A few of the travel reservation websites state that the lobby will be refurbished from June 1 through August 15. Also that some portions of the lobby will be closed off and some guest rooms will be closed off.
No one seems to get the same answer when they call Disney to confirm the timeframe or how much work will be done.

As of today, not yet. A few weeks ago I was told it would begin this Tuesday. I was also told that it would be done in small sections so that the lobby would always at least partially remain open to guess.
following, I will be in Disney on Tuesday 20 June and I am planning to go to the Grand Californian lounge bar area for afternoon drinks and some chill out time.
I suspect no "front line" CMs, have any official detailed information. Several CMs in the hotel (including an Art of the Craft tour guide) told me all renovated rooms would have showers, and there would only be bathtubs in a few HA rooms. While many (most?) renovated rooms eliminated the tub, there are still tubs in some renovated (non-HA) rooms -- photo posted by guest.
Some black curtains are masking work on rooms in the northwest corner of the lobby, but there was no work in the lobby itself (on May 27).
Just returned from a 3 night stay at GC and here are a few pics from lobby renovations. Not bad at all. Still able to enjoy the entire lobby. On the 5th of July there were high curtains and scaffolding and then yesterday we noticed that it was lowered, but could not tell what had been done. DVC studio was perfect.
