Do you send them? If so, why?

What do you think about receiving them?

Discuss. :hippie:

Yes, I sent them...to announce DD's graduation.

How do I feel about receiving them? Haven't given it much thought. I've only gotten three though. All from family.

Sent them for ds last year to out of town family. Didn't expect them to come or send anything. Just had a card of multiple pictures of him and wanted to share our joy. He had a great high school experience and we just wanted to.

He sent 25 traditional invites to close family and those in town.

I had never heard of them til I saw it here.

I think it is a dumb idea. Why let people know something that should be a given. Yes, your kid graduated high school. And? :confused3

I see it as a huge gift grab. It's funny, I'm sure some of the people here who throw out the word tacky so quickly at everything have no problem sending these out.

I've never received one and I'm pretty sure I never will. I would never consider sending a gift or money to someone who graduated.

Graduation announcements are common where I live now and were also common where I used to live. Must be different in Canada. :confused3

Do you have graduation parties in your area or are those a dumb idea too?

We definitely don't have parties like have been described here. I think my parents took me out to dinner after I graduated. Thats the norm around here.

Sorry if I am ruffling feathers but seriously, why are kids being rewarded for doing something that is expected of them? I really don't get it.

My kids aren't old enough to have graduated yet, but I did them when I was graduating high school (and college) and we get one or two each year these days. I also don't think too much about them. Those people we're close to, we often send a check and a card to congratulate them.

First off, there are lots of different graduations: high school, college, advanced degree, etc. I wouldn't say all are "expected".

Second, I don't know about you but we celebrate lots of things that are expected. Birthdays and anniversaries to name a couple.

It just makes life more joyous. :cloud9:

I like getting grad announcements - I am so happy for people! But then again, I value education and think it's hard work :confused3

ETA: I especially love when the announcements have pics in cap & gown

I'm throwing my dd a graduation party in our yard. She worked her butt off in high school, was honor roll for all 4 years and I'm proud of her and want to celebrate.

As far as graduation announcements, they are not really done around here but they don't bother me. I just got one from my friend in NC for her son and I enjoyed seeing his handsome face.

I will send them only to people invited to the party. Other than that its a money grab.

Pretty much everybody around here sends them. The schools send out a Senior Packet where you order them. It isn't expected that you send a gift or money if you receive one - at least I've never heard that gifts are expected. My husband has received many of them over the years from kids he used to coach in baseball. We usually send congratulation cards back but not usually a gift other than for the kids of close friends who also happened to be on his teams.

For college my son only sent them to Grandma and a few Aunts. He didn't send them to more extended family. I put one in his baby book. No big deal.

Yes it's expected but it is a big milestone and something to be proud of. It's an accomplishment.

No, we did not send any type of announcement. People who know and love her knew she was graduating. I think of it as a gift grab.

I receive several a year. They do not bother me unless it is a kid I barely know, lol, then I do think someone is looking for some $$.

We did a family cookout to celebrate.

I am another one that had never heard of them before hearing it here.

Nope no graduation announcements here at all. If I received one and it was not in the form of an invitation to a celebration I'd think it was a money grab/strange.

We do have big graduation parties here though. It is an "expected" event but so is birth, baptist, communion, birthdays etc. It's the end of one part of a child's life and the beginning of another one- hence a celebration.

Yes, I sent them. It is something that is *done* here. I sent them out for my graduation in 1981 and it was very common then.

I only sent them to close family members and my son's godmother.

When I receive them (which I only EVER get them from family members), I interpret them as an announcement of an accomplishment and and, if I usually send a card with some money. I never feel forced to do it. I want to do it.

This is how I feel about it too. I sent them when I graduated and my kids sent them out to family members too. Family members also send them to us and I enjoy them. A pictures is always sent with them so it fun to see them! We got one yesterday for my cousins DS in Seattle and while we have no intention of attending, we liked getting it because it had a current picture of him. I will send a check just because I want to. I have gotten them before from people I barely knew and never felt like I had to send a check, I send one because I want to.

I sent them, but included in the INVITATION to the Graduation party!! A Senior picture was also included in the envelope.;)

This year I have a college graduate and I am not sending announcements. There may or may not be a get-together because she's doing an out of state internship and who knows what'll happen after that:lmao:

Not sure what the big deal is. I sent them out for my high school, college and grad school graduations. I was not expecting any gifts in return. It was a way to share my life events with family and close family friends. I thought this was common practice.

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

Never heard of them. Send invitations to people invited to graduation parties. Besides that? :confused3
