Is there something that 'comes with it'?
All I'd seen is that you have the opportunity to BUY this or BUY that.
So whats the point?

My family is doing a grand gathering in Jan. You have a point about the "buy" thing though. There are 4 different things you can do as a group that the general public cannot participate in. Yes they all cost extra. I think they also make more of an effort to keep you together, if you book the same hotel. I know that probably isn't much help, but since I haven't actually gone on the trip yet...

We're doing our first magical gathering next week. To date, we've seen little or no benefit in the magical gathering. We aren't doing any of the special events you have to pay extra for so I've seen no benefit yet. I'll be happy if our rooms are close together though.

The only real benefit we have discovered is that you can use the Grand Gathering planners to assist with making dining reservations. It helped us to get CRT, which was a great benefit, at least for my daughters.

Has anyone out there already done any of these special events only for GG? My family is doing a GG next July and I'm wondering if anything is worth the money.

We just got back from a GG. It was a lot of fun. We did 3 of the 4 GG experiences. We LOVED the magical fireworks voyage (my boys are BIG Peter Pan fans). The pirates on the boats were hysterical and made the trip worth it. We also did the safari dinner, which was lots of fun too. We also participated in the Good Morning Gathering. We didn't enjoy that one as much. It seemed less organized. Also, we originally scheduled it for our first MK day, so that we could meet the characters right off the bat. Before we left for WDW, we were contacted by Disney, and they changed the date (it was rescheduled to a later date). By that time, the kids had met all of the characters, so it wasn't as exciting. We still had fun!

We did a GG in Feb. We really enjoyed the Magical Fireworks Voyage. Everyone in our GG said it was the highlight of their trip (we had over 30 friends and family in our GG). We did the Safari Dinner it was nice and the different types of food were wonderful. The best feature of the GG is that they try to put you as close as possible in the hotel you are staying at. We were staying at the WL and VWL. All the regular rooms were located withing "spitting" distance of each other (sorry, I couldn't think of a better way to describe the proximity of the rooms). I hope you all have great get togethers!
