Last night DH and I were watching tv and went to the kitchen where I could smell a weird burning type smell. DH followed the smell upstairs . Next thing I heard a commotion and looked up the stairs to see Dh carrying DS out of his room still asleep.

I ran up the stairs to see that his bedside light melting one of his cushions on his bed. The cushion was one of these bright squishy sausage type cushions that are sold in shopping centres etc. The light was a reading lamp which you clip on to the side of the cabin bed and has a bendy arm. DS must have switched back on his light and the cushion had been moved close to it but wasn't touching it.

It had started smouldering and the smell was horrible. I got such a scare but luckily DS slept through the whole.

Just had the local fire safety officer round and he has taken everything away to look into it.

I just feel so stupid. I just didn't think a light could do so much damage. Needless to say DD light has been disposed of.

Suprised even the early smoulderings didnt trigger a smoke alarm. As we had a dormer built we had to have electrical ones and they are so sensitive.

Must have been a shock to the system, we never stop learning about how dangerous stuff can be..

Lucky you realised so quickly.

yes, lucky you found it quick, and double lucky the cushion didn't create any toxic fumes. to you

big hugs to you, glad you are all safe and sound xx

Thanks you for this post. I will take my DD light of her bed as soon as I get home.

I am so glad that you all ok.

Thanks for all your hugs:grouphug: I am still feeling like someone has kicked me in the stomach. I just never imagined that happening. I am going over the WHAT IF............ at the moment

The officer said he would let me know what was to happen but he was going to Homebase to report the incident and they should recall the lights, I am not sure about the cushion - it was JML.

Will let you all know when we get some news

Big hugs.. what a horrible thing to happen.. I'm surprised that the cushions don't come with more warnings if they are that flamable...

Try not to think about it...

Thank god everything was ok and you were alert.

OMG I'm so pleased everyones OK, my DD has a snooze pillow and a homebase bendy reading light so I will have to show her this post!

I'm really glad that you are all safe:hug:

OMG Jackie. Thank God you're all OK. If that was me I probably woudn't have slept well after that as I'm a natural born worrier where the kids are concerned. (my 2 were the only ones at the beach with water wings! :lmao: )

Thanks for the post though as I'm sure when they're older they'll be wanting lights. I'll show this to hubby - he's a health and safety Manager. I'll have him doing a risk assessment in the girls bedroom! :rotfl:

Big hugs to you all and hope you're over the shock.
