got a question about Strep throat

How contageous is it? If someone has it, how long (after starting antibiotic)are they still contageous?
My dog trainer just called me and she has it,I don't want it! I just spoke to a friend (also trains with us)who wasn't feeling good this morning,she went to the doctor and she has it!!

I've been told I'm still contagious for 24 hours after starting an antibiotic. However, I am not a doctor, so I could be completely wrong.

I've heard that once you have been on an antibiotic for 24 hours, you are no longer contagious. Additionally, in case you want to monitor it, the incubation period for strep is 3-5 days. So, start counting from your last contact. Once you hit 5 days and you don't come down with it, you should be fine.

try not to worry about it too much. my sister has had it 9 times. i used to be exposed to her when she had it all the time, and i've never had it.

While it is very "contagious" some folks are more susceptible to it. DH and DD never get and I usually get it at least 4-5 times a year... I on the other hand can be within a mile of someone who has it and I'm finished. 24 hrs is usually the standard period to be on antibiotics. Also if you have had your tonsils removed you would be less likely to get it.

my ped. has always said my kids could go back to school 24 hrs. after taking teir antibiotic.

I'm safe,unfortunately my friend has it now and could've infected her daughter and grandbaby...

DS gets it at least twice a year but DD never gets it. My pediatrician told me that kids up to about 2 years old don't get it (seems like they have an immunity to it???). I don't think your friend will have to worry about the baby.

A decent rule of thumb is 24 hours after antibiotics have started AND fever has gone away.

after 24 hours of meds. it should not be contagious... but you never know. I had strep so much, the meds. didn't even effect the strep anymore, so I had strep for like 2 months until they took out my tonsills!!!
