Graduation Gift Ideas

I have two graduation parties coming up (in the next 2 weeks) and have no idea what/how much to give. When I graduated from college, gifts were small to friends since no one had started their full times yet, so it was off of what I was earning as an intern, so it was about $25 a person.

The first party is the sister of one of my best friends. I am friendly with her and she goes on most of our big Disney vacations. She is graduating from undergrad at college and will be continuing on for her masters. She lives at home, so the apartment stuff would be out. She will eventually go into the social services field.

The second party is for one of my best friends since high school. She is graduating from med school and will be starting her residency in the summer. She will be at home as well as she was a lucky one who got a local rotation. She will eventually be in the physical therapy/rehab field

I just want to add that I really don't like to give my friends gift cards or cash as I feel it says "I have no clue what to give you but I like you X amount" I would much rather give them something that would be useful to them in the future. I am far from either of those fields and have no clue what would be useful.

Anybody have any good ideas? I need HELP and FAST!!!

Honestly for somebody my same age range I think a bottle of champagne and a bouquet of flowers would suffice.

One of my favorite Graduation gifts is to give the graduate a copy of Dr. Suess's Oh the Places You'll Go , along with a card and some money. I don't know any new grad who would not appreciate a few extra dollars.

For your friend that goes to Disney how about something from the Disney store such as a nice watch.
For your other friend how about a summertime kit that includes flip flops, sunscreen, a beach towel, hat, sunglasses, beach bag etc.
Another idea for both of them would be to make a gift basket that could include
chocolate
bath supplies
bottle of wine
popcorn, dvd, popcorn spices

These are some great ideas. I think I will steal the movie one to do the doctor's birthday since that is in less than 2 months!

DS is graduating this spring. We have lots of friends with kids this age, so I'm going to have to do several gifts. I've been thinking about this too. Probably the ones we're not as close to I'll do a gift card or check. I might do personalized gifts for a few of them.

Other gifts I've seen:
lap study board (not the little ones for toddlers, but big wooden ones)
stuff with college logo if you know which school such as watch, hoodie, etc
beautiful pen/pencil set
laptop bag (if they are getting a computer) or a computer lock to lock to desk
wraparound towel with monogram or future school logo embroidery
basket themed toward laundry, bath supplies, snacks, sports, etc
if you know where they are going to live - gift cards for eating out

Keep the ideas coming. I'm still looking for more ideas.

I'm about to graduate from law school. I'd say the #1 thing I need is the cash with bar exam expenses looming.

If I weren't going to give cash:

For the doctor, I'd get her comfortable shoes. She'll probably be doing alot of standing/walking.

For the one going onto grad school, maybe some new school stuff like a nice bag for her books. Is she going to be interviewing for TA positions? If yes, a nice leather portfolio or a nice pen set for interviews.

For the person in med school how about a pair or crocs. I have heard doctors wear those now.

For a college graduate a gift certificate to a framer - to get their diploma professionally framed. I still haven't gotten mine framed....

A framed poem....

For a high school grad who is going on to college - a piggy bank with lots and lots of quarters and a laundry bag.

I also ditto the Oh the places you will go book - but it is tough since it is so popular - I got three of them and I graduated from college in 2000.
