Google!

Google.com was registered on 9/15/97 and incorporated on 9/4/98, so I'm not sure that's it. I heard it was meant to show off HTML 5.0 and CSS 4.0.

I'm using IE8 and it worked fine for me. I noticed it today when I went and used my brother's computer (also using IE) while visiting my mom today. It's cute.

It only works with IE8 ... and other modern browsers (Chrome, FF, Safari, etc). I guess there is one company out there who doesn't support (at least not fully) old versions of IE... I hope that trend continues (can you tell I'm a code monkey?)

Yep - I had IE7. I also read an article earlier today that this could have been a little exercise on Google's part to have people see how "old" their browser technology is and/or to have people see how nice the "newer" technology is. Who knows why they really did it, but their logo was certainly fun today.
