Governor Bush discouraging visitors

Just got a new email from my brother's girlfriend (they live in Vero Beach) and it's finally sinking in that this is a SERIOUS storm - thank goodness! (He's a "northerner" and never been through a hurricane before..) They're re-thinking their plans about "riding it out" but not sure where to go.. We do have family up in Panama City/Lynn Haven area.. Would they be safe there? And could they get there with all of the traffic?

DMRick - yup - you and I talked after I posted to this thread and now that it looks more and more certain that Orlando is going to get hit - and get hit hard - I guess the room issue is moot.. LOL Now I'm thinking maybe not that many people would actually want a room in Orlando - unless they have no place else to go.. One thing is for sure - if the parks are open, the lines will probably be VERY short - and it will certainly make for one of those vacations "you never forget..." ;) Stay safe - and try to DIS from down there in WDW so we know you're okay..

And to everyone else down there in Florida - hang on tight.. It looks like you're in for one heck of a ride! :(

Word to the wise--before commenting on my evac plan--if you do not live in Florida in what will become a mandatory evacuation zone--and are not familiar with our states evac plan---and if you are familiar or from the area--unless you plan is better than my--you do my family no service to comment in any way on my plan to keep my family safe.

I would in no way tell you what to do in a blizzard or an avalanche or an earthquake--b/c I haven't a clue on what you must do or what it is like.

Off of soapbox and back to hurricane prep

Panama City is in the panhandle beyond Tallahassee--they are a coastal city with a barrier island. So pending where the relatives live and all...it would certainly be better than a direct hit in Vero--as long as the family lives on in"land" or main"land" instead of the island--then they should be okay. I am sure they are keeping up with contigincies in that area as well just in case. They would be wise to not ride it out and evacuate, the sooner the better as it could be a long haul up there.

Blessings!

I've never been there myself, but I remember my Mom saying they were "up in the mountains" outside of Lynn Haven - or something to that affect.. Are there "mountains" up there?

Right now my brother is down tying off his boat and trying to get stuff off of it while his GF is grabbing stuff from the yard and bringing it inside..

Don't know if you were speaking directly to me about your evacuation plan, but I think you're misinterpreting the comments that are being made.. Obviously if you live ON the coast, then anything that is "away" from there is better than staying put.. However, if some folks have other alternatives and don't live on the coast, then they're going to try to go somewhere that has less of a chance of getting hit than Orlando does right now..

A stressful time for sure and you can bet I'll be praying for EVERYONE down there..::yes::

I will say a prayer for all of you living in Florida. We just returned from a wonderful visit to Vero Beach and all of the local people we met were so friendly. I hope everyone makes it thru the storm better than okay.

No C.Ann--I wasn't speaking of you--I directed my comments specifically to the individual who said "I would hardly call Disney inland" as it seemed to be a snide remark and in an emergency situation--we just don't need to be that way. My apologies if you thought I was flaming you.

No problems - just didn't want you to misunderstand anything that I had said..

So - are there "mountains" in Lynn Haven? LOL Still waiting to hear more from my brother or his GF.. Man - this is nerve-racking! I don't know how YOU are keeping it together!

If you are planning to visit Walt Disney World this weekend, I urge you to keep a close eye on the Hurricane Frances situation and seriously consider postponing your trip. Among other things, Orlando hotel rooms may be needed by those at the coast who will be evacuating inland.

Disney will waive change fees for those who were scheduled to arrive September 1-6 and wish to reschedule vacations. Disney is no longer selling hotel rooms for September 3-6. If you need to reschedule, call the Disney Reservations Center now at (407) W-DISNEY.
Almost all major airlines are allowing passengers who had planned to arrive in Orlando between now and approximately September 5 to rebook their flights without a change fee. You must rebook before your original travel date, and generally you can travel up to 7 days later than originally planned. Contact your airline for exact details.
Most non-Disney hotels are beginning to announce waivers of change fees for anyone who has decided not to arrive this weekend due to the hurricane, so if you are planning to postpone, it's a good idea to call your hotel and check on that.
There is a lot of speculation that the Disney theme parks may be closed on Friday and/or Saturday, but that has not been officially announced. It is known that schools in the Orlando area will be closed on Friday. The Kennedy Space Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday to allow its employees time to prepare their homes for the hurricane.
Disney Cruises are likely to be affected by Hurricane Frances.

i copied this from MOUSESAVERS, please be safe and heed all warnings!!!!

What planet have I been living on? This is the first that Ive heard of the storm. I'll be praying for all of you down there! How sad that you all will be hit by another disasterous storm again. Everyone stay safe.
Lisa Loves Pooh, don't let others upset you. You are doing what's best for your family and you know that. The only people I question are the crazy ones who run to the beach to watch the storm come in. Why do they do that?!

Nik's Mom--thanks....

Usually--for most hurricanes--they go and watch--when the hurricane is far away...my friend's husband surfs--and usually he is excited to catch the resulting waves--this storm--he was the one who suggested they needed plywood.

I don't think any will be watching on shore this time.

I'm surprised by this statement. When I called earlier to get a room for Thursday, they indicated there were plenty of rooms. I'm also getting hit with a lot of room specials emails for this weekend in Orlando. My thought is, Orlando isn't where people are headed...but I could be wrong.

I have until tomorrow morning to change our plans...but for now, we are packed and ready to leave.

300,000 urged to evacuate in Palm Beach County

Other evacuations:
Martin County | St. Lucie County | Okeechobee County

By Deana Poole
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 1

Up and down the eastern coast of Florida, county emergency officials braced for the worst from Hurricane Frances, ordering the mandatory evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents on barrier islands, near the coastline and in mobile homes.

A state of emergency was declared in Palm Beach County Wednesday afternoon, with county officials ordering the mandatory evacuation of about 300,000 residents living in mobile homes, east of U.S. 1, and along the edge of Lake Okeechobee.

The evacuation order is effective 2 p.m. Thursday. At the same time, hurricane shelters will be opened across the county.

"We urge all residents to take this very seriously," said County Commission Chairwoman Karen Marcus during a news conference that the county's now-activated emergency operations center. "There is no more time for delay. Secure your home."

While the National Hurricane Center remained uncertain about where Hurricane Frances will make landfall, county officials were preparing for winds anywhere from 75 mph to 140 mph and a storm surge of up to 10 feet.

They said Palm Beach County hasn't been hit by a hurricane of this magnitude since 1947. "It is nothing to take lightly," said Vince Bonvento, assistant county administrator.

Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast is only a small part of Hurricane Frances' "cone of probability," but it is in the middle of that cone.

"It could be anywhere along the east coast of Florida, but especially in an area from the southeast Florida coast to perhaps around the Cape Canaveral area," National Hurricane Center specialist Stacy R. Stewart said.

And, the storm could be at Category 5, the highest level of the Saffir-Simpson scale, when it makes landfall.

Frances is approaching Florida at a northwest angle, and because the coast is also at an angle, the storm is close to paralleling the coast. That was the problem with Charley, which appeared aimed right at Tampa, then made a tiny shift to the right that brought it ashore at Punta Gorda.

Stewart said a 30 mile deviation on either side of center means the difference between Frances striking Broward County or Cape Canaveral.

Stewart said up to 10 inches of rain could fall in 24 to 36 hours.

By 9 a.m. Friday, the county is expected to experience winds topping 39 mph. Hurricane force winds exceeding 75 mph are expected to reach Palm Beach County by midnight Friday.

Palm Beach County gradually will shut down late Thursday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Frances:

• Public schools will close three hours early Thursday, starting with elementary schools at 11 a.m. By 1 p.m. all public schools will be shut down. Schools will remain closed on Friday.

• All county and state offices will close at noon Thursday, as well as the Port of Palm Beach.

• Bridges to barrier islands will be closed to automobile traffic at 9 a.m. Friday until further notice.

• Trash and garbage collection will be suspended on Friday. Collection hours will be extended today and Thursday in hopes of clearing streets and yards of debris. No collection is expected over the weekend.

• Palm Tran service will be suspended Friday and Saturday.

• Palm Beach International Airport will close once sustained winds reach 50 mph — possibly by late Friday morning. Travelers should check with airlines on flight cancellations and other delays before going to PBIA.

Martin County evacuations

In Martin County, residents of barriers islands, manufactured homes and mobile homes will be ordered to evacuate effective noon Thursday, according to Martin County officials.

Sewall's Point residents area also included in the order.

Shelters will open at noon for evacuees at at Jensen Beach Elementary School, Warfield Elementary, Seawind Elementary and Crystal Lake Elementary in Martin County. A special needs shelter will open at Challenger School for those who have preregistered and they will be notified. Those who go to shelters should bring comfortable clothing, at least a gallon of water per person, all necessary medications and bedding. No pets, alcohol, or firearms are allowed.

Officials recommend those who plan to leave the area avoid going to the west coast which is still recovering from Hurricane Charlies and suggested a better plan would be to head north out of state.

It's expected St. Lucie County will order a similar evacuation, but officials were still meeting Wednesday afternoon.

St. Lucie County evacuations

St. Lucie County is also recommending evacuation of mobile homes, manufactured homes and the barrier islands begining at noon Thursday. A list of shelters will be issued later.

Officials were discouraging motorists from attempting to flee, saying no part of the state was safe at this point. They also feared gridlock on the turpike and interstate highways. They suggested staying elsewher within the county if they feel their homes are not safe. They said shelters, with limited space, should be considered a last resort.

Okeechobee County evacuations

Okeechobee County will have a mandatory evacuation of mobile homes and unsafe, wooden structures beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday. Shelters will be open at 4 p.m.

This has got to be some of the scariest weather stuff I have ever read!

According to this, it would NOT be a good idea for my brother and his GF to go "west".. :(

I think if I had a choice between staying on the beach or going west..I'd pick west.

its very scary thinking we could be hit so hard. I have lived in south fla all my life and never seen a hurricane like this come so close. I will be working as the before and during hurricane staff in the er that I work in downtown wpb- which is so close to the intracoastal. we will just have to watch and pray.

In my opinion they should have gotten on an airplane and come home !!!

Typical of my brother.. Has his "rose-colored glasses" firmly planted on his face until a two by four whacks him up alongside of his head!! Grrrrrrrrr....

Going to WDW on Sunday. Hopefully it will have already passed.

I think the Gov is wise to ask people to RESCHEDULE not cancle.

I think the Gov is wise to ask people to RESCHEDULE not cancle.

Some can't reschedule. Will you be able to get there on Sunday??

Our plans may still change...I have until tomorrow morning. The friends we are going to visit are planning on moving to a motel with a generator, since they just got their power back, and don't want to be without power again.

While on hold to cancel our weekend holiday trip to PopCentury, there was a recording that said there are no more rooms and that they will let you cancel and reschedule or refund your deposit. I was unable to go at any other time, so got my refund.

I was told that they will need the rooms for the Vero Beach resort when they are evacuated. I was glad to give up my room and hope it goes to someone who really needs a place to stay now, though it looks as if it will not be a fun weekend for them, at least it will be shelter.

No more rooms, or not booking anymore rooms? I didn't pay close attention (I'm on hold now, but they've moved on).

We are back to going on Friday, giving ourselves a little more time to see what's what and if they have a better path.
Southwest told me it will be a must bumpier ride on Friday..YIKES!

The CM did just tell me, that there are rooms from cancellations..and their system cleans itself out at midnight, so they will then show up. But unfortunately, they are not inviting more guests to fill the rooms.

Both Disney and Southwest have just been darling with all my changes.

Posted by C. Ann "So - are there "mountains" in Lynn Haven?"

Not to my knowledge--maybe small hills!

If the storm does not take the westerly track and skim the Keys, then the Panhandle does not look like it will get hit by much of the storm. If it takes the westerly track, then Frances will be headed straight for us.

I have read that no part of the state is considered safe at this point in time. Hope everyone stays safe. . ..
