We, or many at least, know that the most effective and reliable solutions to stopping the spread are the cheapest and easiest thing to do: wear masks and distance. I get what you are saying, though, about a need for treatment.

This virus isn’t a cancer. We shouldn’t have to be spending this much resource and effort into finding treatments and cures for something that’s easily preventable.

Unfortunately, we have people like in this video:

But it’s not easily preventable and those measures won’t stop the spread. They slow the spread and people should do them, but they don’t stop it. It’s only preventable as long as those measures are in place. As soon as they are removed, it starts spreading again. It’s even been suggested by the experts that this could be a seasonal thing that pops up every year, which means we won’t get it to go away with social distancing and masks.

without putting money into a reliable treatment for the future, we would need to social distance and wear masks into perpetuity. I don’t think that’s feasible. The level of compliance we have now is because most people still believe these are stop-gap measures. Forget individual businesses, whole sectors would go under as many aren’t profitable with current restrictions. I also think the longer it goes on the less people abide by social distancing and mask wearing.

Yes, bars are a huge problem. In AZ they were saying tons of young people just flocking to bars in Scottsdale. No social distancing, business as usual. Now they are in a tough situation. I have seen some outdoor dining set ups in my area and the tables seem a little too close together. Some areas are closing streets to traffic so restaurants can set up outside but it seems to be creating lots of crowds of people just wanting to get out and wander around which means big crowds. I guess it's safer to have everyone outside though.

I agree about people having guests to their house. I am seeing large gatherings starting up.

I love America. I love my rights and freedom I enjoy. but let’s also consider others. Yes it’s inconvenient to a wear mask but no one is asking you to wear it 24/7. I also don’t mind social distancing because I like my personal space.

If I hear one more person citing the First amendment as their excuse for not wearing a mask I will go nuts. When the First amendment was written they didn't even know viruses existed.

It's seems most of the focus is STILL on stay at home and wear a mask. Social distancing, cleanliness and common sense is often ignored. Masking has given many a false sense of security (and many still do not wear them properly). Guidelines (CDC) recommend distancing six feet or more and contact..not more than fifteen minutes. Wash your hands before you touch your face. Be sensible..

FL has added more new cases in about one week than my state has had the last four months.

Wisconsin has almost 27,000 confirmed cases since this started. Florida has added that many in about 7 days or less.

Eh, they had already wiped out entire populations with it. They just didn't care then either.
