I don't think you're crazy. We've had good luck at 7 months over Father's Day, Thanksgiving, and during mid December. Sending pixiedust your way.

I'm looking at a calendar, Valentines Day is Saturday. If you have enough points to work with, I would book starting Friday night and then cancel the nights you don't want a few days later. I'm 3 for 3 at VGC by booking at 7 months starting Friday. Actually arrive Saturday or Sunday and stay to Friday. I think less people check-in on Friday vs Saturday or Sunday.

Actually, I had no problem getting a VGC 1 bdrm for the third week of January, 2013 at the 7 month window. I was even able to add an extra day at about 5 1/2 months out.

We were there that week this year. I did a GV at around 9 months but we needed more nights and I didn't have enough VGC points for teh GV for those, so I did a 2 bedroom for the rest.

Then at 7 months the GV was open for those extra nights and I was able to use my OKW points to nab it and replace the 2 bedroom.

As I recall, while doing the switch at 7 months, I have the impression there were other nights open at non-GV sized rooms, so you might luck out next year like I did this year!

We could not get a 1 bedroom for this weekend 7 months ago. We waitlisted, and it did not come through. Luck of the draw I guess.
DVC really needs to expand at DLR.

We don't own at GC and booked a spring break trip at 7 months for March 7, 2014 - we got a studio for 5 nights. No wait list, nothing. We ended up with a great view of World of Color too!
