GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

I’d feel better about those numbers if the positivity rate were lower. Looks like FL still isn’t testing enough.

New York, which has gotten a terrible undeserved reputation, never, ever had numbers this bad.
What is this? Why do you enjoy dumping on FL so much? It’s not even sharing numbers anymore - you really come across as gloating that a state may do worse than NY.

NY’s reputation is not undeserved in this. They made plenty of mistakes. As did every state in the nation. They have may have made different mistakes, but every state messed this up in their own way.
(And before anybody replies that NY didn’t have any warning, yes they did. They saw what happened in CA. They saw what happened in Italy. As in international hub, they had to know it was coming)

Why is it a competition? Do we really want to see states doing poorly? Why aren’t we rooting for each other?

This isn’t really a bad thing though. We are starting to stabilize , which is what happens before the decline.
But without a lot of mitigation (encouraging stay at home, closing indoor spaces where this spreads the most) it will take longer for the decline to start than in places that were actually shut down during their peaks. Florida is likely in for a longer period of a plateau of 8-10,000 new cases per day before a decline actually begins.

I"m not dumping on anyone. I'm just saying 14% positive rate, 10k new cases every day now, it's not good news.

I don't understand why people would argue that vaccination is not a component of herd immunity. Mass vaccination is how we accomplish herd immunity for people who won't or can't vaccinate. It isn't just about protecting the immunized person, though that is the primary purpose. A perfect example is measles, when large members of a community do not vaccinate, the virus can take hold, because the herd isn't protecting.

Some good news this morning.

I’m not into the doom and gloom as some of the other posters are. We will get through this. Things may suck for a while but by next year I’ll be walking down Main Street with a Mickey bar in my hand.
A few good things in the news at the moment like the new treatment you describe plus a very accurate antibody test and also highly encouraging progress being made with the vaccine trials.

However, I wouldn't usually bother mentioning them because too many people on this board are so enjoying the negativity it would seem churlish to be posting even the faintest hint of optimism!

NYC hospitals looked pretty bad to me. But their governor stayed the course and slowly reopened while other states rushed to reopen.

I look forward to reading papers on this crisis five years from now.
They were bad. He worsened the situation by putting COVID patients in nursing homes. Not impressed with him at all. He did a great deal to drive the hysteria and fear.

There's a lot of room for fudging and FL's numbers would still be better. How about death rates in other states outside of FL? How do those compare with NY?

Looks like NY deaths are way down and FL are up compared to a few months ago. July 19th is 18 for NY and 87 for FL.

Irrelevant since Florida isn't being honest about their numbers.
It’s not at all irrelevant. NY has to own their numbers. Why is so hard for you to admit NY may have gotten some things wrong? It doesn’t take away from what they got right. It really doesn’t matter if FL’s ends up being higher or not; NY’s death rate is really high (and they are not alone in their numbers coming from LTC - 79% of the deaths in my county do too, as did many of FL’s early deaths).

Here, I’ll go first. CA did great off the bat. Closed down the state first and when it wasn’t popular, secured our own PPE and got this beast (mostly) under control. We were the poster child. And then for some inexplicable reason, started opening way too fast and really inconsistently and didn’t have a state mask mandate in place. Plus people got bored and stopped believing the virus was a problem because our numbers were so good. And now we look like this and I can only hope our current measures are enough to get things under control, although it’s looking more and more like some areas, at least will he going back into a full SIP. And that’s terrifying in so many ways.
