Hey all. I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Disney World for all of my family. My brothers, sister, their kids, grandparents, etc. There will be 14 of us in total with 6 kids under from ages ranging from 10 to 4.

I would love to hear everyone's experiences with "official" Disney Grand Gatherings. Are they any good? Are they worth it?

Or, is there any other events/shows that are must dos when traveling to the World with a large group like this?

Thanks All!

Sorry I am no help, but I would love to know the answer to your question. We are planning a Grand Gathering for April 2010.

I also want to know...we've got one booked for end of April beginning of May 2010.....

Any information would be appreciated!

We are going April 28 - May 8, 2010. I haven't booked yet. I am not sure if I will book myself or thru CAA (AAA). We have a party of 10. Did you book thru Grand Gatherings?

we called Disney the other day. We'll be there April 27-May 4, 2010 at CBR, so far we also have 10 people going...

I would be interested in learning some tips for Grand Gatherings as well. We are up to 17 people going in June.

We were a group of 15 last December 5 adults and 10 children.

We did the safari dinner, Illuminations dessert party.

We were on the dinning plan so it took two table credits to have these experiences.

At the safari experience we gathered at Flights of Wonder they let you in by giving you a pin it was your "pass" to get in. You then go on a safari trip that is a bit slower than the regular day time one giving you more oportunity to see the animals. We saw the lion pacing back and forth on a rock cliff. Very cool... Then they take you to Tusker house for dinner. Our guide for the tour was very attentive and helpfull getting us settled for dinner. At dinner we had buffet selection. The more pickier people did not enjoy the food so much but the rest really enjoyed it. The food was done in an African style with some regular American food. There was a charater meet and greet with a chance for photos as I recall it was Rafiki and Timon. Some critters and birds were brought out for the children to see as well. There was an African band playing through out the evening with the chance for the kids to get up and dance.

We love this event.

Illuminations Dinner and Dessert Party. We were there too early our time to arrive was given to us wrong, lost about an hour or more of park time waiting. We did get in eventualy get in and situated. There was a host and a comedian. We didn't really think too much of the dinner/entertainment portion of this event. There were characters for the dinner we had minnie and pluto show up and dance with the children. Dessert party was the best part as it had reserved viewing for Illuminations this was very worth it. The view we had was breath taking. I was too full from dinner for the dessert. There were squares, fruit, chocolate covered strawberries, tea, coffee. (If I remember the men right the coffee here was the best they had in days):thumbsup2

We are going back this December and are booking these again they were great fun.

If you have more questions I'll see what I can do. Hope that helps :wizard:

The hard part of doing a Grand Gathering is dining reservations. You can't do them online. The only reservation I had trouble booking was Le Cellier. I could only get a 3:45 dinner at 90 + 8 days, out of the 90 + 10 I was looking for.

We were a group of 8 and did the Pirates Fireworks cruise. From what I understand it's now open to non-Grand Gathering folks as well, but even so, I highly recommend it.

We met at the Contemporary 2nd floor, checked in and then waited for them to open the "lounge". They had various food, snacks, beverages all set up and once they let us in we had our fill of all the junk food we could carry. Gold wrapped chocolate coins, pretzels, cotton candy (in bags), crackers, cheese, fruit... etc... plus warm drinks, cold drinks, water etc..

While everyone was waiting, Capt'n Hook and Mr. Smee came out for autographs and pictures. It looked like everyone that wanted to get a photo had plenty of opportunity to do so, there was a line, but nobody was rushed or turned away.

About our "sailing time" two pirates showed up with a couple flags and in character the whole time, they announced our ships were ready to sail. They did a little show for the kids and then pulled out a slip with a kids name written on it to be the flag carrier. It happened to be my niece. I'm not sure how they picked her, but it appeared to be done ahead of time. We were not the first ones to check in, but we may have been the first ones to reserve the cruise (6 months out) so that may be why they picked her. So they gave her the jolly rodger and assembled all the kids and made a parade out to the docks. The grown-ups followed behind.

Once we got out to the docks, they directed us to the appropriate ships and made sure all the kids were re-united with their grownups. We set sail and took a tour around Bay Lake and got to see the Electric Light Pageant up close. It was kind of neat, but after a week on Bay Lake in the Wilderness Lodge I had already had my fill of that music

On the way to our viewing spot, our pirate leader kept everyone entertained with songs and dances. Pulling people up who were celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, doing quizzes and giving out prizes. I think every kid got at least one prize. Our pirate was phenomenal. I thought he looked familiar and it was after a few minutes my sister-in-law pointed out that he "must be the twin brother of the fire chief in the magic kingdom" Sure enough, when I got home and looked at the photos, it was the same actor. We had some time to interact with him and "Miss Victoria" in front of the fire station the next day and I asked him if he had a twin brother who joined a pirate crew. He gave me a knowing wink and then went on to explain how his twin brother had run away to join the pirates much to the sorrow of his dear old parents. It was very well played and while I don't know this CM's real name, he did a fabulous job and is a very talented performer.

Anyway, we eventually made our way to a spot in the Seven Seas Lagoon directly in front of the Magic Kingdom. We had a perfect viewing spot. The boats held about 60 people each (I'm guessing) and had about a dozen rows of seats in bench form. We were all pre-assigned rows to sit in, so all the groups were kept together. What worked really well was the way the parked the boats at an angle so everyone had a clear view.

The true measure of how great an experience this was happened when I looked over to see my parents enjoying the show. My dad is one of those typical "guys" who never shows emotion. But when I looked over near the end of the show, he had his arm around my mom and sure enough had a tear in his eye.

By far this was the best part of our trip.

I think these are the kinds of things that Disney really excels in. They made it seamless, the CM's were out of this world great and the viewing location is not to be missed.

Highly recommended.

John

I have to second the favorable review of the Pirate Fireworks Cruise...we went in 2007 and had a wonderful time. It was well worth it (and it was one of the cheaper Grand Gathering activities).

I'm a co-planner with Belle8305 of our GG trip next June (hi, Shelley!), so thanks for the opinions!! Any more?

Wow. Congrats! I have been wanting to get my whole family to do the same but have not been successful in getting everyone on board. My brothers, and their wives and children have never been to WDW (can you believe that). My sister and myself are both Disney fanatics and have done several trips together and most recently (May) had our parents with us. We have talked Disney up so much to our brothers but can't get them to join us. They have in their minds that Disney is just some run of the mill amusement park. We have told them they are so wrong and that they can't imagine Disney without ever being there. I feel like I am preaching religion to them when I try to entice them. Would love to know how you got everyone to participate in your trip.

I did plan a trip two years ago for a group of 25 friends. We stayed at the Swan and I was able to get the nurses discount. We had a blast but did not participate in any Grand Gatherings. I just don't see the attraction to these but would love to hear more about peoples experiences with them. Maybe I will finally pursuade my family and perhaps book a GG.
