everyone's advice seems to be "tell the wedding gown place your wedding is a MONTH EARLIER than it really is"

so i did

but my worry is that now maybe my fittings are too early. I mean, I'm desperately trying to lose weight by february

do you think i should give them the TRUE date and move the fittings up a month later?

or just stick with the month early plan because it is safer?

thanks everyone!!!

You can always tell them the wedding was rescheduled if you need other alterations and since you ordered your gown earlier you did not want to change the date.

I'd stick with the month early. I had that as my plan and then ended up in the hospital when I should have had fittings. So I ended up having my last fitting about a week before I needed my dress, and I was paniced. Having been through that go with the month early. If you suddenly lose more weight you can always call them again in a rush and see if they can get you in. But I wouldn't think you'd lose that much more in that last month compaired to what you'll lose leading up to that.

Why did people tell you to do that? The company should give the store a ship date and your gown should arrive 2 weeks or so later. at the store where I worked we did fittings any time they wanted but no later than a month unless it was under unusual circumstances. I bought my gown at Neiman Marcus and they will not do a fitting until 1 month prior- makes me nervous because I am 2 hours away. I would wait on your fitting until you lose the weight, you will probably have to pay for additional alterations and everytime they take it out of the bag they run a risk of something happening to it -Just tell them you moved the date back that Disney had to switch your time or something like that. Hope that helps!

allisonswonderland -The idea is to lower the stress for the bride. Everyone's hear horror stories of the dress not arriving until the week of the wedding. This way it's guarenteed to arrive within plenty of time, and to have it altered too. Without the bride having a major panic attack.

Honestly though if you have the correct amount of time to place the order, there should not be a problem w/ a late gown- do you get what I am saying? Typically a company needs 3-5 monthes (different companies require differnt time frames) to get the dress in the shop- your wedding date is given to ensure that they have enough time to make the gown and get it to you, - so if you have plenty of time when you place the order there should not be any last min fiascos.

I just fear that for brides who have not ordered their gowns yet and attempt to "up their date" and may not have the amount of time necessary may not be able to get the gown b/c their wedding date would be considered too soon, does that make sense? As long as the dress shop places the order immediately, then the time should not be an issue- I would ask them to place it while you are there and get the ship date. If it is on a weekend and the company is not open, call the shop Monday to get the ship date ( so you know it has been ordered). Also - we had gowns that were placed and based on the "given" wedding dates if the company saw they could not complete the gown on time (even after it was ordered) they would call and cancel it. This could be based on amount of fabric the company purchased or any number of things, so if your date is false there still may be issues.

Now there were times when I knew as an employee which companies were dependable and I would lie about the date, but that was usually for Prom dresses and not wedding-
I ordered my wedding gown in early March and the ship is late July, I was told approximately 5 monthes to get my gown. Just hoping to make it clear to brides who are cutting it close that telling the shop your date is earlier than it is will actually do more harm than good - So won't wait to order your gown, do it 6 monthes in advance at least! Happy Shopping!!

do you know anything about EDEN BRIDAL's track record ?

i had a new york store order my gown from them -- the store didn't carry that gown so i couldn't even try it on! i won't try it on until it arrives at the store in sept. (feb wedding)

i am so paranoid that in sept Eden is going to be like 'what gown? what are you talking about? nobody ordered you a gown!'

PS. thanks for the advice!

:)

Hey- Eden Bridals... I am thinking, there are so many companies that are together but you would never know. I know at one point we carried them, but I am just trying to remember who else they were with. I think we carried their informal line - but they are a company that requires 3 monthes max to make the gown- how long until your wedding? I see Feb - you should not have a problem

Ok so if the NY store did not carry your gown but they carry the brand, right? Just clarifying b/c some stores do not carry the brand but kind of "break the bridal law" and find a friend in another shop someplace else who can get that brand and doing that will take longer, since the company ships to the store with the account and then they have to ship to the next store, not a good idea.

Every once in a while there may be a glitch with any company. In my opinion I would contact your bridal shop and get a ship date from the company that way YOU know it has been ordered (if possible go in so you can see they have all that info on your order form) - after the ship date wait 2 weeks, it should be in and if it is not you should get with the shop and MAKE them call and check on it.

We always looked at ship dates and if they were late o if they were going to be close meaning the person did not have much time b/w ship date and wedding (because they waited too long to order) and would call the company every day so we knew the status. The only issues we ever had on missing a dress honestly were due to the customer waiting too long to order the gown or during Prom time. I do not ever remember missing a gown in the 7 years I worked there. But if there was going to be a problem the company usually called to notify us, like the girl with the fabric, the company could not get the lace in time so they could not do her dress. They know that fairly quickly, and notify quickly. I would toch base with your bridal shop but I think you should be fine. I will go see some of my friends who still work there and ask what they thinki about EDEN. Have a great one

I was very upfront with the bridal shop I used about when I would need my dress (a week before I was leaving for the wedding). I had no problems. In fact, my dress came in much earlier than expected and I had to wait several months to begin the alterations.

I told them the exact day of my wedding, not even the day i was leaving. I took a major chance since it was with David's Bridal. However, the dress came in about two weeks after that, so I had the dress in November, and it was in the closet until my first fitting in April. I just went on May 19(one month prior) for my final fitting, and now i have it at home waiting to go to Disney. SO i was up front, and it worked out well for me. Thank goodness!

It also depends on whether your the type of person who is likely to fluctuate in weight - either up or down. A friend of mine also told her bridal shop a month earlier then nearer the time she found that she had lost a little weight with the stress and the dress didnt fit right. Luckily the bridal shop had time to do the alterations for her!

I've never heard about lying to your bridal shop about the date? Interesting notion. I was honest with my shop and there wasn't any problem. I shopped in March for our October wedding. They said it would be about 4 months for the dress to be made and shipped and it arrived in June. I had my initial try-on about a week after it arrived (mom passed in that week so there was obviously a lot of other things to do). It needed only one minor alteration so I had a fitting for that about a month later, then my last try-on a month before the wedding and it fit perfectly.

If you're worried, call the shop and make sure they placed the dress order. They are used to brides who check up on everything all the time so it's not a big deal for you to keep on top of them.

I've also never heard about lying to your bridal shop. I had to tell the shop exactly when my wedding was b/c I ordered at the last possible minute to get my gown in 14-16 weeks and still have alterations. My gown arrived mid-august for my sept. 23 wedding. I didn't think I'd have to have a lot of alterations, but as it turns out I lost so much weight on the stress diet that I really could have ordered a smaller size gown! I only had 2 fittings - one to pin and the final fitting. I had to have the bodice and waist taken in as well as a hem and bustle. My final fitting was the week before the wedding and I picked up my gown on the way to the rehearsal...

I upped our date for alteration purposes and I am glad I did. There were things that were not right during that final fitting that they had to fix. And that pushed me back sending my dress to florida. I padded by 2 extra weeks than what I needed to have the dress shipped to get there when it needed to be.

I can't remember what we told them the date was, but we did tell them earlier for the alterations. I had the dress in hand a year ahead of time.
