Do you think it is going to happen or will the budget be approved in time?

*Is this possible without being too political?

I might end up with an unplanned vacation....again.

Every year when the budget is due, they make vague threats of a shutdown. It hasn't happened yet.

1995?

I don't remember this being an issue every year. I think I'd remember since my wallet is involved. lol But maybe not. I suffer from CRS frequently. ;)

Frankly I'm a little confused on how things are running at all at this point. There is no money yet thinks keep going on like nothing is wrong. It's like the whole country has agreed to ingest a steady diet if magic mushrooms for a while.

I don't think things will close down but if no-one forces a reality check soon things are going to just grind to a staggering halt to services and lots of people are going to be hurt because they have not been preparing properly. There is no magic bullet coming and the sooner people realize this the better prepared they will be, start saving, stop spending on frivolity and make sure both feet are planted firmly on the ground.

The writing is on the wall, read it.

Even if you get a shutdown vacation, Federal employees are always paid retroactively for that time. So enjoy your paid vacation if the shutdown happens.

Contractor, no back pay. :(

Last year we were off for a week due to snowmageddon. We had to use vacation time for it. Government shut-down, same thing unfortunately. We must use all vacation time then go on LWOP.

and there we have the first signs of mud slinging. You think anyone even notices the people in the middle don't like crud flying over our heads all the time because it always drips

I certainly hope that there is not a government shut down. It will affect far more than just the government workers and the economy does not need any more uncertainty. I'm an optimist at heart, so I anticipate a last minute deal that will keep the government running.

I remember the shut downs in 1995 and 1996. In November 1995, I had just accepted a job offer in DC (private sector employer). I moved from San Diego and came to DC a week before work began so I could get situated and enjoy the city a bit. That entire week the government was closed. No Smithsonian museums. No National Zoo. No White House tours. Closed. On top of it, the weather was gray and rainy. It was a terribly gloomy week.

unforunately at this point all we will get is another contining resolution-i would be surprised if we pass the FYI 11 Bugdet before the beginning of FYI 12-they will just keep extending the CRA. Or -possibly they will let it expire-since both sides have a point to prove-its going to be quiet painful for everyone ( i am a gov contractor married to a soldier).

It's all they've been talking about today.

We've been told to get any outstanding budget issues (open positions, procurements, etc.) in before next Friday as a precaution.

The ones I feel bad for are the contractors that won't make up the time and the local merchants. We are almost 1/3 of a private building and there is a little market that will suffer greatly while we're closed.

During the last shutdown, I was a contractor. The way our contract was written, we were still able to come to work and get paid. There was lots of work we could continue to do, albeit not at 100%, so it wasn't a huge deal for me. I do understand that some contracts are written that if the government is closed, a contractor cannot bill time.

The civil servants I supported at that time were off for 3-4 days and were retroactively paid once the budget passed (because the budget is retroactive). It is not a given that the federal employees will be paid. That also has to be separately approved after the budget is passed.

I remember going through this in 95, but for some reason this one seems worse to me. DH said that they may be looking at being closed for two to four weeks. Of course he does not know for sure what is going to happen, this is just a guess.

I am not so sure about this. Dh has not said anything about this.

My thoughts exactly, and I am hoping that they come through and find a way to work together and get it passed. I am just worried because when the government shuts down, that is more citizens going without pay for days maybe even weeks. Some of these people live paycheck to paycheck so this may put a big strain on them.

We have planned well, but this would still effect us. I was just told that I can't payoff our Disney trip until we know whats going to happen. If they shut down, the trip is off, and this is my DD's senior trip. It's not due until mid April so I hope and pray that everything is resolved by then.:worship:

Some days I'm a little dense, but I thought you were talking about a "vacation" from the DISboards because of posting a no-no political thread :rotfl: Some days I need a vacation!

There has never been a government shutdown where the "federal" workers were not paid when the bill was finally passed -- however, that said, there is a totally different mindset in Congress these days. I fully expect that the government will shutdown next week because Congress isn't doing a very good job of compromising these days.

I do feel for the government contractors, who will not get back pay and I feel for all the businesses that surround the federal buildings -- those Mom and Pop stores that live day to day on the money that the federal employees pay for breakfast and/or lunch, etc. That money will be a total loss to them.

Since this is political, we're going to end it now while we're all still friends. :)
