Grand Floridian Bathroom Grab Bars

I originally booked a regular Grand Floridian garden view room, but realized I will need a room with grab bars in the bathroom for a guest to get up and down by the toilet and to assist getting in and out of the shower. I recently stayed in a regular room at the Polynesian and it had no grab bars in the bathroom. Concerned, I looked to modify my reservation.

I spoke with a typical reservation CM on the phone and she insisted that I needed a wheelchair shower room that would require me upgrading to club level based on what was open. Thinking this may not be 100% accurate, I called a different number looking for the Grand Floridian directly, and was put in contact with handicap special requests. This CM assured me the “Outer Bldg-Garden View. Florida special accessible room with option for hearing accessibility. 2 queen beds, 1 daybed” would have what I needed and the CM updated my reservation.

Looking under the reservation website, I see that specific room type I was put into, and it does not appear the image of the shower has a grab bar. However, the traditional garden view room I originally had appears that it does have a grab bar based on the online photo.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Grand Floridian rooms (regular or accessible) and if they had bathroom grab bars. I find it strange that a Grand Floridian standard room would have them when the Polynesian did not.

The standard rooms do not have the grab bars as far as I have experienced. I went and toured a standard room at the GF after their latest refurb and that particular room did not have any type of grab bars or accessibility features in the room; My guess is all standard rooms would be identical.

Now, this year I am booked at the GF and I had to book a handicap accessible room with a roll in shower because I am now in a wheelchair (newly), when I spoke to a CM with accessibility services she told me they have accessible rooms with tubs with rails (wouldn't work for me) or accessible rooms with roll in showers (what I booked).

So my thought is that you will need to book an accessible room with tub/rails, it may still be a standard view but it should be booked as an accessible room and maybe put tub with rails as your main request just to make sure they know what accessibility feature you need the most.

I would also post this on the disabilities board as the will have far more information than the average guest. IMO as long as you booked a HA room they should have grab bars, I know I once turned down a HA room because of the bathroom configuration. I believe other than just HA some rooms have a roll in shower that is different than just HA.

Thank you all for the help and ideas!

I will call and add the grab bars as the special room request in addition to posting my inquiry on the disabilities board

From what I recall at the GF, the toilet area was tight (you could barely close the door to the room where the toilet and tub were located). You could reach to the side of the tub to help yourself up. We were in Big Pine Key with a lagoon view.
