my son just handed me the Jostens catalog... yes its due in just over 12 hours. I feel like "what? already?" I am not ready yet! I might order the formal invites for immediate family then deal with the party invites and thank yous at a later date..... This is my first senior, so I am green, but is this how you did it?

and, yeah... I want to do it as cost efficient as possible, and these prices are high!!!

My DD is a junior this year, so I will be struggling with all that next year.

IF, and it is a big IF...dd wants to get the 'formal invites" fine. We'll get the absolute minimum quantity. Everyone else will get a "fun" invite - probably something that has a collage of sorts, along with the invite info.

Your son and my daughter must have been separated at birth...lol! ;)

FWIW we did the formal announcements (sent out to all friends and family) and then did a different informal invitation to the party. We sent out a wallet size senior pic with the announcements. For the thank you's we actually took one of her pictures from graduation (in cap and gown) and did a photo card with a thank you message from Costco. HTH!

We ordered 25 of the former invites from Josten's, for the rest we made photo invitations at Sams club for about 38 cents each envelopes included.

Ordered cap and gown from Josten's. 25 thank you cards came with the package from Josten's, we also bought a pack of 25 thank you cards from Meijer's dept store for about $3.

The plaque (copy) of the diploma is nice. I'm glad we ordered it from Jostens.

ETA: If i remember correctly the invitations from Sam's club was normal postage. And the formal invitations from Josten's cost about 63 cents each to send.

The trend for graduation annoucements is getting away from the "formal" Josten's type announcements due to technological advancements. There is so much that you or your child can now do yourselves with word processing software or desktop publishing software. Also, there are thousands of on-line stationary businesses that will make customized invitations for a fraction of what Josten's charges. Your local printer may also be an option.

Unless you can't fight the urge to use the traditional annoucement, I would highly recommend forgoing the Josten's route. You'll save money, you'll get exactly what you want and you will be able to get something that is unique and individual to your son.

We didn't do the formal announcements, etc. I personally think they are a waste of money. Your family probably already knows that your son is graduating this year, why spend the money ?

But I guess I am cheap, I don't buy (birthday, etc) cards either, think they are a waste of money.

If your child had senior pictures done by a photographer other than Jostens/the school photog, most photogs have beautiful options for invites/announcements that can be created from the images. While they won't be as cheap as Sam's/Costco, they are beautiful and I'd rather give the business to a local business than Jostens...and yes, a disclaimer, I am a photographer;).

I teach seniors at a school that uses Jostens. Here's what I tell my kids every year:

That Jostens form is misleading. They IMPLY that you have three choices -- three "packages", which range from about $180 - $250. They IMPLY that you have to choose from one of those three packages. You don't.

Look at all those packages include. It's a cap and gown, announcements and name cards, "11" stickers for announcement envelopes, thank you notes, a keychain, a tee-shirt and a hoodie sweatshirt, some sweatpants, a piece of costume jewelry, picture frames, a scrapbook . . . really, are you in the market for those extras? If you didn't want them before you read the catalog/form, do you really want them now? I doubt it.

You probably want a cap and gown and some announcements.

I can tell you from years of working with seniors, at least 50% of the seniors will order those huge packages. And when they come in, they'll all say, "Why'd my mama order all this stuff?" They don't really pay attention to what's in those packages. They just figure they're supposed to choose Option 1, 2, or 3. They don't realize that they had the option to JUST order the items they wanted.

Also, note that those clothing items aren't specific to your child's school -- they're generic "Senior 11" items that Jostens sells to everyone. I'd be willing to pay for a tee /sweatshirt from the school . . . that is, one with all the senior names printed on the shirt. But just the word "Senior"?

Keep reading down the form. You have the option to buy items INDIVIDUALLY, and when you look at it that way, the cost isn't bad at all. The individually priced options are in tiny black letters, whereas the packages are printed large and bold in colored boxes.

Of course you need to order the cap, gown, and tassel set. For our school, that's just under $10. Add in the shipping/handling fee, and you're still under $15. That's all you really NEED to order from Jostens.

You probably want some invitations as well. Jostens sells them at our school for .60 or .65-ish each. Name cards are something like $12 for a package of 100. MANY PEOPLE these days are getting their announcements elsewhere because the ones we sell at school are butt-ugly. A quick internet search'll show you loads of options, and if you do your own, you can include your own wording. Lots of people are including a graduation party or an Open House on the same invitation. You'll probably spend MORE for custom-made invitations on the internet, but I'd do it -- they're nicer! Try ebay; you'll find good options there.

When my daughter's a senior, I'm pretty sure we'll buy JUST the cap, gown, tassle set (and probably an extra souvenier tassle for her to hang in her car), but that's it. Oh, her daddy did mention the other day when she was looking through a Jostens catalog that he likes the beer-stein type mugs with all the seniors names on them. He said he wants one of those with each girls' graduation class for himself. But keychains, scrapbooks, and costume jewelry . . . no thanks, we may buy some of those things, but it won't be from this source.

One last thing . . . you're familiar with the concept of a loss leader at the grocery store. Josten's cap and gown set is the same thing. You're going to place an order so you can get the cap and gown, and they sell that dirt cheap, but they're hoping that you'll also buy their other products, which are expensive. You've gone to the grocery store JUST for the chicken that's an excellent price, haven't you? This is the same thing.

The minimum number is ONE. They're sold individually. Of course, they're cheaper if you buy them in multiples. Individually they're still less than a dollar. You probably can't beat that price (unless it's one of those fill-in-the-blank things that reads WHERE _______ WHEN ________, etc.).

Jostens put a flyer in that says that the average student in our area buys 64 announcements. That's misleading, however. Every year I hear my students complaining, "My mom made me buy X number of announcements, and we're only sending out 15."

We are getting ready for this in November. I do not think we will order any announcements. I think we will order from somewhere else, I looked at Shutterfly, they had some nice looking stuff. Or maybe he can even make something himself because he will be taking printmaking in the spring. I just can't see spending that much money.

My oldest DS graduated this past June. I didn't order announcements-I guess they aren't typical here because I've never heard of nor seen them. I did have a big party for him and I made up invites and printed them myself. I bought thank you notes and stickers from the 2010 grad section at Walmart (ds wrote them up). At Dollar Tree, I got a bunch of stuff like the 2010 paperware, party decor, door banner and yard sign.

I probably didn't spend over $30 for all this. I didn't order the cap/gown, the school did, I think the class fees paid for that. There were so many other fees and expenses associated with graduating, I was shocked :scared1:. It was an expensive month!

DD16 does not know this yet, but we won't be ordering any announcements (she's a senior). IMO, they are just a way of saying, "Hey, send me a gift".

I figure that anyone we are close enough to already knows she is graduating and does not need an announcement to notify them of this.

I was stupid with the first two then wised up. Jostens are mass produced. We have so much junk left over from the first two's packages. A lot of stuff you really don't need. Each of the four grad parties we had had over 300 people. The first two I sent Jostens invites to all. The 2nd 2, I did the postcard senior pic thing. Same people, no difference in attendance. Besides the school only allows 4 people per student at the actual graduation. So who can't go? Gramma & Grampa 1 or 2? I had a private party for relatives the day of graduation for relatives traveling who could not get into the ceremony.

I went for better senior pictures and a very nice party for everyone the next weekend instead of the junk that Jostens sells. So did most of the other parents. The best part was everyone coordinating dates so everyone had times and dates ahead of time so no parties overlapped.
They all were fun and the kids still remember them.
You live, you learn. Hope you have a great senior year with your kids!

yes, it is very misleading. I bet a lot of people get fooled by their "packages." Here's another tidbit. I don't know if you actually did the math, but the package is in no way money saving. I priced every item out in the package, and it is to the penny what it would cost to buy the same items individually.

I bought only minimums of what our style as a family would put together for an announcement. I am sure our order falls short of what many purchased, but it is just what we wanted. I also did not buy a cap/gown "package". We bought only the cap and gown "unit" then added the tassle of his choice.... period.

I was a little put off by the whole thing. They put the kids in panic mode that you have to order NOW..... really in 2010? Oh well, I worked it out.

I ordered the Jostens packages for my two oldest children(daughters), but when my son brought the order sheet home in September of his senior year, we had just spent over a $1000 on computer components for his custom-build senior project. There was no way I was spending another $200 on cheap-looking graduation announcements. I am not knocking Jostens in any way, but the paper they use is cheap...ask any scrapbooker. And the smallest number of announcements you can order is 25...we only needed 10. So I made my son's graduation announcements. At the time, I was already making my oldest daughter's wedding invitations, so the graduation announcements were easy. I was able to get a copyright release from the company that took my son's kindergarten picture, and included that as well as his senior picture. I had this whole "then and now" theme going. I used very heavy cardstock in his school colors and printed the information on vellum on the inside. The outside band was made of ribbon with an emblem I made using a corner punch. It looked much nicer than Jostens. My neighbor saw them and wanted me to make a few for her son, too. I spent a lot less than I would have through Jostens, and everyone loved them. I will try to add a picture later if anyone wants to see! It was very easy...my biggest investment was time.

OT: When you do send out invitations, if you send one to President Obama, they will send your graduate a congrats from the white house. I have one from Carter and my dd has one from Clinton.

Thank You! Thank You! That was great info. I wish I knew about this back when my son graduated in 2006. He liked President Bush's swagga. My daughter was very enthusiastic about President Obama's election.

To OP: Our family never buy the Josten invitations there are just to many very fancy and nice ones out there now. We save the money for a nicer grad gift. Good luck with Senior Year.:thumbsup2

I just shared this with my daughter, and she was horrified: "No way, Mom! What if he showed up?"
