Does anyone know where the standard view handicapped rooms are located in the Grand Calif.? The last time we were there the room we had was a LOOOONG way from the elevator (essentially on the total other side of the building from the elevator--can't understand why they would put HA accessible rooms so far away). . . .this time I will have an ECV (see other post) but just wondered if there were other options available.

Thanks!

There are two elevator areas, the main one at the lobby and the other is next to Napa Rose Restaurant. You need to tell the hotel your situation so they can try to put you as close to an elevator as possible. The farthest one has to walk is from the rooms overlooking Downtown Disney. The other wing is over the snack bar and and restaurants. I have walked that many times while pin trading and it is not too far. I never been past the second floor and cannot give you specifics on where rooms are.

It is best to have it noted on your reservation. Just in case they get a notion to move you to another room. From the elevator next to Napa Rose you can got out and round to an entrance into the Redwood area of DCA.

Thanks--we were off the main lobby elevator on the third floor--then you turned right and walked all the way down to the end of that hall, then turned right again and walked halfway down the hall--we had an "interior" room on the Downtown Disney side of the complex (i.e., we overlooked the monorail, which was cool)

I would much rather be over by the Napa Rose elevator (I know where it is)-=-much easier access to Whitewater Snacks! Do you think it would do any good to call a couple of days ahead and talk to someone?

I'm not sure how they assign the handicapped accessible rooms in California, but I assume that they do it the same way as in Florida. That means that when you call to make the reservation for an accessible room, a specific room is assigned and blocked for you right away (even though they won't tell you which room is assigned). They do that so you don't end up getting to the resort and finding there are no handicapped rooms empty for you.
So, call right away to make your request for location. If you call a couple of days ahead, the room that fits your request may not be available.

Sue: is there someone specific to ask for? Or do you just call the front desk?

thanks!

Who do you call for reservations?
At WDW, you call a central reservation number and then the CM there checks with the disability department (at WDW, they call it "Special Reservations"). Special Reservations keeps track of the handicapped accessible rooms so that they know one is available that meets your needs. At WDW, Special Reservations actually blocks a specific room to reserve that room for you.

I don't know if these are special numbers or not, but they are listed in the
online version of the DL Guidebook for Guests with Disabilities posted on the DL website.

All hotels offer accessible Guest rooms and facilities.

So, I guess I would try the number for the resort you want.

Sue, thanks. I did call the hotel yesterday and was told that the room that has been blocked for us was near the elevator off the main lobby so I think we'll be good with that! :cool1:

That is good news. The bar in the hotel serves food and from the elelevator it is about a block walk to the furthest end of the site where snack bar is located. You have to walk around the pool. I do hope you get a room near the elevator. I miss the fireplace and especially when they had story time for the kids. The bar/lounge was a nice place to meet with friends. I miss going there as the restaurants were excellent.
