GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

NJ just cancelled their indoor dining start date, and NYC seems headed there, and we have VERY few cases at all.

We've been doing so well in Virginia. We opened our inside dining (25% I think) about 2-3 weeks ago and so far so good. We are going to Phase 3 in two days which lets a LOT more people gather inside. I wish our governor would put the breaks on this seeing what has happened in the other states. I think it's bad news. But we are really good with mask compliance in, at least, the northern part of Virginia.

40 Million Americans smoke. Around their families, friends, and strangers. Slowly killing themselves and their supposed loved ones.

Over 50 years of science identifying the dangers.

People are going to do what they want, how they want, no matter what.

It’s mostly KY. Smoking rates have been dropping.

Dropped to 18-20% of the US population. I am reasonably sure that is not just Kentucky. 😁 The drop is somewhat attributed to an uptick in vaping. Younger Americans are more likely to vape then smoke. An estimated 8% of Americans vape on a regular basis. There is not 50+ years of science yet to say what the effects might be for vaping.

That is still 40 million Americans who willingly are using a drug known to kill not only the user but those around the user.

COVID cases increase when societies re-open. Bejing was COVID free for 50 days and now they are shutting down large parts of the city, because of another outbreak. I think it's easier to control in a communist government.
I am pretty sure that the phased re-opening isn't going to stop this. So now it's time for people to accept the virus as part of their everyday lives and to learn how to adapt.

New York is partially reopened, and our numbers are still going down. Our governor is not going to accept it as a part of our life here.

I really don't think he'll have a choice. The "phased" re-opening was a suggestion. It was based on the scientific community's best guess, but there was no guarantee that it would work.

He absolutely does have a choice. He doesn't have to let the phases move forward, and he isn't right now.

Look at the CDC smoking map.

https://www.cdc.gov/statesystem/cigaretteuseadult.html
Diabetes is the number one problem for COVID.

I was surprised to see only one state was below 10%. I would have guessed we had much lower smoking rates. It is purely anecdotal but I have no friends left that smoke. They either never smoked or have quit and around here is is very rare to see smoking. We are down to two smokers at work and we offer a 40% premium reduction for not smoking so smoking comes with a financial penalty assuming they carry our insurance.

But NY hasn't really opened much yet. Once they do, the cases will start rising again.
That’s in NYC and WNY ... much of the rest of NY STATE is in Phase 4 of the re-openings. Gyms, malls, and movie theaters are still closed but indoor dining is now allowed at 50% capacity. Many manufacturing facilities have re-opened as well.

However that doesn’t mean that there may well be an uptick in cases in the upstate area. We‘ll see how things progress over the next couple of weeks, especially after the July 4th weekend. Rest assured Cuomo isn’t afraid to dial things back quickly if numbers start to rise dramatically.

There’s a lot more to NY STATE than New York City.

There’s a lot more to NY STATE than New York City.

But most other states got past that point before things took a turn for the worst. I've said this before - I truly hope NY manages to keep their numbers low, but there is a real danger in the attitude I'm seeing of "we beat this" when you aren't nearly as open as other states. And I can say that because Californians had that same attitude and look at where we are now.

NY absolutely has the benefit of learning from others' mistakes and taking it slowly. It's much easier to slow down openings than it is to re-close them, which is the position many of the rest of us are in. So I hope NY continues to be careful - and that this belief of having "won" doesn't allow people to become complacent.

I'll also caution that it's easy to move slowly, but even that is still progress forward. At some point the state will have to reopen the higher risk places.
